MILITARY BOMBED TERRORISTS, ANYBODY WITH THEM WAS ALSO A CRIMINAL – DEFENCE CHIEF INSISTS

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, on Thursday, insisted that the military only bombed terrorists and criminals in Sokoto State.

According to General Musa, who spoke when he visited Sokoto State amidst the controversy surrounding an airstrike targeted against Lakurawa terrorists, submitted that those targeted were terrorists and anyone found with them during the airstrike was an accomplice.

Recall that a fighter jet bombed two communities in the Silame Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday, killing at least 10 civilians and injuring several others.

The Sokoto State government claimed that some of those killed in the strikes were “innocent villagers”, while the military insisted that the strike was against criminals.

The CDS, while briefing newsmen at the Giginya Cantonment Sokoto during his visit on Thursday, also insisted the military airstrike was targeted at terrorists but added, however, that an investigation would be launched into the matter.

He submitted that the criminals were only trying to twist the narrative in the media to favour them.

“We have individuals that still harbour those people, and once you do that, you make yourself a target. Our appeal is please do not allow them hang around you, do not give them any support in whatever means.”

“The incident that happened yesterday is an operation we conducted. We followed up and ensure we avoided mistakes as much as possible. If there were other mistakes that came up, we will investigate.

“From what we have seen, there were criminals in that place. Anybody that toyed with them was part of them.

“We want to appeal to the media, always understand that those guys want to use the media to send their message across. That is what it is dangerous not to agree to what they are saying,” General Musa stated.

He vowed that despite the controversy surrounding the recent airstrikes, the military would continue with its constitutional duties of protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity by fighting criminal elements but would avoid civilian casualties.

He urged civilians to also avoid staying where the terrorists and criminals are.

He explained that the military “would avoid civilian casualties as long as even they do avoid staying where the criminals are. It makes the job extremely difficult if we say wherever they are with the criminals, we avoid.

“If you are not with them, please leave their area and come out so that it gives us the ability to deal with them decisively.”

EDO LOCAL GOVT CHAIRMEN RESUME DUTIES FOLLOWING COURT ORDER Local government administration in Edo State moved closer to normalcy today as several suspended chairmen resumed office in compliance with a State High Court ruling. Among those returning were the chairmen of Esan South East, Esan North East, and Etsako West local government areas, who received votes of confidence from their respective councillors. The reinstatements follow a December injunction by Justice Efe Ikponmwonba of the Edo State High Court, which declared the suspensions illegal and ordered the immediate reinstatement of the affected chairmen. The order has been widely hailed as a victory for democracy and the rule of law. Barrister Anthony Ehilebo, Special Adviser on Media to PDP gubernatorial candidate Asue Ighodalo, described the decision as a reaffirmation of the judiciary’s independence. “The judiciary has once again demonstrated its role as a safeguard for democracy,” Ehilebo said. “The illegal suspension of these chairmen violated their constitutional rights and undermined the autonomy of local governments.” The reinstatements are seen as a political setback for Governor Monday Okpebholo, marking his first significant loss since assuming office. The suspensions had drawn widespread criticism, with many accusing the state government of leveraging unconstitutional powers to sideline opposition-aligned officials. However, the State Government continues to double down on its position that the Chairmen and Vice-chairmen were lawfully suspended. “An injunction cannot restrain an action that has already been completed”, opined Kassim Afegbua on AIT’s television show Democracy Today. Afegbua is a member of the Edo State Investigative panel set up by Gov. Okpebholo to look into the allegations he brought against the chairmen. Observers have also lauded the federal government for its neutral, pro-LGA autonomy stance. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi have been praised for refusing to endorse what many viewed as an anti-democratic move. Their non-interference has been interpreted as a commitment to upholding democratic norms across all levels of government. For the reinstated chairmen, attention now turns to governance. Hon. Louis Imhandegbelo, chairman of Esan South East local government, expressed gratitude to the judiciary and his councilors for their support, stating: “We are grateful to the judiciary for standing firm on the side of justice. I particularly thank my fellow councillors for the unanimous vote of confidence. Our focus now is to deliver on the mandate given to us by the people.” Analysts believe that the Supreme Court’s July 11th judgment, which upheld constitutional protections for local governments, will likely influence similar disputes in the future, reinforcing Nigeria’s democratic framework.

OYO WORKERS TO ENJOY 86% SALARY INCREASE FROM JANUARY – MAKINDE

OYO WORKERS TO ENJOY 86% SALARY INCREASE FROM JANUARY, MAKINDE A statement by the Commissioner of Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, said with the payment of N80,000 minimum wage from January 1, 2025, the state government will pay workers the sum of N11.9 billion monthly, instead of the current N6.4 billion. According to the statement, Oyelade stated this when he received the state chairman of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Kayode Martins, in his office, on Tuesday. The commissioner said that Governor Seyi Makinde is determined to cater for the welfare of workers, while not compromising the welfare of the generality of the people and the critical sectors. Oyelade further explained that with the monthly increment of 86% in salaries and wages for workers from N6.4 billion to N11.9 billion, Oyo State Government is now committed to the payment of over N143 billion on salaries and wages annually. He noted that Makinde is giving more to workers in the state beyond expectation, adding that the governor has done more than what any other administration has ever done. “Governor Makinde proactively announced a four year promotion of workers in order to avert the promotion crisis that had been on the ground before he came into office in 2019,” the commissioner stated. Responding, Martins said the N80,000 minimum wage and its consequential adjustments in Oyo State is more favourable to workers across all grade levels when compared with other states, including the federal government. The NLC chairman added that Makinde, whom he referred to as “workers’ governor,” has been consistent in his love for workers. “Oyo was the first state to implement the old N30,000 minimum wage and also started negotiating a new minimum wage with labour leaders even before the Federal Government approved the N70,000 minimum wage,” he said. Martins noted that while the federal government added N40,000 across board for its workers as consequential adjustments and Ogun State added N42,000 across board on its consequential adjustments to the new minimum wage, Oyo which has the largest number of workers in the South West and just concluded the process of recruiting 23,000 more workers to its workforce, has done more for its workers. He said the present Oyo State table sees the movement of workers on Grade levels 1 to 6 from N30,000 to N80,000, translating to a N50,000 increment on the salary scale. The labour leader said level 7 and above now enjoy increments of N70,000, N80,000, N90,000 and even over N180,000 being added to workers salaries on the consequential adjustment table. “The graphic implication of this for instance, is that government worker on Grade Level 17 earning N170,000 per month will now earn N360,000,” Martins said. He emphasised that no state in Nigeria has done this. The NLC chairman further said the motivation civil and public servants receive in the prompt payment of salaries on the 25th of every month is unquantifiable in boosting the morale of workers and the state’s economy. Martins stressed that the cordial relationship between Makinde and labour unions was evident in the last industrial action embarked upon by the national body of the unions on December 2, where Oyo State was exempted.
