TINUBU HAPPY WITH GOVERNORS FOR SUPPORTING TAX REFORM BILLS

President Bola Tinubu expresses his appreciation for the Nigeria Governors’ Forum following their unanimous endorsement of the four Tax Reform Bills currently under consideration by the National Assembly.

In a statement which Bayo Onanuga, his spokesman, issued on his behalf on Friday, Tinubu lauded the governors for their bold leadership and commitment to fostering unity among leaders nationwide, transcending regional, ethnic, and political barriers to advance Nigeria’s development.

“Thursday’s productive consultation between the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the Presidential Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy is a commendable example of cooperation between the Federal and State governments.”

“He extends special commendations to the Chairman of the Governors’ Forum, Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, for successfully galvanising support among his peers for these transformative tax bills to rejuvenate the national economy and enhance Nigeria’s investment climate.

“He also commends the Progressive Governors Forum, the Northern Governors Forum, and all other groups that made the bipartisan resolution of the controversy stirred by the tax bills possible.

“President Tinubu underscores that the primary aim of the Tax Reform Bills, which is pro-poor, is to promote national interests, improve the competitiveness of Nigeria’s economy, and attract both local and foreign investments.

“He said updating the country’s outdated tax laws is essential to this endeavour. The President notes that the dialogue between the NGF and the Presidential Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy Reform highlights the power of constructive conversation in resolving differences.

“President Tinubu regards the governors as vital contributors to nation-building and affirms his commitment to partnering with them to promote economic growth, national harmony, peace, and stability.

“He also encourages other stakeholders with ideas and suggestions for refining the Tax Bills to engage with the ongoing legislative process at the National Assembly.

“Finally, President Tinubu urges the National Assembly to expedite the legislative process for these crucial bills so that the country can swiftly reap the benefits of the reforms.”

HOW PRESIDENT TINUBU MEDDLED IN LAGOS ASSEMBLY AFFAIRS The recent impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly has been described as a long-overdue decision, influenced by President Bola Tinubu’s intervention and Obasa’s defiance. A prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Fouad Oki, has shed light on the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. According to Oki, President Tinubu made “efforts” to mediate the crisis within the assembly, but Obasa’s unyielding stance led to his eventual removal. Speaking on a Channels TV programme, Oki disclosed that President Tinubu intervened following concerns raised by members of the party’s Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC). However, the president reportedly encountered resistance from Obasa, which Oki described as the final straw. “Before the president came home, this issue had been lingering. In the wisdom of members of the GAC, the president’s attention was called,” Oki explained. “The president, as father and leader, called a meeting wherein he tried to make sense of the observations raised by elders of the party. Unfortunately, the president saw by himself a recalcitrant Obasa. I think that is what broke the camel’s back.” Obasa’s impeachment, which occurred on Monday, followed allegations of fraud that had been simmering for months. The former speaker was replaced by Mojisola Meranda, marking a shift in the leadership of the Lagos State Assembly. Oki emphasised that the decision to impeach Obasa was not taken lightly, noting that it was a culmination of unresolved tensions and Obasa’s failure to heed party elders’ advice. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had been petitioned to investigate Obasa over allegations of financial misconduct, breach of public trust, and abuse of office. A petition filed by the Progressive Youth Movement of Ikeja, Lagos State, accuses Obasa of using proxy companies to embezzle funds from the Lagos House of Assembly and violating due process and procurement regulations. The petition, dated December 17, alleges that the Finance Management Committee had not met officially since the 10th Assembly was inaugurated, allowing Obasa to make unauthorised financial decisions. The Lagos State Anti-Corruption Coalition previously filed a petition with the EFCC to investigate allegations of mismanaging N17 billion earmarked for constructing a gate at the Lagos State House of Assembly, as reported by SaharaReporters. According to the petition obtained by SaharaReporters, the Progressive Youth Movement alleged that the Speaker awarded N469 million contract for the Construction of Ikeja Local Government Secretariat to Orgnitek Consult Limited, identifying it as one of the companies used to perpetrate his fraudulent activities. The group also alleged that the Speaker approved N200 million for thanksgiving at the Lagos State House of Assembly, saying it shouldn’t have cost more than N2 million. When SaharaReporters contacted the Speaker, he had described the allegations as “nonsensical and political.”

WHY BOKO HARAM, BANDITS THRIVE: HIOW NGOs, OTHERS AID TERRORISTS – RETIRED GENERALS Retired generals from the Army, Navy, and Air Force who were actively involved in Nigeria’s fight against insurgency, especially against Boko Haram, have closely examined the situation and concluded that some non-governmental organizations (NGOs), international agencies, and certain interest groups have contributed to the ongoing terrorism and violent crimes in the country. According to The Vanguard, it was reported that recently, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, had called on the Federal Government to invite the United Nations to investigate how terrorists and bandits in Nigeria are still receiving arms despite the military’s strong efforts. The armed forces have successfully killed many terrorists and seized thousands of their weapons, yet these groups continue to gain access to advanced weapons. General Musa’s request followed public criticism that the military has not justified the large amounts of money allocated to the fight against terrorism, as terrorist groups, bandits, and kidnappers still manage to obtain sophisticated arms. Speaking on this issue, retired generals—including former theatre commanders, general officers commanding (GOCs), field commanders, and Air Force operational leaders—highlighted the main causes of the ongoing conflict and identified those supporting these violent groups. They also suggested ways to address the problem. However, these retired generals chose to remain anonymous when sharing their views. A retired AOC who spoke to Vanguard correspondent said, “NGOs are deeply involved in this arms inflow. They have ulterior motives here. They deceive us with mosquito nets, donate insecticides and give us some dollars to support infrastructure but make millions of dollars from arms sales, mineral resources export etc. And most of the weapons are sold very cheap to terrorists and bandits, as cheap as $5, $8, $10.” Further talking, he said at one point in the fight against banditry, especially in Kaduna State, security agencies discovered that 450 Boko Haram terrorists had moved from the North-East into the Birnin Gwari forests. However, the government lacked the political will to take necessary action against them, such as launching air strikes or using other methods to eliminate them. He said although the military and security forces are making every possible effort to end banditry and terrorism, but terrorists continue to receive supplies through certain agencies and NGOs that serve as cover for their operations.
