PDP GOVERNORS GIVE DAMAGUM, NWC THREE MONTHS TO CALL NEC MEETING

Governors elected on the platform of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rose from their meeting with a “strong advice” for the Umar Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC) to call for the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party latest by February.

Since August, the NWC has continued to postpone the NEC expected to discuss some issues bedeviling the party and present a substantive National Chairman of the party who will take over from Damagum and complete the tenure of the suspended Iyorchia Ayu.

In April, the NEC was set for August 15, but was postponed to October 24, and then latter rescheduled to November 28 before it was indefinitely postponed.

In a communique read to journalists by Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State who is also the chairman of the Forum, the governors said, “The Forum notes the concerns of Nigerians, PDP founding fathers, elders and members of our great Party of seeming divisions within the ranks and files.

“The Forum wishes to state categorically that it remains resolute in its determination to ensure unity and cohesion of this great Party that Nigerians have come to trust as the best platform for democratic governance.

“The Forum is constrained to accept the latest postponement of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Party in empathy with our colleague, Governor Umo Eno whose late dear wife will be buried on the same day earlier scheduled for NEC.

“The Forum is strongly advising the NWC to call NEC latest by the first week of February 2025 to allow for elaborate consultations with critical stakeholders of the Party. The period between November and February is to address the existential problems confronting the Party, with a deliberate timeline of activities within the period under review to address issues of leadership and litigations confronting the Party.”

Mohammed also said the Forum empathized with Nigerians who are “groaning under the oppressive economic hardship foisted on the nation by the policies and decisions of the APC-led Federal Government.”

The Governors therefore called on President Bola Tinubu “to urgently review both macroeconomic and fiscal policies that will address the welfare and well-being of Nigerians.”

The Forum also pledged that “all PDP Governors will continue to aggressively pursue policies and programs that will reduce the hardship and ensure progress and development.”

They also lamented about the Edo and Ondo State Governorship elections won by the APC and asked the judiciary to save the country’s democracy.

IT IS NOT A CRIMINAL OFFENCE IF FUBARA IS IMPEACHED – WIKE, GIVES CONDITION FOR PEACE IN RIVERS Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, has said it is not “a criminal offence” if the governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara is impeached. Speaking during a media chat on Wednesday, Wike said Fubara should be impeached if he has done what warrants impeachment. He also expressed frustration over the political crisis in Rivers State, emphasising the importance of upholding the rule of law. The minister also criticised those in the governor’s inner circle. “Politics is not play,” Wike said. “If he has done something to be impeached, let them impeach him. It’s not a criminal offence.” This comes after the Rivers Assembly led by the Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, gave Fubara a 48-hour ultimatum to represent the 2025 budget. Amaewhule’s ultimatum came after the Supreme Court, in a judgement delivered by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim, ordered the 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to resume functions immediately. Meanwhile, Wike said that for peace to return in the state, the governor must do the right thing. According to him, Fubara must represent the 2025 budget to the State Assembly led by Martin Amaewhule, and also resubmit the names of his commissioners for clearance. He said that there is no way Fubara will have peace without doing the right thing. “What is peace? What is important is, let the right thing be done. When the right things are done, there will be peace. “But if the right thing is not done, how would you say you want peace? Peace is predicated on doing the right thing. “Go and re-present the budget, go and submit the list of the commissioners. You cannot do illegality,” Wike said. Speaking with journalists in Abuja, Wike narrated how he picked Governor Siminalayi Fubara for the position despite some politicians of Ijaw extraction kicking against the decision. He also said that Ijaws are minority in Rivers State and the Niger Delta, and stand no chance of becoming governors in any other state in the region apart from Bayelsa.

SDP NATIONAL SECRETARY, OLU AGUNLOYE, PETITIONS IGP OVER ‘PLOT’ TO REMOVE HIM

SDP NATIONAL SECRETARY, OLU AGUNLOYE , PETITIONS IGP OVER ‘PLOT’ TO REMOVE HIM Olu Agunloye, the national secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has petitioned Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police, over an alleged plot to force him to resign, TheCable can report. Sources told TheCable that members of the SDP loyal to Nasir el-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna state who just joined the party, are pushing for Agunloye’s resignation. Agunloye confirmed filing the petition when contacted by TheCable on Tuesday. “I petitioned the IG about a person who forged letterhead paper and is threatening me to resign,” Agunloye said. On Monday, el-Rufai resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the SDP after months of strategic meetings with opposition party leaders. El-Rufai, who served as governor of Kaduna state from 2015 to 2023, has been critical of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, particularly since the senate declined to confirm him as minister. In February, el-Rufai said Nigerians should not believe the narrative that the national assembly rejected him as a ministerial nominee, noting that Tinubu did not want him in his cabinet. In a statement announcing his resignation from the APC, el-Rufai said he would work to unite opposition leaders against the APC. “Without prejudice to this decision, as a member of the SDP, I will focus on engaging with and persuading other opposition leaders and parties to join us and congregate under a unified democratic platform to challenge the APC in all elections and bye-elections between now and 2027 by the Grace of God,” he said. “I, therefore, call on all our supporters and other persons concerned about our country’s future to join us in the SDP in the journey towards making Nigeria flourish as a beacon of pride for Africans and the Black Race.” On Tuesday, Adewole Adebayo, the SDP presidential candidate in the 2023 election, celebrated el-Rufai’s defection to the party, describing the former Kaduna governor as an “asset with a verifiable and measurable track record of public performance”.
