JONATHAN CAUTIONS JUDICIARY, POLICE OVER ROLES IN RIVERS CRISIS
Former president, Goodluck Jonathan has cautioned the Judiciary and the Police over their roles in the crisis in Rivers State, warning that the political crisis may collapse Nigeria like the collapse of the Old Western Region.

Jonathan stated this on Saturday in a statement he signed saying the unfolding political crisis is a source of concern.

Jonathan said he’s “aware that the local government election that took place in Rivers State on October 5, has been a subject of great interest to political actors.”

He stated that the political happenings in Rivers State in the past days are a “cause for serious concern for everyone, especially lovers of democracy and all actors within the peace and security sector of our nation.”

Elections, he said, are the cornerstone of democracy because they are the primary source of legitimacy.

“This process renews the faith of citizens in their country as it allows them to have a say on who governs them.”

The former president said every election is significant, whether at national or subnational levels as it counts as a gain and honour to democracy.

He stressed that it is the responsibility of all stakeholders, especially state institutions, to work towards the promotion of a sound democratic culture of which periodic election stands as a noble virtue.

He emphasised that “democracy is our collective asset, its growth and progress is dependent on governments commitment to uphold the rule of law and pursue the interest of peace and justice at all times.

“Institutions of the state, especially security agencies must refrain from actions that could lead to breakdown of law and order.”

There’s heightened anxiety and fear over the conduct of the LG elections which are underway following warning and opposition from the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and his associates who control the Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The state governor, Sim Fubara vowed to hold the election even though the PDP, of which he is a member, and the All Progressives Congress are not participating.

A video of the election in one of the polling units sent to THE WHISTLER showed men in police uniforms storming a unit and carting away election materials.

They dispersed voters and election officials after shooting in the air.

The political struggles between Fubara and Wike have sent fears that there could be a breakdown of law and order which could impact Nigeria’s revenue, as Rivers is one the major producers of crude oil.

Jonathan emphasised that Rivers State represents the gateway to the Niger Delta and a threat to peace in the state could have huge security implications in the region.

“Let me sound a note of caution to all political actors in this crisis to be circumspect and patriotic in the pursuit of their political ambition and relevance,” Jonathan warned.

He also “called on the National Judicial Commission (NJC) to take action that will curb the proliferation of court orders and judgements, especially those of concurrent jurisdiction giving conflicting orders. This, if not checked, will ridicule the institution of the judiciary and derail our democracy.

“The political situation in Rivers State, mirrors our past, the crisis of the Old Western Region. I, therefore, warn that Rivers should not be used as crystals that will form the block that will collapse our democracy.

“State institutions especially the police and the judiciary and all other stakeholders must always work for public interest and promote common good such as peace, justice and equality,” Jonathan said.

MY N14M MONTHLY EARNING NOT ENOUGH – SENATOR ORJI UZOR KALU Former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, has said that he earns 14 million monthly as a senator, but the money is not enough to take care of his overhead and other costs. Kalu, who represents Abia North Senatorial District, stated this during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Thursday. He said that the money was not enough to cover his expenses. Kalu argued that most senators were doing well for their constituents, saying he would never fail his people. “I am doing my best as a legislator for my constituency. I will never fail in my duty and I am sure most senators are doing their duties in their constituencies. I can never fail in Abia North Senatorial District. “I earn N14 million in a month encompassing my salary, overhead and workers’ salaries. Let me be honest with you, do you know from this money I have to buy fuel to travel to my constituency? It’s not enough. “When I was a governor, I voted for one term of six years. Remember Obasanjo said I was after him. That was the beginning of our quarrel. I went for one term of six years because of the cost of election, because of the cost of managing the economy. As a governor or a president, their eyes are on re-election. They are not even thinking about what people will gain, what people will do. They are only looking for reelection. The only way to solve this problem is to do a six-year one term. “It will go a long way in boosting their performance because the people think they need to make money for re-election in my opinion.”

YOUR REFORMS NOT WORKING – BAUCHI GOVERNOR TELLS TINUBU Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed has called on the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to review its current monetary and fiscal policies, stating that they are not working effectively. The governor made this call at the launch of the Nigeria Development Update in Abuja on Thursday. Mohammed urged the government to avoid being dogmatic in its approach, emphasizing the urgent need for change due to the growing hardship in the country. He highlighted the plight of ordinary Nigerians, warning that hunger and economic hardship have created a volatile situation. He revealed that even people in his position are facing the threat of being lynched by frustrated citizens. Mohammed also called on the federal government to develop more effective economic policies, stressing that the funds currently being received are insufficient to address the widespread hunger. “When the reforms started, the sub-nationals supported the President. But now, the macroeconomic policies causing inflation need to be reconsidered. There is hunger, people are suffering, and Nigerians are not benefitting from these reforms. “What are you doing to reduce hunger? We must help the people cope. “The purchasing power of the people has drastically diminished. “My brother Cardoso (CBN governor), these policies are not working. They need to be reviewed. Let’s not resort to blackmail,” the governor said.
