SOLVING NIGERIA’S POWER CRISIS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE – PETER OBI

Presidential Candidate of Labour Party (LP) in 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has said the continued power outages in many parts of the country, particularly in the northern and eastern states, as well as south-south states, is a cause of grievous concern.

In a series on tweets on his X handle, on Sunday, he said it is heartbreaking to see that the affected states, majorly in the North, have been facing a total blackout.

The ongoing blackout, which has lasted over four days, initially stemmed from vandalism of the Shiroro-Mando transmission line, which provided bulk electricity to the northern states.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has said the situation will persist due to security challenges hindering repairs on critical transmission lines.

To mitigate the impact, the TCN said it diverted electricity through the Ugwuaji-Apir 330-kilovolt (kV) double-circuit transmission line.

However, a tripping incident on this alternative line further worsened the situation.

Speaking on the development, Obi said the negative impact of the continued power outage on businesses is unimaginable.

“This power crisis, when combined with the present high cost of petroleum products and a harsh operating environment, remains a lethal recipe for widespread business failure and increasing poverty in the country.”

“I have consistently maintained that solving Nigeria’s power and energy crisis is not rocket science. Many of our comparable peer nations have demonstrated how possible it is to provide sustainable power for their citizens.

“Our African neighbour, Egypt, for example, invested aggressively in their power sector, which resulted in the establishment of a sustainable power infrastructure by way of many power stations.

“Today, Egypt has revolutionized power and energy production in the country, providing sustainable power to millions of small businesses, which account for over 90% of active enterprises in the country and contributes to over 80 percent of their GDP,” he said.

He urged the government to ramp up efforts and provide both immediate and long-term solutions to this seemingly perennial challenge.

TINUBU’S TAX REFORM BILL DEAD ON ARRIVAL – NDUME Senator Ali Ndume has said the tax reform bill of President Bola Tinubu administrarion is dead on arrival. Ndume stated this during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Tuesday. He said that Northern leaders were totally against the bill because because it was against the north. Ndume added that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was supposed to reform governance not impose another tax on Nigerians. He urged the president to listen to the advice of the Northern Governors’ Forum and immediately withdraw the bills. Ndume said, “Our people are saying they don’t want the VAT bill, they don’t even want to hear about it. That is why we are going to make it dead on arrival. President Tinubu should heed the advice of the National Economic Council (NEC) and the Northern Governors’ Forum and withdraw the bills immediately. “Nigerians are willing to pay taxes but only when they can afford it. Right now, people are struggling to survive. Let people live first before you start asking them for taxes.” Ndume said it would be fair to shut the bill down, hinting that he had started rallying support among colleagues to reject the bills. “What he needs to do is to withdraw the bill. Then go back to our people, educate and make us understand. We are representing the people, and they have already made their stance clear. “The governors and traditional rulers have said that the bill is not good. So, the best course of action is to withdraw it immediately,” he added.

OGUN PENSIONERS THANK FOR N20,000 WAGE INCREASE

OGUN PENSIONERS THANK GOVERNOR FOR N20,000 WAGE INCREASE The Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Ogun State branch, on Tuesday, commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for the wage increase extended to all categories of its members in the state. The union, in a letter titled “New Wage Increase to Ogun Pensioners: Expression of Gratitude,” signed by the State Chairman, Comrade Waidi Oloyede; Secretary, Comrade Bola Lawal, and the Treasurer, Comrade O. Ogabi, expressed their gratitude to the governor for his kindness and consideration towards the state retirees at all times. It noted that the state government started paying the N20,000 wage increase from October 2024. According to the union, such a wage increase for pensioners was last realised 16 years ago, adding that since then, no visible increase had been made to cut across all emolument strata. “Your Excellency, we cannot but recognise the many lofty gestures accorded to us by your amazing administration. “These include prompt and regular payment of monthly pensions, steady release of accrued gratuities, and the financial gestures to cushion the effects of the removal of the fuel subsidy, among others. “The executive and the entire body of Ogun State pensioners immensely appreciate your sincerity of purpose, your love, friendliness, and godliness towards us, the elderly. Thank you so much, sir,” the letter further stated. The union, however, pleaded with the governor to look into the consequential review of pensions for long-standing retirees, in line with the Federal Government Circular on Consequential Adjustment of Pensions for those who retired before the commencement of the Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2019.
