FULANI KWAJAFA, FORMER NDLEA BOSS WHO CREATED SARS, DIES AT 88

Fulani Kwajafa, the former Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and retired police commissioner, has passed away at 88.

The news was confirmed by his son, Nuhu Fulani Kwajafa, who serves as the Director General of the Global Initiative for Peace, Love and Care (GIPLC).

In an Instagram post Nuhu wrote, “This morning, my beloved father passed away at the age of 88. I thank God for his life and his contributions to our great country, Nigeria. We will deeply miss you, dad… Rest In Peace, Fulani Kwajafa OFR.”

Kwajafa, known for his role in establishing the now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), began his career as a constable in the Nigeria Police Force in 1954, rising to the rank of police commissioner by 1984. He was appointed NDLEA Chairman and CEO in 1991.

In a 2020 interview with BBC Hausa, Kwajafa expressed disappointment over how SARS had deviated from its original purpose.

“This is not why we created SARS,” he said, reflecting on the directive he received from then Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, to address escalating crime rates.

“Mr Inyang called me and told me to come up with a plan to save the country from thieves,” Kwajafa explained.

The unit’s initial mandate was to combat robbery, but over time, it became infamous for human rights abuses, leading to nationwide protests.

Reflecting on the unintended consequences, Kwajafa admitted, “When I am mentioned as the creator of SARS, I feel ashamed. It’s a thing of regret for me. If I had known it would be like this, I wouldn’t have created it.”

TINUBU’S TAX REFORM BILL DEAD ON ARRIVAL – NDUME Senator Ali Ndume has said the tax reform bill of President Bola Tinubu administrarion is dead on arrival. Ndume stated this during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Tuesday. He said that Northern leaders were totally against the bill because because it was against the north. Ndume added that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was supposed to reform governance not impose another tax on Nigerians. He urged the president to listen to the advice of the Northern Governors’ Forum and immediately withdraw the bills. Ndume said, “Our people are saying they don’t want the VAT bill, they don’t even want to hear about it. That is why we are going to make it dead on arrival. President Tinubu should heed the advice of the National Economic Council (NEC) and the Northern Governors’ Forum and withdraw the bills immediately. “Nigerians are willing to pay taxes but only when they can afford it. Right now, people are struggling to survive. Let people live first before you start asking them for taxes.” Ndume said it would be fair to shut the bill down, hinting that he had started rallying support among colleagues to reject the bills. “What he needs to do is to withdraw the bill. Then go back to our people, educate and make us understand. We are representing the people, and they have already made their stance clear. “The governors and traditional rulers have said that the bill is not good. So, the best course of action is to withdraw it immediately,” he added.

OGUN PENSIONERS THANK FOR N20,000 WAGE INCREASE

OGUN PENSIONERS THANK GOVERNOR FOR N20,000 WAGE INCREASE The Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Ogun State branch, on Tuesday, commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for the wage increase extended to all categories of its members in the state. The union, in a letter titled “New Wage Increase to Ogun Pensioners: Expression of Gratitude,” signed by the State Chairman, Comrade Waidi Oloyede; Secretary, Comrade Bola Lawal, and the Treasurer, Comrade O. Ogabi, expressed their gratitude to the governor for his kindness and consideration towards the state retirees at all times. It noted that the state government started paying the N20,000 wage increase from October 2024. According to the union, such a wage increase for pensioners was last realised 16 years ago, adding that since then, no visible increase had been made to cut across all emolument strata. “Your Excellency, we cannot but recognise the many lofty gestures accorded to us by your amazing administration. “These include prompt and regular payment of monthly pensions, steady release of accrued gratuities, and the financial gestures to cushion the effects of the removal of the fuel subsidy, among others. “The executive and the entire body of Ogun State pensioners immensely appreciate your sincerity of purpose, your love, friendliness, and godliness towards us, the elderly. Thank you so much, sir,” the letter further stated. The union, however, pleaded with the governor to look into the consequential review of pensions for long-standing retirees, in line with the Federal Government Circular on Consequential Adjustment of Pensions for those who retired before the commencement of the Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2019.
