Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers state has reacted after being denied access to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill at the Assembly Quarters.

Fubara was locked out from the Port Harcourt Aba road temporal Rivers State House of Assembly Complex, on Wednesday.

The governor arrived with his entourage but met the Assembly entrance gate under lock and key.

The lawmakers had given Fubara 48-hour ultimatum to the present the budget which was earlier approved by the 4-member faction of the assembly loyal to him.

But the Supreme Court had recognsied the 27-member loyal to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as the authentic members of the Rivers House of Assembly.

The governor had invited the lawmakers over to Government House, Port Harcourt, but they shunned the invitation.

Speaking during the inauguration of the Bori Zonal Hospital in Khana LGA, the governor lamented that, in line with the Supreme Court judgment, all stakeholders should prioritize safeguarding the state’s economy and ensuring that civil servants do not suffer unnecessary hardship.

The governor insisted that he followed due process to resolve the situation and expressed hope that the lawmakers would eventually comply with the Supreme Court ruling.

He said: “I made frantic efforts to reach the Speaker, which I believe he cannot deny, alongside other members of the Assembly.

“I even sent WhatsApp messages to them, notifying them that I would be coming at 10 am to present the budget. This was to ensure that Rivers State does not face any crisis because of me, as some have alleged.

“But unfortunately, when we got there this morning, we were denied access. And the next thing I heard was that no communication was made. I leave everything to God, who sees all things in secret.

“I am aware of reports in the media claiming there was no communication or effort on my part. So, I am using this platform to clarify the situation.

“Like I have always said, nothing lasts forever. Even the greatest power eventually comes to an end. What matters is how we use power. I have chosen not to abuse mine, no matter what they claim.

“When power is abused, it leads to situations like this. But I will remain restrained because I know that there is life after power.”

The latest development comes 24 hours after President Bola Tinubu asked Fubara to implement the Supreme Court verdict.

Tinubu gave the directive when he hosted Niger Delta stakeholders at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Before the meeting, Tony Okcoha, Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers, had asked Fubara to resign or be impeached.

A UNESCO Fellow in Journalism, Dr. Dons Eze, a prolific writer and author of many books, attended several courses on Journalism and Communication in both Nigeria and overseas, including a Postgraduate Course on Journalism at Warsaw, Poland; Strategic Communication and Practical Communication Approach at RIPA International, London, the United Kingdom, among others.

    NATASHA WAS SUSPENDED FOR GROSS MISCONDUCT, NOT SEXUAL HARASSMENT ALLEGATION – SENATE REPLIES IPU The complaint laid by Senator Natsha Akpoti-Uduaghan at the United Nations Inter parliamentary conference in New York on Tuesday has continued to attract reactions. The Kogi Lawmaker had taken her case before the global institution for them to prevail over what she says is an injustice meted on her. After listening to her complaint, the IPU told Senator Natasha that it will take necessary steps to address the complaints she brought to the union after listening to the other side. The Nigerian Senate has however replied to Senator Natasha’s complaint to the IPU through a letter by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele. The letter was read by the Chairperson of the House of Representatives committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, Honorable Kafilat Ogbara, who is attending the event in an official capacity representing Nigeria. The Senate letter read in part, “Senator Natasha-Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended for gross misconduct and unruly behaviour and not as a result of allegation of sexual harassment or assault. The authority of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria firmly refutes the deliberate misinformation and false narrative being circulated by certain media organisations regarding the sixth months suspension of Senator Natsaha-Akpoti-Uduaghan. “Let it be unequivocally stated that Uduaghan was suspended solely for her persistent act of misconduct and disregard for the Senate Standing Orders.” Honourable Ogbara, however, called for a thorough investigation into the allegation by Senator Natasha against the Senator President, Godswill Akpabio. She maintained that procedures and necessary actions under the Senate rules were observed before Senator Natasha’s suspension. Last week, the Senate suspended the lawmaker in a move that has continued to generate debates across the country. She had initially submitted a petition to the Senate accusing Akpabio of sexual harassment. But the lawmakers threw it out before suspending her even after submitting another petition. Senator Natasha vowed to continue the fight against “injustice”. But in the wake of the suspension, Akpabio denied the accusations and maintained he has never assaulted women. Her altercation with the Senate president started on February 20, 2025, after her seat was changed during plenary. That is not the first time both individuals had issues. In July 2024, Akpabio had while trying to correct her for misconduct told her to follow the rules and that the Senate is not a nightclub where anybody can talk anyhow. The Akwa Ibom lawmaker, however, later apologised to her for the remark.

    IGBO TOWN UNIONS REJECT FG’S RANCHING PLANS IN SOUTH EAST The Association of Igbo Town Unions (ASITU) has strongly rejected the Federal Government’s plan to acquire land in Imo State and other South East states for the establishment of cattle ranches under the 2025 national budget. The union criticized the move as suspicious, provocative, and unjust, arguing that cattle ranching is a private business and should not be funded by the government. In a statement signed by its National President, Chief Emeka Diwe, ASITU raised concerns over the fairness and legality of the proposal, stating that it discriminates against Igbo traders who must acquire land for their businesses without government support. “Cattle rearing, as a private enterprise, should not be the responsibility of the Nigerian government to fund or manage. It is well established that livestock farming is a private business, and the cattle rearing segment of it is primarily controlled by a specific ethnic group in the country.” The union questioned why the federal government is prioritizing ranching for private cattle owners, while Igbo entrepreneurs in other parts of Nigeria struggle to navigate land acquisition without similar support. ASITU highlighted that states in the South East are already grappling with severe land scarcity, with increasing demands for agriculture, urban development, and infrastructure. Allocating more land for private ranching, particularly for an industry dominated by another ethnic group, is seen as a direct injustice to the people of the region. “Our communities are under pressure to provide land for farming, housing, and development. Using our limited land for private ranches is unfair and unacceptable.” The group also accused the government of insensitivity in pushing forward such policies without considering their impact on the socio-economic well-being of the region. “Igbo Traders Get No Such Support”ASITU further argued that Igbo businessmen operating in other parts of Nigeria face significant hurdles in acquiring land and running their enterprises, often without government assistance. In some cases, land acquired by Igbo traders has been forcefully taken away by certain state governments. “Igbo people doing business across Nigeria go through the rigorous process of acquiring land and establishing their ventures without federal intervention. Why should cattle ranchers get special treatment?” ASITU demanded an immediate halt to the federal government’s ranching initiative in the South East, warning that it could deepen ethnic tensions and marginalization. “This proposed ranching scheme rekindles concerns about the continued marginalization of the Igbo people in Nigeria. The government must stop prioritizing the business interests of one ethnic group at the expense of others.” The union called on the government to focus on policies that promote fairness, economic growth, and national unity, rather than implementing divisive programs that alienate indigenous communities. “The South East deserves better. We will not accept any policy that seeks to take away our land for private interests under any circumstances.”
