I WON’T STEP DOWN FOR TRUMP – POWELL, CHAIR FEDERAL RESERVE

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell had a clear, direct response when asked during a press conference Thursday if he would step down if asked to do so by President-elect Trump.

“No,” said Powell, whose term as chair ends in 2026

When asked to elaborate and if he would be legally required to leave, he again said, “No.”

Powell later said it is “not permitted under the law” for the president to fire or demote him or any of the other Fed governors with leadership positions.

Trump appointed Powell during his first term in 2017 but repeatedly and publicly criticized the Fed and its chair for not cutting rates fast enough throughout his tenure.

Powell also said in 2019 that he would not resign if asked by Trump. President Biden reappointed Powell in 2021 despite objections from progressives who have criticized the chair saying he has burdened the average American by keeping rates too high for too long.

Trump suggested earlier this year that Powell, a lifelong Republican, was “political” and would cut rates ahead of the 2024 election to help Democrats. While the Fed did cut rates in September by a whopping 50 basis points, Trump handily defeated Vice President Harris this week.

The Fed is a politically independent agency and closely guards its reputation. But in August, Trump suggested he should “have at least a say” in monetary policy, including interest rates, because he has “made a lot of money.”

Trump later walked back his comments during an interview with Bloomberg.

“I think it’s fine for a president to talk,” he said. “It doesn’t mean that they have to listen.”

“A president certainly can be talking about interest rates, because I think I have very good instincts,” he said. “That doesn’t mean I’m calling the shot, but it does mean that I should have a right to be able to talk about it like anybody else.”

Trump also said over the summer that he would let Powell serve out his term, “especially if I thought he was doing the right thing,” but that he would not reappoint him for another term.

TRUMP FIRES FOUR SENIOR OFFICIALS ON FIRST DAY IN OFFICE, THREATENS TO FIRE MORE PEOPLE In a sweeping move on his first full day in office, United States President, Donald Trump, has fired four senior government officials appointed by his predecessor and warned that “over a thousand more” could soon face dismissal. Trump announced the firings early Tuesday in his first post on Truth Social since taking the oath of office, signalling a rapid shake-up of government personnel. “My Presidential Personnel Office is actively in the process of identifying and removing over a thousand Presidential Appointees from the previous Administration, who are not aligned with our vision to Make America Great Again,” Trump wrote on the platform. He specifically named four officials who were immediately dismissed, Jose Andres, from the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, Mark Milley, from the National Infrastructure Advisory Council, Brian Hook, from the Wilson Center for Scholars, and Keisha Lance Bottoms, from the President’s Export Council. “Let this serve as Official Notice of Dismissal for these 4 individuals, with many more coming soon,” Trump declared in his post, which ended with his signature phrase: “YOU’RE FIRED!”—a line he made famous on his reality TV show ‘The Apprentice’. The decision marked the first step in what is expected to be a dramatic overhaul of government personnel as Trump moved swiftly to remove officials he perceived as obstacles to his agenda. Many US government institutions prepared for further upheaval, with fears that Trump may follow through on his campaign promises to slash the civil service, restructure key agencies, and even shutter entire departments in the name of efficiency. Trump’s latest actions mirrored his first term in office when he frequently clashed with career officials and dismissed individuals he believed were working against his administration’s policies.

PRESIDENCY SLAMS KEMI BADENOCH OVER NEGATIVE COMMENTS AGAINST NIGERIA

PRESIDENCY SLAMS KEMI BADENOCH OVER NEGATIVE COMMENTS AGAINST NIGERIA Nigerian Presidency has slammed the leader of the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch for her continued onslaught against Nigeria. Badenoch while delivering her first message for the year said Nigeria is a poor country that ruins lives of her citizens. Citing the quality of life lived by her parents alongside her siblings while in Nigeria, Badenoch said her family became poor by merely living in the country. However, reacting to the onslaught by the UK Conservative Party leader, Daniel Bwala, the spokesperson to the president on information and strategy said Badenoch’s constant derogatory comments against Nigeria would not affect the country. Bwala while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily said Badenoch is only demarketing Nigeria so that she can win the acceptance of the rights of her party. He said, “The only problem we have with Kemi, I think, is the rhetoric because Kemi belongs to the right base in the United Kingdom which is what you see in this populism around the world that you can deepen on your support system if you can feed off of the anger of the people. “And so she’s building a rhetoric of denigrating Nigeria, demarketing in Nigeria, so she can probably win the acceptance or acceptation of the rights in her part,” Bwala said. Further comparing Badenoch’s line of politics with her predecessor, Rishi Sunak, Bwala said her action is counterproductive. “And that to me is counterproductive because if you look at Rishi Sunak, he is also of Indian origin. There has been this issue of gang rape in India. “He has never used that as a weapon to promote what he believed to be a departure from what is likely to be believed as hereditary or history of the Indian people, but she has always denigrated Nigeria,” he added.
