36 COWS DIE AFTER EATING GARDEN EGG, PLATEAU GOVT LAUNCHES PROBE

The Plateau State Government has commenced an investigation into the suspected poisoning of 36 cows at Tafi Gana Junction in the Zanwar community of Bassa Local Government Area.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at approximately 4:30 p.m. while the cattle were grazing. According to Ya’u Idris, Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN) in Bassa, the cows ingested what appeared to be toxic garden eggs scattered in the area.

According to Vanguard, Idris called on the Fulani community to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands, assuring that security agencies are actively addressing the situation.

The Plateau State Police Command confirmed that 33 cows were affected. Police spokesperson, Alfred Alabo, stated that senior police officials, including Deputy Inspector General of Police (Operations) Bzigu Kwazhi, visited Maraban Dare community to sympathize with the cattle owner.

DIG Kwazhi urged the community not to take retaliatory action and assured them that those responsible would be brought to justice.

Joyce Ramnap, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Communication, confirmed the reports and urged the public to avoid speculation that could escalate tensions.

She emphasized that the Ministry of Livestock Development, along with veterinary and environmental experts, had been dispatched to investigate the incident.

Bassa Local Government Chairman, Joshua Riti, condemned the poisoning, stressing the need for peaceful coexistence.

The Plateau State Government has reiterated its commitment to transparency and ensuring justice, while appealing to all stakeholders to remain patient as investigations unfold.
