ENUGU PDP APPEALS TO LABOUR PARTY GOVERNORSHIP CANDIDATE, CHIJIOKE EDEOGA, TO REJOIN PARTY

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State has appealed to the 2023 Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in the state, Chijioke Edeoga, to rejoin the PDP.

The Chairperson of the PDP in Enugu State, Martin Chukwunweike, made the appeal when he led other executive members of the party to the residence of Mr Edeoga in Enugu on Friday

Edeoga joined the LP in August 2022 after he failed to secure the PDP governorship ticket ahead of the 2023 election which was won by Peter Mbah, who eventually emerged governor.

The LP candidate came second in the general election.

He is expected to challenge Mr Mbah again in the forthcoming 2027 governorship election in the state.

Why we want Edeoga back to PDP

Speaking to reporters after their closed-door meeting, Dr. Chukwunweike explained that the visit to Mr Edeoga’s residence was part of PDP’s plan to reunite with members who exited the party.

The chairperson said he and Governor Mbah held a meeting and agreed that there was a need to ensure that Enugu remains a PDP state.

“We took the decision to consult some of our very key people, who have been PDP all along. And number one is the person we are in his house now, His Excellency, Chijioke Edeoga.

“Chijioke Edeoga has gone to the House of Representatives under PDP; when we discussed, he told me plainly that he owes a lot to PDP, he has become a lot because of PDP; he has been in the state executive of PDP, and a lot of other things,” Mr Chukwunweike stated.

Continuing, he said: “It was painful to me to come and be acting as PDP chairman without him being in PDP.

“So, the governor approved that I should go and talk to him and beg him to come back to PDP, because he knows that he is also a force to reckon with in Enugu State politics.”

“We have spoken, we have had a lot of discussions before now and today, we came to his house with members of my executive and we have discussed with him inside and he is Okay with our visit, he is very satisfied with our visit and I believe from what he told us that we are going to have him back in the party.”

The chairperson said the PDP leadership in Enugu understood that Mr Edeoga would need time to consult with followers and supporters before rejoining the party.

Also speaking to reporters, Edeoga said he has been asked to return to the PDP, but he would need to consult with followers and supporters before taking a decision.

“I have told them that I will consult; I will consult widely because I’m a product of several men of goodwill, men and women of goodwill.

“I will have to take back the message of the chairman and his team; I have enormous respect for the team and the chairman,” he said.

“It is not even in the nature of the Igbo man to hear such a weighty thing and respond immediately. I’m going to take it home and I will as quickly as possible get back to the chairman and my position will be known.”

I’M GLAD MY GOVT LAID FOUNDATION FOR 26 YEARS OF UNBROKEN DEMOCRACY – ABDULSALAMI ABUBAKAR Former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), says he is excited over the contribution of his government to Nigeria’s 26 years of unbroken democracy. The then military Head of State ushered in this era of democracy when he handed over power to the elected President on 29th May 1999, signaling commencement of the 4th Republic. Speaking at the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) public presentation of its book titled, ‘100 Years Of Political Parties Evolution In Nigeria (1923 – 2023)’, on Thursday in Abuja, the former military ruler urged Nigerians to continue to make democracy survive. Abdulsalami was also the Chairman of the occasion, with the theme, “100 years of Political Parties Evolution in Nigeria – The Imperative of Nigeria’s Political Stability: Issues and Solutions”. Represented by his Chief Security Officer (CSO), Gen. Abdulrashid Aliyu, the former Head of State noted that year 2025 will make it 102 years of the formation of political parties in the country, thus a milestone in the nation’s democratic process. “I commend the leadership of IPAC for its political savvy and foresight in articulating and writing this historic book on 100 Years of Political Parties Evolution in Nigeria, 1923 – 2023. “Despite military interventions, democracy has come to stay in Nigeria. There is no substitute to the government of the people, by the people and for the people, which democracy represents as sovereignty resides with the people. “This year will also make it 26 years of unbroken democracy in Nigeria, the longest period of constitutional governance since 1st October 1960, when the country got Independence from the British colonial masters. “My government laid this solid foundation for democratic governance. It also shows that when leaders are patriotic, passionate, resolute and unwavering in building strong democratic structures and institutions, democracy could flourish and yield its dividends to citizens. “We should therefore keep watering and nurturing the tree of democracy as there is no alternative to civil rule. Our democracy has been tested and shaken by reactionary forces and survived. It is a testament to citizen’s belief and resilience in representative governance. “It has become expedient to explore political parties’ development priorities so as to consolidate the nation’s democracy and ensure an environment conducive for successful elections and political stability which is in tandem with the IPAC mandate. “We have all learned a lot in this longest period of democracy in Nigeria, as we continue the ongoing Constitution and Electoral Act Amendments to correct obvious flaws in the electoral process and imbibe democratic ideals, ethics and values, the nation will yet again witness sustainable democracy and development.” He urged the nation’s political parties to consider some of the past practices in party democracy which are currently being downplayed by political players. He said, “Some of these are supremacy of the party leadership, adherence to party manifestoes; and formation of party and membership based on ideology.” Speaking earlier, the chief host and National Chairman of IPAC, Alhaji Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, said that the launch of the book that marks a century of political party activities in the country remains significant.

YOU’RE JOBLESS, FRUSTRATED – SHEHU SANI REPLIES EL-RUFAI

YOU’RE JOBLESS, FRUSTRATED – SHEHU SANI REPLIES EL-RUFAI Activist and politician, Senator Shehu Sani, has taken a swipe at ex-Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, calling him a “midget professor” who is jobless and frustrated after being denied a role in the Tinubu’-led administration. Sani was responding to El-Rufai’s recent criticism of the All Progressives Congress (APC), where he accused Tinubu’s administration of attempting to destroy opposition parties. In a post on his official X handle on Thursday, January 30, Sani slammed El-Rufai’s comments as hypocritical, accusing him of practising tyranny and unleashing oppression while in office. “Out of power, he is sanctimoniously preaching democracy to the country he helped to wreck, plundered, and persecuted. “He demonized the opposition when in the palace and now embraces them in the wilderness,” Sani wrote. He also mocked El-Rufai’s claim that the country is being led by illiterates, stressing that the former Kaduna governor’s grievances are due to the Tinubu administration ignoring him. “He is like a man who was turned down by a woman and then resorted to speaking ill of her. Tinubu was his angel until he was ‘evicted from the house’; now he tells the world Tinubu is a demon. “The government is led by illiterates because they refused to hire professor midget,” Sani said. Sani further described El-Rufai as a desperate figure now seeking attention by stoking sectional sentiments. “He is now jobless, most times seeking to be invited to northern public events where he will whip up sectional sentiments,” Sani added. El-Rufai made his comments on Monday at a national conference in Abuja focused on strengthening democracy in Nigeria. He criticized the ruling party, describing the state of governance and opposition in the country as a “national emergency.” “You cannot afford to have illiterates, semi-illiterates, and cunning people as your leaders. “This is why we end up with the poor leadership we have today,” El-Rufai stated at the event which had former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, in attendance.
