DISREGARD ARISE TV’S COVERAGE OF TAX REFORM BILLS – SENATE PRESIDENT, AKPABIO

Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, criticized Arise TV, urging Nigerians to disregard its coverage of the new Tax Reform Bill. Akpabio accused the channel of spreading misinformation. Arise TV’s Rufai Oseni responded, asserting their right to reply, sparking controversy and a clash between the media and government.
Arise TV is making headlines after Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, called on Nigerians to disregard the news channel. During a recent statement, Akpabio defended the new Tax Reform Bill, emphasizing that it would benefit Nigerians and that nothing would go wrong with its passage. He criticized Arise TV for allegedly spreading misinformation about the bill, particularly the false claim that the bill had been withdrawn. Akpabio urged the public to focus less on social media and news outlets like Arise TV, which he implied were misrepresenting the situation.

The Senate’s accusations against Arise TV have stirred significant controversy, with accusations of bias and unpatriotic behavior. Supporters of the ruling party, including some APC influencers, have backed Akpabio, agreeing that the station’s reporting is flawed and biased. These critics also singled out Arise TV’s presenter, Rufai Oseni, labeling him as a journalist working against Nigeria’s progress.

In response, Oseni fired back at Akpabio, asserting that his criticism was unprovoked.

FRANCE OFFERING NIGERIA FUNDS TO DESTABILIZE NIGER REPUBLIC, NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES – GENERAL TITANI ALLEGES Niger Republic’s Head of State, General Abdourahamane Tiani, has alleged that France is providing financial support to Nigerian authorities to establish a military base in Borno State. Tiani said the plan is purportedly to destabilize Niger and its neighboring countries. Zagazola Makama, a Lake Chad Basin counterterrorism and insurgency expert, made this known in a post on his X handle on Wednesday. Makama said the Niger’s junta leader made the claim during a recent address, accusing France of meddling in the region and harboring ulterior motives. “France has even offered to give money to Nigerian authorities to establish a base in Borno State, with the sole aim of destabilizing our countries. “We have informed Nigerian authorities, including Nuhu Ribadu and Ahmed Abubakar Rufa’i, of a massive conspiracy to destabilize Niger. “The Gaba Forest, located on the border between Sokoto (Nigeria) and Niger, was chosen as a base by terrorists recruited by France and ISWAP. “Unfortunately, it seems we have chosen our interlocutors badly, because it is their skills that have been exploited by France in an attempt to destabilize us on the Niger, Nigeria, Benin and Burkina Faso borders,” Makama quoted a statement purportedly made by General Tiani. The security expert stated that the assertion marks the latest in a series of accusations directed at France by the Nigerien leader. He said the development reflects the deteriorating relations between Niger and its former colonial power following the military coup in July 2023. “Tiani’s administration has consistently accused France of interfering in Niger’s internal affairs and supporting factions opposed to the ruling junta,” Makama said. In his analysis, the security expertstated that General Tiani’s allegations appear to be grounded more in speculation than substantiated fact. He said, “These allegations seem part of a broader narrative aimed at isolating Nigeria due to its strong ties with France.” Makama argued that such continued, unfounded accusations against Nigeria pose a significant threat to diplomatic relations between the two nations. “General Tiani’s accusations not only undermine these important initiatives but also risk fueling unnecessary tensions between nations that share a common goal of achieving stability and peace in the Sahel region,” he added.

WEAK NAIRA, GOOD, MANY PEOPLE CAN’T TRAVEL AGAIN – TINUBU’S AIDE

WEAK NAIRA, GOOD, MANY PEOPLE CAN’T TRAVEL AGAIN – TINUBU’S AIDE The Special Adviser to the President Bola Tinubu on Economic Matters, Tope Fasua, has said a weaker currency for the country was one of the best policies of the government. Tope Fasua said the country’s currency’s low performance in comparison to other currencies has focused the attention of businesses on sourcing local raw materials. In an interview with Arise TV on Monday night, Fasua noted that the current exchange rate has also stopped Nigerians from leaving the country for other countries. Fasua argued that Nigeria has more students in the United States and the United Kingdom than most developed countries, not because the country’s education was totally bad but because of wrong choices. He said the weak Naira was also addressing it. “I’m giving the advantage of making that currency weaker. Because now we’re focusing more on Naira and what Naira can do. We’re focusing more on what we can do ourselves. We’re focusing more on Nigerian raw materials. Many manufacturing companies have now started sourcing local raw materials rather than importing them. “A lot of people aren’t traveling as many times as they would before. That’s one of the things, especially the middle class. And our middle class were special people. I mean, we assumed that we could travel five, six times on business class every year. “How come Nigeria is the third or fourth country with the highest number of university students in the U.K. and the U.S. of all the countries in the world, we are rubbing shoulders with China with 1.4 or 1.5 billion people, we’re only 200 million people. That means that we’re putting so much money. It is not necessarily a failure of our education. It’s just aspiration. It’s aspiration,” he said. The President’s Economic Adviser stressed that it was wrong for critics to assume the country would grow to be like Western nations that have been developing for years. He emphasized that many Nigerians complaining of no work have decided not to work. According to him, the country has work for the citizens. “The fact that we are rubbing shoulders and expecting that our economy and society will be at par with even the people that gave us colonization, who have had maybe 2,000 years of documented history. That means we have been preposterous. We’ve been preposterous, you know, because we can’t, your child cannot try and be you today. He has to learn and grow. And it’s also a matter of time. “It’s good that the Naira has become weaker, but it has made us focus more. However, what we’re saying is that for those who are enterprising, for people who have work, who want to work, indeed, there’s work in this country. For those who want to work,” Fasua added.
