GUNMEN SHOT DEAD 30 TRAVELLERS IN IMO

According to Reuters, gunmen shot dead at least 30 travellers in an attack in Nigeria’s southeastern Imo State, Amnesty International reported, raising fresh concerns about insecurity in the region.

The attackers, suspected to be members of the banned separatist Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), also set ablaze more than 20 vehicles and trucks along the Okigwe-Umuahia Expressway.

Reacting to the tragic incident, Peter Obi condemned the killings on his official X page, stating: “Again, we have been confronted with another senseless killing in the country, this time in Imo state, where about 30 people were murdered by gunmen. This marks yet another level of embarrassing barbarism in a society already battling an unprecedented level of insecurity.”

He described the violence as a “poignant reminder of our collective failure as a nation” and called for urgent government action to protect lives and property.

Obi urged authorities to investigate, arrest, and bring the perpetrators to justice, emphasizing that Nigerians cannot continue to live in fear.

He extended his condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for eternal rest for the deceased.

The attack occurred amid a series of violent incidents in the area, including the burning of vehicles and ambushes on travellers by suspected IPOB and Eastern Security Network (ESN) militants.

Police have launched manhunts to apprehend the gunmen and secure the region, with joint operations involving the Police, Army, and DSS underway.

This latest massacre underscores the deepening insecurity challenges in southeastern Nigeria, where violent attacks on civilians and security personnel have become increasingly frequent, severely impacting economic activities and social stability.
