INVESTIGATE IMPEACHED LAGOS ASSEMBLY SPEAKER, OBASA – PDP, LP TELL EFCC

The Lagos State chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) have called on anti-corruption agencies to investigate the recently impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudasiru Obasa.

Their demands came a day after Obasa was removed from office amid allegations of corruption.

PDP Lagos Publicity Secretary, Hakeem Amode, emphasized the need for the Assembly to formally submit a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate the allegations against Obasa.

Amode stated, “This cannot just be left as a verbal accusation. Those making the allegations must provide evidence. The Assembly should submit an official petition to the EFCC so they can conduct a thorough investigation.”

He further added, “If the removal was due to internal party disagreements, that’s their prerogative. However, allegations of fraudulent enrichment and other charges must be properly addressed. Lagosians deserve clarity—was this a systemic issue or a one-off incident? The EFCC must step in to investigate and allow Obasa the opportunity to clear his name.”

Labour Party Secretary, Sam Okpala, echoed similar sentiments, stressing the need for accountability.

“If there are credible allegations against the former Speaker, he should face the law, provided it is not a witch-hunt or persecution. If a prima facie case exists, due process must be followed,” Okpala said.

Prominent PDP chieftain, Chief Bode George, also weighed in, supporting the impeachment and criticizing Obasa for allegedly disrespecting Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during the 2024 budget presentation.

Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today, George described Obasa’s actions as “despicable and dishonourable.”

He remarked, “The way the Speaker treated the Executive Governor during the budget presentation was an outright insult. Standing there for hours and obstructing the presentation was unacceptable and showed a lack of respect for the governor’s office. Such behavior cannot be condoned, even within the same party.”

The PDP and LP have urged transparency in addressing the allegations against Obasa, advocating for a thorough probe to restore public trust.

AGAIN, SECURITY OPERATIVES ARREST MAHDI SHEHU Security personnel, believed to be from the Department of State Services (DSS), have activist Mahdi Shehu. Daily Trust gathered that Mahdi was picked up by plainclothes security operatives at his clinic in Unguwar Dosa around 11:00 a.m. There has been no official statement from security agencies regarding the arrest of the Kaduna-based activist and political commentator. However, Buhari Mahdi, the activist’s son, stated that they had not been able to establish contact with his father. “We don’t know if it was an arrest or an invitation. But they (DSS) picked him up at his clinic in Unguwar Dosa, Kaduna, around 11:00 a.m.,” he said, declining to provide further details. Correspondent reports that in December 2024, the activist was arrested and charged in court for sharing a misleading video on his social media handle. The Kaduna State High Court later granted him bail on January 9, 2025, setting the amount at ₦3 million and requiring two prominent clerics as sureties. The development comes few days after he broke his silence on his current travail. In a series of tweets at the weekend, Shehu appreciated his supporters for their concern, support, and prayers. “During my arrest, detention, and incarceration spanning 12 days, I have a duty and obligation to thank the following classes of people. Those who were genuinely worried, concerned, supportive, and prayerful. I felt your prayers, and they served the purposes they were meant for.” “Those who were happy and celebrative. I am thanking you because you emboldened me and served as a seasoning to my world view. You occupy that row in a stadium who celebrates any club that is winning for that day. “Those who sat on the fence. This class, though, neither concerned, prayerful, supportive, nor celebrative, yet offer their silence or indifference as pond for those willing to come for combative fishing. One day, they will belong somewhere, either as victims or villains, willy-nilly,” Shehu had said. He also apologised for his inability to respond to over 4 million messages across various social media platforms and handles.
