GUNMEN ABDUCT CATHOLIC PRIEST IN PORT HARCOURT

DAREDEVIL kidnappers have abducted a Catholic Priest of Port Harcourt Diocese, Rev. Father Livinus Maurice, along with two others.

Fr. Maurice is the Parish Priest of St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Isokpo, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The identities of the two others abducted alongside the priest could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report on Saturday afternoon.

They were reportedly abducted while returning from a hospital visitation along the Elele-Isiokpo road in Ikwere Local Government Area of the State on Wednesday.

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt and signed by the Catholic Diocese of Port Harcourt on behalf of the Bishop, Reverend Father Bernadine Anaele, said the incident took place on Wednesday, February 12.

It partly reads, “Although the matter has been reported to the security agencies, Christ faithful of Port Harcourt Diocese and Nigeria at large have been urged to intensify prayers for the safe and unconditional release of the priest those with him.”

When contacted, the spokesperson for the state Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, saying an investigation was ongoing to ensure the victims’ release and the arrest of the culprits.

She stated, “Yes, the command is aware of the incident, and we are making frantic efforts to ensure the priest, and two others are released unhurt.

“Also, the command has alerted all tactical units to ensure the suspects are apprehended and made to face the law.”

    LEGISLATIVE LAWYERS ASK SUPREME COURT TO REVIEW RIVERS JUDGEMENT The protracted political crisis in Rivers State took another twist on Thursday as the Association of Legislative Drafting and Advocacy Practitioners, ALDRAP, asked the Supreme Court to review its February 28, 2025, judgment that restored 27 members of the State Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule. The Supreme Court, in the judgment delivered by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim, also ordered Governor Sim Fubara to re-present the state’s 2025 budget to the Amaewhule-led Assembly. The apex court, in the same vein, stopped the payment of allocations from the Federation Account to the Rivers State Government. It ruled that funds would be released to Fubara’s government only when a lawful Appropriation Law is enacted by the Assembly led by Amaewhule. The budget had earlier been passed into law after Fubara presented it to the Victor Oko-Jumbo-led three-man faction of the Assembly. However, ALDRAP, an association of professional legislative lawyers, is asking the Supreme Court to review the judgment, which was seen by many as a final resolution of key issues involved in the Rivers political crisis. The legislative lawyers made the request for a review of the judgment in a letter dated March 13, 2025, and addressed to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN. According to the letter signed by ALDRAP’s lawyer, Kenneth Amadi, the request is based on the provisions of Order 8 Rule 16 of the Supreme Court Rules, 2024. Among other contentions, the lawyers argued that the February 28 Supreme Court judgment did not comply with previous apex court verdicts on similar cases. The letter is titled “Application for Review by a Full Panel of Seven Justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria of the Judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria Dated February 28, 2025, Delivered by Hon. Justice Emmanuel Agim, JSC, and a Panel of Five Justices, Pursuant to Order 8 Rule 16, Supreme Court Rules, 2024, and Other Relevant Laws as the Supreme Court Deems Appropriate.” Parts of the letter read: “By way of introduction, my name is Kenneth A. Amadi, Esq. I am a legal practitioner and lawyer to the Association of Legislative Drafting and Advocacy Practitioners (ALDRAP), which is a professional association of lawyers in Nigeria with its national secretariat inside the National Assembly complex, Abuja. “We write to request permission to submit an application on the above-named subject matter. This application for a review of the Supreme Court judgment of February 28, 2025, is made in accordance with the Supreme Court of Nigeria Rules, 2024, on the following grounds: “A full panel of seven judges instead of the five judges that sat on the Rivers State House of Assembly case. *”Failure of the panel of judges to follow and comply with the former judgments of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, such as the case of Attorney-General of Bendel State v. Attorney-General of the Federation (1981).” In an analysis of the verdict, the Executive Secretary of ALDRAP, Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja, faulted the Supreme Court judgment for failing to take note of the record of proceedings of the Rivers State House of Assembly concerning the defection of the 27 lawmakers. Citing a court case, Hon. J. I. Ekpenkhio v. Hon. Matthew Egbadon (1962-2001)1 Legislative Law Reports of Nigeria (LLRN) pages 307 to 336, Jaja said: “The Supreme Court of Nigeria held that the Court has a duty to take judicial notice of the record of proceedings of the House of Assembly as stipulated under Section 73 of the Evidence Act. “In accordance with the above-named judgment, it is reasonable to expect that the Supreme Court of Nigeria would consider the words and actions of Amaewhule and the 26 others on the floor of the Rivers State House of…

    CONTEMPT: NATASHA DRAGS AKPABIO, OTHERS TO COURT The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and other top legislative officials risk imprisonment for allegedly defying a court order. Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has initiated contempt proceedings against them, with the Federal High Court in Abuja issuing Form 48 as a notice of their disobedience. The legal action stems from suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/384/2025, filed by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan against the Clerk of the National Assembly, the Senate, Senate President Akpabio, and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct, Senator Neda Imasuem. The notice, signed by the court registrar pursuant to Section 72 of the Sheriff and Civil Process Act 2004, emphasised the gravity of the situation. Court Warns Akpabio, Senate Officials: Obey or Face Prison The court explicitly warned the defendants that their actions constitute contempt, which could lead to imprisonment if they fail to comply. “Despite being duly served with the enrolled order on the 5th day of March 2025, you, the Defendants/Contemnors, have deliberately and contumaciously disregarded its binding directive,” the court stated. The legal notice further reiterated: “Take notice that pursuant to Section 72 of the Sheriffs and Civil Processes Act, your wilful disobedience of the order of this Honourable Court renders you liable for contempt of court, for which you may be committed to prison unless you comply.” The court had previously issued an order on 4th March 2025, restraining the Senate from proceeding with an investigation into Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s alleged misconduct during a February 20 plenary session. The order mandated that all defendants, including Senate leadership, cease actions against the senator until a final determination on the case. Despite the clear directive, the defendants reportedly proceeded with the probe, leading to the contempt proceedings. The court highlighted that any actions taken in violation of its order are “null, void, and of no effect whatsoever.” The court’s enrolled order also granted permission for the plaintiff to serve the Senate with case documents through alternative means, including pasting them at the National Assembly or publishing them in national newspapers. Additionally, the order sought to prevent the Senate’s Ethics Committee, chaired by Senator Imasuem, from advancing its inquiry into Akpoti-Uduaghan’s conduct. The court required the Senate to show cause as to why an interlocutory injunction should not be granted, reinforcing that the plaintiff’s privileges as a senator must be upheld in accordance with the Nigerian Constitution, Senate Standing Orders, and the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act. With the issuance of Form 48, the Senate President and other officials now face legal consequences unless they comply with the court’s directives. Observers note that this case underscores the judiciary’s role in checking legislative overreach and upholding the rule of law. Legal analysts believe that the next steps in the case could significantly impact the Senate’s operations and Akpabio’s leadership. Should the court escalate the matter to Form 49, which calls for direct committal proceedings, Akpabio and his co-defendants may be forced to personally defend their actions or face severe sanctions, including possible imprisonment. As the controversy unfolds, political watchers are keen to see whether the Senate leadership will comply with the court order or continue its defiant stance, potentially leading to a major constitutional confrontation.
