BAD MARKET FOR PDP IN ANAMBRA STATE AS ASPIRANTS FAIL TO BUY GUBERNATORIAL FORM

As the Peoples Democratic Party closes the sale of its N40m expression of interest and nomination forms for the upcoming Anambra governorship election, no aspirant has stepped forward to purchase them.

The party initially scheduled the sale of forms between February 24 and March 5, with a March 7 deadline for submission.

The Anambra PDP governorship primary is set for April 5, followed by an appeal committee sitting on April 8.

However, an insider in the PDP, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that aspirants are avoiding the party due to internal crises.

The source noted that the ongoing leadership crisis has made aspirants hesitant to invest in the platform.

“As of now, no aspirant has purchased the PDP Anambra governorship nomination forms. They are hesitant due to the party’s instability. The crisis has weakened the party’s influence across different levels, making aspirants cautious about spending such a huge sum,” the source stated.

He further explained that the turmoil, affecting state chapters, zonal bodies, and national organs, has eroded confidence in the party’s ability to conduct a fair primary.

In response to the situation, another party official disclosed that the PDP National Working Committee has revised the election timetable, extending the sale of forms to March 10 to encourage participation.

“The NWC is reviewing the issues, and a revised timetable will be made public before the end of the week. The deadline for purchasing forms has now been extended to March 10,” the source said.

Additionally, a stakeholders’ interactive session with the NWC is scheduled for March 10 at the PDP national headquarters, Wadata Plaza, Abuja.

The PDP’s internal troubles have worsened due to a dispute over the National Secretary position, with Senator Samuel Anyanwu and former National Youth Leader, Sunday Ude-Okoye, battling for the role. The case is scheduled for hearing and judgment at the Supreme Court on March 10.

The situation escalated further after a controversial South-South zonal congress held on February 22, which lacked the approval of PDP governors, creating more divisions within the Board of Trustees, National Working Committee, and National Executive Committee.

PDP National Deputy Legal Adviser, Okechukwu Osuoha, acknowledged the party’s crisis but remained optimistic about its chances in Anambra.

“I am not surprised by the situation, but I know the National Organising Secretary has set the ball rolling for the governorship election,” Osuoha said.

He admitted that internal disputes, litigation, and factional struggles have discouraged aspirants but insisted that PDP remains a formidable force.

“Yes, there are unresolved issues from the congresses, but PDP has structures across the country, and these matters will be settled soon. Anambra has always been politically challenging, but things will improve,” he added.

However, PDP Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, argued that the wider disillusionment with Nigeria’s electoral process is the main reason aspirants are reluctant to contest.

“People are tired of investing millions in an election process that lacks credibility. Even if you win fairly, political interference from the presidency can overturn results. That’s why many are hesitant,” Osadolor stated.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission has confirmed that the Anambra State governorship election will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025.

Attempts to reach PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, and the National Organising Secretary for comments were unsuccessful as they neither answered calls nor responded to messages.

The delegation was led by Seriake Dickson, a former governor of Bayelsa state. Dickson, a member of the senate’s ethics and privileges committee that recommended Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension, shared a photo of the visit on his social media pages. He said his engagement with the tax reform bills had kept him away from senate proceedings on the day of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension. “The public may recall that, for the past 3 days, I was attending the 3-day workshop on the Tax Reform Bills which started on Wednesday 5th of March and ended this evening, Friday 7th of March,” he said. “This is why I was not available yesterday to sit as a member of the Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, Privileges and Public Petitions in respect of the issues concerning our colleague Distinguished Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan’s suspension, haven been assured by the Committee Chairman that the hearing would hold on Wednesday the 11th of March for which notices had already been issued. The dispute escalated into allegations of sexual harassment by the Kogi senator against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. Her suspension has sparked widespread debate and criticisms, particularly from women’s rights groups and civil society organisations. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension, saying the move reeks of a grand cover-up attempt from Akpabio.

FUBARA’S COMMISSIONERS, ELECTORAL COMMISSION CHAIRMAN DRAG RIVERS ASSEMBLY TO COURT AS TWO ELECTORAL COMMISSIONERS RESIGN

FUBARA’S COMMISSIONERS, ELECTORAL COMMISSION CHAIRMAN DRAG RIVERS ASSEMBLY TO COURT AS TWO ELECTORAL COMMISSIONERS RESIGN The authority of the Martin Amaewhule-led Rivers State House of Assembly to nullify Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s appointment of 19 commissioners is now a subject of litigation at the Rivers State High Court. The commissioners whose appointments were cleared by four lawmakers loyal to Governor Fubara, have filed a suit to restrain the Assembly from declaring their appointments illegal. This comes in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling affirming Amaewhule as the legitimate Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly after dismissing Governor Fubara’s cross-appeal. RISIEC Chairman, Commissioners Challenge Assembly’s SummonsAlso challenging the House’s authority to summon them for questioning is the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RISIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), along with his commissioners. The Assembly had initially given Enebeli a 48-hour ultimatum to appear before it and explain the circumstances surrounding the nullified October 2024 Local Government Elections. However, after his failure to appear, the deadline was extended by 72 hours. In their suit, Governor Fubara’s commissioners are seeking an interlocutory injunction restraining Amaewhule and 26 others from taking any steps to enforce or act upon resolutions passed on March 5. They are also asking the court to issue an order preventing the Assembly from interfering in their duties as commissioners in the state executive council. Similarly, Justice Enebeli (rtd) and his RISIEC team are asking the court to restrain the Assembly from forcing them to appear before it, warning that any such move would be unlawful. Justice Frank Onyiri, ruling on the matter, granted leave for the claimants to serve the Assembly through substituted means and adjourned the hearing to April 17, 2025. Assembly Extends Summons Deadline, Demands AccountabilityDuring its Wednesday plenary session, the Assembly reaffirmed its decision to summon Enebeli and his commissioners, insisting they must explain the sources of funding for the nullified local government election and the planned expenditure for the fresh election scheduled for August 9, 2025. House Leader, Major Jack, informed the lawmakers that official letters were sent to RISIEC officials and Governor Fubara, urging him to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill. However, neither the governor nor the RISIEC chairman has responded to the invitations. Speaker Martin Amaewhule warned that the Assembly was taking legislative notice of Governor Fubara’s refusal to present the 2025 budget and would take necessary action at the appropriate time. The Assembly also passed a resolution instructing the Clerk of the House to invite RISIEC officials again to appear before lawmakers on March 10, 2025. The lawmakers threatened to invoke Section 129 (1) (d) of the Constitution should they fail to show up. Security Tensions Escalate Over Rivers Political CrisisMeanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command has vowed to clamp down on threats to national security, following warnings from militant groups threatening to attack oil installations due to the ongoing political crisis. Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, issued a stern warning to those planning violence. He said, “Nobody has a monopoly on violence. If fire is coming from heaven, it will not consume only one person, definitely everybody will be consumed.” He reassured residents that the police were fully prepared to handle any disturbances. Adepoju added, “We are ready for anything that comes. All eyes are on Rivers State now, and we will not allow anyone to heat the polity.” Meanwhile, two members of the state electoral commission have tendered their resignation, citing recent developments in the state. Those who submitted their resignation letters to the Chairman of the state independent electoral commission were Professor Simon Emenike Weli and Dr. Lazbery Nyebuchi Nnah. Their resignation letters were dated March 7, ,2025.
