AGGRIEVED APC MEMBERS FAULT MIRANDA’S ELECTION AS LAGOS ASSEMBLY SPEAKER

Some members of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos State have expressed dissatisfaction with the election of Mojisola Meranda as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, following the removal of Mudashiru Obasa over allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation.

Meranda, formerly the Deputy Speaker, was elected Speaker on January 13, 2025, after lawmakers voted to oust Obasa, who has denied the allegations.

A faction within the party representing Lagos West, Progressives Alliance, criticised the decision to shift the Speakership to Lagos Central, calling it an act of “injustice” against Lagos West, which they noted accounts for half of the Assembly’s 40 lawmakers.

This was contained in a statement by the group’s secretary, Segun Banjo, and made available to newsmen on Monday.

Banjo said, “We have no issue with Obasa’s removal. Our concern is that the lawmakers, in electing Meranda as the new Speaker, were not well guided.

“It is appalling and disturbing that they passed over all the eminently qualified 20 lawmakers from our zone, which has the largest electoral asset in terms of votes and membership of the APC, and handed it over to Lagos Central, where Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also comes from.

“It’s nowhere in the House’s rule book that if a Speaker is removed, his replacement must be his deputy. Furthermore, examples of political correctness guided by fair distribution of political offices that address both religious and sectional interests abound in the political space in Nigeria.”

The statement also criticised members of the Governor’s Advisory Council from Lagos West for failing to secure the Speakership for the zone, saying, “In any case, we leave them to posterity to judge them.”

APC EXPELS FORMER MINISTER OVER ALLEGED ANTI-PARTY ACTIVITIES The All Progressives Congress, APC, has expelled Rauf Aregbesola, a former Minister of Interior and ex-Governor of Osun State, over alleged anti-party activities. Aregbesola, who was governor of Osun State for two terms, was accused of breaching Article 21 of the APC Constitution, which outlines disciplinary measures for members. His expulsion was confirmed in an official letter from the party leadership. The letter, titled “Allegations of Anti-Party Activities – Conveyance of State Exco Decision to You,” and signed jointly by Tajudeen Lawal, State Chairman, and Alao Olabisi Kamoru, Secretary, stated that the decision followed an investigation and approval by the State Executive Committee, SEC. “At the end of the investigation, the SEC considered the report of the Disciplinary Committee. Having carefully reviewed the findings and recommendations, the SEC resolved to approve your immediate expulsion from the APC,” the letter read. The APC alleged that Aregbesola’s actions had undermined the unity and integrity of the party, warning him against identifying as a member or acting on behalf of the party in any capacity. Aregbesola had previously led a faction within the APC known as The Osun Progressives, which was later rebranded as the Omoluabi Caucus. The faction had been in conflict with the state party leadership. His expulsion followed a meeting of the Omoluabi Caucus on Sunday, during which the group, under his leadership, announced its decision to leave the APC. At the meeting, Aregbesola reportedly told supporters that their departure was necessary due to the party’s declining influence in Osun State. “We are leaving to build a stronger political movement,” he was quoted as saying. Meanwhile, APC officials in Osun State have maintained that the disciplinary action was necessary to restore order within the party. “The party cannot tolerate disloyalty and divisive actions,” an unnamed official stated.

FIGHT BREAKS OUT AT PDP BOT MEETING

FIGHT BREAKS OUT AT PDP BoT MEETING A fight has broken out at the headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where a meeting of the party’s board of trustees (BoT) is taking place. The altercation began when Sunday Ude-Okoye, a party chieftain, was denied access to the meeting. BACKGROUND The PDP has been embroiled in a fresh leadership crisis as both Samuel Anyanwu and Ude-Okoye laying claim to the position of the national secretary. In December 2024, the court of appeal ruled that Ude-Okoye should replace Anyanwu as the PDP national secretary. The south-east zonal executive committee of the party nominated Udeh-Okoye to replace Anyanwu after he became the PDP gubernatorial candidate in Imo state in 2023. Anyanwu had obtained several court injunctions preventing his removal from office. However, in a verdict delivered on December 20, 2024, Ridwan Abdullahi, the appeal court judge, dismissed the judgment of the high court, which prevented Anyanwu’s removal, for “lacking in merit”. Following the judgment, Ude-Okoye has been parading himself as the national secretary of the party. But Anyanwu said he appealed the judgment and also filed for a stay of execution at the supreme court same day the appeal court delivered the verdict in favour of Ude-Okoye. ‘THE FIGHT’ On Wednesday, Anyanwu was present at the commencement of the meeting while Ude-Okoye arrived some minutes later, but was prevented from attending the meeting. Ude-Okoye attempted to force his way in but was firmly blocked by Emmanuel Okoronkwo, a party protocol officer and Anyanwu’s aide. His supporters then scaled the fence into the secretariat premises, overpowering Okoronkwo and others who had blocked Ude-Okoye from entering the meeting hall. Security personnel initially struggled to maintain order at the party’s secretariat. Adolphus Wabara, chairman of the BoT, and Umar Damagum, PDP chairman, are among the party members attending the meeting. Ude-Okoye is currently outside the BoT meeting hall with his supporters. Security has been beefed up at the PDP headquarters, with police and military vans patrolling the area to maintain order.
