IPAC LAUDS CONDUCT OF ENUGU COUNCIL ELECTION

The Inter-party Advisory Council (IPAC) of Enugu State has lauded the conduct of the Local Government Council Elections held on Saturday, describing the exercise as free, fair, credible, and peaceful.

IPAC also lauded the impressive voter turnout.

In a preliminary statement released by State Chairman Obioma Nnamani and State Secretary Dr. Afam Ani in Enugu on Sunday, the council commended the lack of political interference during the election, urging both winners and losers to collaborate for the advancement of Enugu State.

“In line with our mission to promote peaceful, free, fair, and transparent elections in accordance with the law, IPAC deployed observers across the 17 local government areas to monitor the conduct of the September 21, 2024 local government election in Enugu State.

“IPAC’s preliminary report indicates no incidents of electoral violence; the exercise was remarkably peaceful. This is a significant achievement for our electoral process, and we commend the leaders, stakeholders, and security agencies for their efforts.

“Crucially, there was substantial adherence to legal provisions by the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) during the elections.

“However, IPAC did observe delays in the arrival of election materials in certain areas, attributed in part to heavy rain in the early morning hours.

“Additionally, some isolated infractions have been reported by our observers, which we are currently investigating.

“Nonetheless, the overall exercise was overwhelmingly transparent, free, fair, and credible.

“We encourage both winners and losers to work together for the development and good governance of Enugu State while urging any party or candidate who feels aggrieved to seek resolutions through the rule of law,” the statement noted.

IPAC also called for ongoing political education to empower citizens to hold their newly elected leaders accountable.

“While elections are a vital component of democracy, providing the public with the opportunity to exercise their fundamental right to choose their leaders, they are not an end in themselves.

“Thus, we urge civil society and political parties to enhance political education and awareness to ensure that elected leaders, including those from Saturday’s council elections, deliver on the promises of democracy and are held accountable in doing so,” IPAC concluded.

DON’T REPEAT 2015 MISTAKE – GALADIMA, RULES OUT NNPP, PDP, LP MERGER A prominent stakeholder in the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Buba Galadima, has dismissed speculations of a possible merger between opposition parties, insisting that only individuals, not political parties, can come together to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaking on the current political realignments, Galadima ruled out any coalition between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and NNPP ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to him, both the PDP and LP have been compromised and are no longer viable opposition forces. “You should know that PDP is not merging with anybody because PDP is a branch of APC. Nobody needs to tell you that. The Labour Party has been taken over. So, only individuals can merge, I mean, can come together and go under one umbrella,” Galadima stated. His remarks came on the heels of the defection of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, from APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), a move widely seen as part of efforts to build a strong opposition coalition ahead of 2027. However, Galadima cautioned against a repeat of the 2015 political alignment that led to the emergence of Muhammadu Buhari and later, Bola Tinubu, as presidents. “But you should also know that it is not good for us to commit the mistakes of 2014 or 2013, just to remove Tinubu for removal’s sake, because you may remove Tinubu as you removed Buhari, and end up using torchlight during daylight looking for Tinubu,” he warned.

EL-RUFAI’S DEFECTION MORE BIGWIGS TO LEAVE APC

EL-RUFAI’S DEFECTION: MORE BIGWIGS TO LEAVE APC There are indications that more high-profile politicians have concluded plans to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) following former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s defection from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The National Chairman of the SDP, Shehu Musa Gabam, gave this hint in a chat, while reacting to El-Rufai’s defection. Gabam stated that El-Rufai’s move had triggered a wave of defections from Kaduna State, with more prominent figures from the ruling APC and other parties, as well as across backgrounds expected to follow suit. While declining to reveal specific names, sources within the party suggest that former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola might also defect to the SDP. Seyi Tinubu intensifies Ramadan visits to statesRivers lawmaker dismisses Fubara’s invitation El-Rufai had visited Aregbesola and a prominent cleric, Pastor Tunde Bakare, in Lagos on Sunday. He had also met with former President Muhammadu Buhari and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar in recent days. These meetings have fuelled speculations that El-Rufai’s defection marks the beginning of broader political realignments. However, Fayemi, in a statement yesterday, dismissed reports of his planned defection. “My attention has been drawn to a story circulating on several online platforms regarding my defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC). As I have had cause to state in the past, I am a card-carrying foundation member of the APC, and this position has not changed,” he said. He added, “While I have been at the vanguard of the demand for greater internal democracy and inclusion in the ruling party, I believe it is still not late for our party to change course and move towards greater inclusion and internal democracy.” Meanwhile, Gabam reiterated that the ongoing defections to the SDP are part of a broader political shift aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring governance benefits reach the people. Political observers have linked El-Rufai’s move to presidential ambitions, but Gabam insisted the SDP’s structure prioritises grassroots participation. “The party’s philosophy is entrenched in grassroots democratic participation and aligns with the politics of endorsement. Every potential aspirant must go through the process from the grassroots level to prevent imposition,” he said. He also dismissed suggestions of a merger with other parties, stating, “The SDP is not in alignment with the proponents of a merger of political parties. It is a recipe for chaos.” Why I left APC for SDP – El-Rufai Announcing his resignation from the APC in a statement on Monday titled “Onwards to the Future”, El-Rufai accused the party leadership of failing to address internal challenges. “As a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), I have fond memories of working with other compatriots to negotiate the merger of political parties that created the APC. It had been my hope since 2013 that my personal values and those of the APC will align up to the time I choose to retire from politics. “Developments in the last two years confirm that there is no desire on the part of those who currently control and run the APC to acknowledge, much less address, the unhealthy situation of the party,” he said. He continued: “On my part, I have raised concerns in private and, more recently, in public regarding the capricious trajectory of the party. Therefore, at this point in my political journey, I have come to the conclusion that I must seek another political platform for the pursuit of the progressive values I cherish. “Founders rightly feel attached towards institutions they helped create, but one must be pragmatic enough to admit when a divergence appears unbridgeable. “I have diligently served the APC and made my contributions to its viability as a political platform but recognise that…
