TOUGH TIMES AHEAD AS NEW REPORT INDICATES THAT NIGERIA’S ECONOMY WILL UNDER PERFORM NEXT YEAR

A recent report by BMI, a Fitch Solutions company, forecasts Nigeria’s economic growth will reach 3.5% in 2025.

However, weak Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and low oil output are expected to continue hindering performance.

According to the report, there will be a substantial decline in oil production due to underinvestment and challenges like oil theft.

Despite positive reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, concerns about the business environment remain. Inflation is projected to average 20.2% next year, impacting domestic demand.

Part of the report read: “Turning to 2025, we forecast that economic growth will accelerate to 3.5 per cent. Inflation will remain on a downward trend next year, averaging 20.2 per cent, thanks to statistical base effects and more stability in the foreign exchange market.

“Indeed, greater monetary orthodoxy by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and lower dollar demand to finance petrol imports will limit exchange rate weakness next year.

“Accordingly, we anticipate that the CBN will launch a monetary easing cycle to stimulate credit demand and boost economic activity. Given these dynamics, we think that consumer purchasing power will strengthen and business confidence will improve, boosting activity in the non-oil sector.

“Overall, we project that total domestic demand will flip from a contraction of 0.2 per cent in 2024 to growth of 3.1 per cent in 2025, adding 2.4pp to real GDP growth.”

“Net exports will continue to support economic growth next year. Our oil & gas team anticipates that the Dangote refinery will increase its output further, which will transform Nigeria from a net fuel importer to a net fuel exporter in 2025.

“However, as domestic demand improves, the need for foreign consumer goods, imported raw materials, and capital inputs will gradually rise. Taking these dynamics into account, we project that while net exports will remain a positive factor for the economy, they will contribute a modest 1.1pp to the overall economic growth.

“The Nigerian economy will continue to underperform next year, despite the uptick in growth. While the reforms enacted by the Tinubu administration are positively influencing market sentiment, concerns about Nigeria’s long-term business environment will persist.

“Despite a 219.7 per cent y-o-y rise in capital inflows in Q1’24, foreign direct investment remains low, pointing to international companies’ reluctance to invest in tangible assets.”

TINUBU’S TAX REFORM BILL DEAD ON ARRIVAL – NDUME Senator Ali Ndume has said the tax reform bill of President Bola Tinubu administrarion is dead on arrival. Ndume stated this during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Tuesday. He said that Northern leaders were totally against the bill because because it was against the north. Ndume added that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was supposed to reform governance not impose another tax on Nigerians. He urged the president to listen to the advice of the Northern Governors’ Forum and immediately withdraw the bills. Ndume said, “Our people are saying they don’t want the VAT bill, they don’t even want to hear about it. That is why we are going to make it dead on arrival. President Tinubu should heed the advice of the National Economic Council (NEC) and the Northern Governors’ Forum and withdraw the bills immediately. “Nigerians are willing to pay taxes but only when they can afford it. Right now, people are struggling to survive. Let people live first before you start asking them for taxes.” Ndume said it would be fair to shut the bill down, hinting that he had started rallying support among colleagues to reject the bills. “What he needs to do is to withdraw the bill. Then go back to our people, educate and make us understand. We are representing the people, and they have already made their stance clear. “The governors and traditional rulers have said that the bill is not good. So, the best course of action is to withdraw it immediately,” he added.

OGUN PENSIONERS THANK FOR N20,000 WAGE INCREASE

OGUN PENSIONERS THANK GOVERNOR FOR N20,000 WAGE INCREASE The Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Ogun State branch, on Tuesday, commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for the wage increase extended to all categories of its members in the state. The union, in a letter titled “New Wage Increase to Ogun Pensioners: Expression of Gratitude,” signed by the State Chairman, Comrade Waidi Oloyede; Secretary, Comrade Bola Lawal, and the Treasurer, Comrade O. Ogabi, expressed their gratitude to the governor for his kindness and consideration towards the state retirees at all times. It noted that the state government started paying the N20,000 wage increase from October 2024. According to the union, such a wage increase for pensioners was last realised 16 years ago, adding that since then, no visible increase had been made to cut across all emolument strata. “Your Excellency, we cannot but recognise the many lofty gestures accorded to us by your amazing administration. “These include prompt and regular payment of monthly pensions, steady release of accrued gratuities, and the financial gestures to cushion the effects of the removal of the fuel subsidy, among others. “The executive and the entire body of Ogun State pensioners immensely appreciate your sincerity of purpose, your love, friendliness, and godliness towards us, the elderly. Thank you so much, sir,” the letter further stated. The union, however, pleaded with the governor to look into the consequential review of pensions for long-standing retirees, in line with the Federal Government Circular on Consequential Adjustment of Pensions for those who retired before the commencement of the Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2019.
