KNIGHTS OF ST. JOHN INTERNATIONAL CONSTRUCTING CONFERENCE AND RETREAT CENTRE IN ENUGU
The Knights of St. John International (KSJI) Supreme Subordinate Commandery has officially commenced the construction of its Conference and Retreat Centre at Onuogba Nike, Enugu East Local Government Area, Enugu State.
The project is expected to serve as a hub for leadership training, spiritual renewal, and community development.
The foundation stone was laid by the Supreme Subordinate President, Major General Remy Uche, assisted by Noble Sister Chinwe Mgbajiaka, SSAP (Nigeria).
The event attracted notable dignitaries, including members of the Supreme Subordinate Board, Grand Commandery Worthy Presidents, and Respected look Presidents, underscoring the significance of the project within the KSJI fraternity.
Speaking at the event, Colonel Nnia Nwodo, former Minister of Information and Chairman of the Building Committee, described the project as a major milestone in the history of KSJI in Nigeria.
“This centre will not only serve the Knights but will also provide a platform for retreats, conferences, and leadership training that will impact society positively,” he stated.
He assured that the Building Committee would ensure the timely and high-quality execution of the project.
The Supreme Subordinate President, Major General Remy Uche, commended the leadership of the Enugu Grand Commandery and the Building Committee for their commitment to the vision. He urged the committee to prioritize the early completion of the chapel, allowing it to serve its spiritual purpose while construction on other sections of the complex progresses.
“A project of this magnitude requires careful planning and commitment. The completion of the chapel first will provide a place of worship even as work continues,” he advised.
The project architect and member of the Building Committee, Sister Augusta Emenike, conducted dignitaries around the site, offering insights into the architectural layout and expected phases of construction.
He explained that the centre would feature conference halls, residential quarters, Grotto, a chapel, Praying ground and a skill acquisition centre, emphasizing that the chapel would serve as the spiritual heart of the complex once completed. She was assisted in his role by Captain Greg Nnaji, Secretary of the building committee, who also contributed to the site preparations.
The foundation-laying ceremony was marked by spiritual and traditional rites. The Parish Priest of St. Mary’s Parish, Akpoga Nike, Rev. Fr. John Chime, led prayers for divine guidance and success, seeking God’s blessings on the project.
Additionally, the Traditional Ruler of Mbulujodo Nike Autonomous Community, HRH Igwe Gabriel Okoh, performed a traditional blessing, highlighting the cultural and communal significance of the centre.
The Building Committee, under the leadership of Colonel Nnia Nwodo, includes Brigadier General Innocent Diyoke (Vice Chairman), Captain Greg Nnaji (Secretary), Sister Edith Mary Nkunite Egbuje, Colonel Alex Ifeagwazi, and Sister Emenike Augusta Ifeoma.
They expressed their collective dedication to ensuring that the project meets the highest standards and serves as a beacon of excellence.
In his remarks, Colonel Nnia Nwodo emphasized the importance of teamwork and diligence in delivering the project on schedule. “This is a project that requires collective responsibility. We must work with speed and precision while upholding the values that KSJI stands for,” he said. He called on all stakeholders, including well-wishers, to support the initiative.
The ceremony also provided an opportunity for interaction among KSJI members, fostering unity and shared commitment to the success of the project. Members of the Supreme Subordinate Board, Brigadier General Obiora Amadi of Enugu Grand Commandry, as well as other distinguished guests, commended the initiative and pledged their support in ensuring its realization.
With the foundation stone now laid, work is expected to commence in earnest. The Knights of St. John International remain committed to creating a world-class retreat and conference centre, strengthening their role in promoting faith, leadership, and community service in Nigeria.
