ADAMAWA IMPOSES N40,000 TAX ON WORKERS AFTER ANNOUNCING N70,000 MINIMUM WAGE
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the new tax regime imposed on civil servants by the Adamawa State government.
Tax deductions on salaries for the month of October reportedly went astronomical, with some workers losing as much as N40,000 from the new national minimum wage, according to NLC.
This was disclosed by the deputy president of NLC, Audu Titus Amba, in Yola, the Adamawa State capital on Wednesday.
Amba, who is also the National President of Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) urged the Adamawa State governor, Ahamadu Umaru Fintiri to review the tax hike immediately.
The labour leader noted with dismay that the action of the government amounted to “giving our workers new minimum wage with your right hand and taking it off with your left hand.”
He added, “We’ve heard it all yesterday that the minimum wage that was paid was over-taxed. Someone was telling me that his tax was over N40,000, someone said his tax was N12,000; so it’s as good as giving with your right hand and taking it off with your left hand.”
“So we’re appealing, Your Excellency, you have to look into the issue of taxation,” he noted.
He also sought to know why those providing education at the basic level were neglected in the implementation of the new national minimum wage in Adamawa State.
“But let me say it clearly, I was a little bit worried when I got an information that this minimum wage that has been implemented here in Adamawa State, local government and primary school teachers are yet to benefit after about two to three months of implementation,” Amba added.
Meanwhile, NUT president was in Yola to supervise NUT election for new Adamawa State officials where Faisal Abubakar Mohammed, emerged as the chairman.
