POLICE ARREST MAN WHO CUT OFF HIS WIFE’S HAND IN ENUGU

Operatives of Okpuje Division of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested a 33-year-old Sunday Echege, a resident of Ibagwa-Agu Farm Settlement in Ibagwa-Ani community of Nsukka local government area for severing the left wrist of his wife, Chinonso Echege over suspected infidelity.

A statement by the spokesman of the command, SP Daniel Ndukwe disclosed that the arrest was made possible with the assistance of law-abiding members of the community, adding that the machete used in committing the crime has been recovered from the suspect.

Ndukwe stated that preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect claimed to have acted out of suspicion that his wife was involved in extramarital affairs.

He added that the suspect will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), to ensure thorough and timely investigation on the incident.

CP Uzuegbu, according to the statement, further urged couples to resolve their differences through love, understanding, and legal means, rather than resorting to violent criminal acts.

Meanwhile, the Enugu State government has moved the wife to the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital for medical care.

The Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development in the state, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, disclosed this on Tuesday.

“This is yet another sad development, which we are following up with to ensure that justice is done.

“The information we have that the man in question aimed for the wife’s head during a disagreement, but ended up chopping off the left hand with which she tried to fend off the machete. She also sustained injury on the right hand.

“So, we swung into action immediately we got the information and had him arrested immediately. So, he is now in police custody.

“But the most urgent matter now is to save the victim’s life. So, we have moved her to Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu, where she is currently receiving full medical attention.”

She maintained that the state government is taking the case very seriously, saying the wife of the governor, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah is personally on the gruesome matter and has vowed that justice must be served.

The Commissioner warned Enugu residents to refrain from all manner of domestic and gender-based violence as well as child abuse, vowing that the administration would never treat such with levity.

COURT GRANTS SOWORE ₦10M BAIL, ORDERS PASSPORT SURRENDER, GIVES 24-HOUR EXTENSION TO MEET CONDITION Justice Musa Suleiman Liman of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to Omoyele Sowore, the former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), in the amount of N10 million with one surety of the same amount. The court also ruled that the surety must have verified landed property in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and the applicant must deposit his passport with the court and provide an affidavit of means. Sowore, who has been undergoing legal proceedings, was initially required to meet the bail conditions within a set timeframe. However, the court granted him a 24-hour extension to fulfill the terms. Meanwhile his lawyer, Abubakar Marshal has applied for extension of time to enable the applicant to perfect his bail conditions. The court adjourned ruling on his bail application proceedings on Wednesday to Thursday, January 30, 2025. Sowore, accompanied by his legal team on Thursday, was met by a crowd of supporters outside the courthouse, demanding his release and condemning the charges against him as politically motivated. The former African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate is facing 16 cybercrime charges filed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, following his reference to the police chief as an “Illegal IG.” Sowore was detained at the Nigerian Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) office in Abuja on Monday after voluntarily honouring a police invitation. His detention followed his refusal to accept bail conditions set by the police. On Wednesday, defence counsel Abubakar Marshal urged the court to grant Sowore bail on self-recognizance and the most liberal terms. He presented evidence showing that his client was invited via a WhatsApp message from the complainant and had honoured the invitation in good faith. Marshal also noted that the complainant acknowledged Sowore’s right to bail. However, the prosecution, led by M.U. Jonathan, opposed the bail application and requested its dismissal. After hearing arguments from both sides, the judge adjourned the case to 1 pm on Thursday for a ruling on the bail request.

EL-RUFAI PREACHING HYGIENE TO NIGERIA AFTER LEAVING HEAP OF GARBAGE IN KADUNA – SHEHU SANI

EL-RUFAI PREACHING HYGIENE TO NIGERIA AFTER LEAVING HEAP OF GARBAGE IN KADUNA,’ – SHEHU SANI A former lawmaker representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Shehu Sani, has accused former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, of practising tyranny while in power and now pretending to preach democracy. Although Sani did not mention El-Rufai’s name in his tweet on X on Thursday, SaharaReporters confirmed that the former lawmaker earlier on Wednesday told Punch Newspaper some of the things he posted about El-Rufai in a phone conversation. Sani criticised the former governor for his alleged intolerance towards the opposition while in office and accused him of trying to rewrite his political history after leaving power. This followed El-Rufai’s recent criticism of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Sani also accused the former Kaduna governor of leaving behind a legacy of debt and division in the state. He said, “When in power in Kaduna, he practised tyranny and unleashed evil; out of power, he is sanctimoniously preaching democracy to the country he helped to wreck, plundered, and persecuted. “He demonised the opposition when in the palace and now embraces them when in the wilderness. “He is like a man who is turned down by a woman and resorted to speaking ill of her. Tinubu was his angel until when he was ‘evicted from the house,’ now telling the world he is a demon. “The government is led by illiterates because they refused to hire Professor midget. “If he is in a Keke Napep, he will call it a Lamborghini; if he is thrown out of the Lamborghini, he will call it a Keke Napep. “The man with a history of undisguised intolerance to opposition and hypersensitive allergy to criticisms has no moral and saintly feet to stand on the pulpit of democracy to preach about good governance. “He left a heap of garbage in Kaduna and is now preaching hygiene to a country that has not forgotten the history of his dirt. “The man who looted Kaduna State, piled up debt for our people, used religion to divide the people of the state, enriched and shared lands with friends and family members, disobeyed court orders, persecuted journalists, arrested people for criticising him on social media, and monetised banditry is now telling others how to govern. “If this man was admitted into Tinubu’s government, no critic of the government in the North or South would have been spared from his toxicity. “He thought he would have a puppet governor in Kaduna State; now it’s the opposite, and he is frustrated.” “He is now jobless, most times seeking to be invited to northern public events where he will whip up sectional sentiments,” he added.
