KEYAMO BLAMES CONTRACTOR AS ENUGU AIRPORT RUNWAY SHUTS AGAIN
Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo has faulted previous repairs on the Enugu airport runway, days after the Federal Government announced its temporary closure for emergency maintenance.
The Akanu Ibiam International Airport will be shut from April 22 to May 6 following safety concerns raised by Air Peace and the discovery of major cracks on the runway.
Keyamo said the airport was earlier closed in 2019 for total rehabilitation, but the contractor failed to address drainage issues, causing recurring damage.
He said efforts to patch the runway have failed and that the surface has now deteriorated into “craters,” putting lives at risk.
“All flights will be diverted to nearby airports during the two-week repair,” he said, promising swift work to minimise disruption.
