WIKE, ATIKU TRADE WORDS: NIGERIANS HAVE REJECTED YOU, GO BACK HOME – WIKE; YOUR COMMENTS STRING OF INANITIES, BASELESS RANTS – ATIKU

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Wike, has mocked former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his failure to be president of the country.

Wike took a dig at Atiku at a luncheon honouring loyal members of the Rivers State Assembly in Port Harcourt.

The development comes after Atiku ridiculed him over the recent local government elections in Rivers State, where the Action Peoples Party (APP) secured 22 out of 23 local government chairmanship posts.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, which is backed by Wike, backed out of the election.

In retaliation, Wike said on Saturday, “We never contested local government elections. Did we contest? Did we pick form? I hear Atiku Abubakar say, ‘Oh they have rejected me in Rivers State. Okay, assuming though not conceding, he had lost so many times, Nigerians have also rejected him.”

“If you say for an election we did not contest; never participated that shows Nigerians have rejected us, it is okay. You that contested and failed woefully, Nigerians have rejected you, therefore pack and go home.”

Reacting through his media adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku described Wike’s comments as “theatrical outbursts” and “baseless rants” driven by personal grievances.

He said that Wike’s actions were a lingering symptom of bitterness from his defeat at the 2022 party presidential primaries.

“Mr. Wike’s comments are nothing more than a string of inanities, lacking substance,” the statement said.

“If he truly believes Nigerians are content with the current state of affairs under the government he serves, it reveals a deeper truth: his priorities lie not with the people but with himself.”

The statement reads in full:

Wike and his T-Pain Collaborators playing politics with the suffering of Nigerians
*Atiku preoccupied with genuine issues affecting Nigerians

Our attention has been drawn to the recent remarks made by Mr. Nyesom Wike, which can only be described as another of his theatrical outbursts. Ordinarily, we would not respond, but we recognize that silence might be misinterpreted.

However, we remain calm, knowing that Nigerians are well acquainted with his antics, a lingering symptom of the bitterness he harbours from his defeat to the Wazirin Adamawa at the 2022 party presidential primaries.

Mr. Wike’s comments are nothing more than a string of inanities, lacking substance and driven by personal grievances. If he truly believes Nigerians are content with the current state of affairs under the government he serves, it reveals a deeper truth: his priorities lie not with the people but with himself. This self-absorption is evident in his preoccupation with domestic affairs in Rivers rather than his ministerial responsibilities.

While he may seek to divert attention with his baseless rants, we remain focused on the genuine issues affecting Nigerians. It is clear that Mr. Wike is more concerned with self-interest than addressing the real challenges faced by the nation. In contrast, our commitment remains unwavering, centred on the welfare and progress of the people.

Mr. Wike appears to delight in conjuring fantasies, indulging in his imagination, and paying for live TV coverage to launch tirades against whomever he pleases. However, we shall not descend into the gutters where he feels at home. Instead, we prefer to rise above, maintaining our dignity while others revel in the mud.

Wike’s comments came at a luncheon in honour of loyal members of the Rivers State Assembly in Port Harcourt, where he took a dig at Atiku’s failed presidential attempts.

This was in response to Atiku’s ridicule of Wike over the recent local government elections in Rivers State, where the Action Peoples Party (APP) secured 22 out of 23 local government chairmanship posts.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, which is backed by Wike, backed out of the election.

Sources told TheCable that members of the SDP loyal to Nasir el-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna state who just joined the party, are pushing for Agunloye’s resignation. Agunloye confirmed filing the petition when contacted by TheCable on Tuesday. “I petitioned the IG about a person who forged letterhead paper and is threatening me to resign,” Agunloye said. On Monday, el-Rufai resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the SDP after months of strategic meetings with opposition party leaders. El-Rufai, who served as governor of Kaduna state from 2015 to 2023, has been critical of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, particularly since the senate declined to confirm him as minister. In February, el-Rufai said Nigerians should not believe the narrative that the national assembly rejected him as a ministerial nominee, noting that Tinubu did not want him in his cabinet. In a statement announcing his resignation from the APC, el-Rufai said he would work to unite opposition leaders against the APC. “Without prejudice to this decision, as a member of the SDP, I will focus on engaging with and persuading other opposition leaders and parties to join us and congregate under a unified democratic platform to challenge the APC in all elections and bye-elections between now and 2027 by the Grace of God,” he said. “I, therefore, call on all our supporters and other persons concerned about our country’s future to join us in the SDP in the journey towards making Nigeria flourish as a beacon of pride for Africans and the Black Race.” On Tuesday, Adewole Adebayo, the SDP presidential candidate in the 2023 election, celebrated el-Rufai’s defection to the party, describing the former Kaduna governor as an “asset with a verifiable and measurable track record of public performance”.
