ENDBADGOVERNANCE: FG CHARGES ARRESTED PROTESTERS TO COURT

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja, on Wednesday, issued a ruling granting bail to ten #EndBadGovernance protesters who had been detained on charges including treason.
Each defendant was granted bail set at ₦10 million, along with the requirement of one surety in the same amount.

In his ruling, Justice Nwite emphasized the principle of presumption of innocence, asserting that anyone charged with a criminal offense is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

He acknowledged the arguments presented by the defense counsel, particularly Abubakar Marshall, representing the 1st, 2nd, and 4th defendants.

Despite the serious nature of the charges, Justice Nwite decided to grant bail to all ten defendants, stating, “I have carefully considered the submission of the counsel on both divides. I hereby grant the defendants bail notwithstanding the crime.

“The bail is hereby granted to the defendants applicant in the sum of ₦10 million each and one surety in like some.”

Justice Nwite approved their bail applications, stipulating that each defendant must secure a surety who is both a property owner and resident in Abuja.

These sureties are required to provide property documents and an affidavit of means to the court. Additionally, both defendants and sureties must submit their international passports and three recent passport-sized photographs.

Justice Nwite overruled the Inspector General of Police’s objections to the bail requests and imposed a restriction prohibiting the defendants from participating in any public demonstrations during their trial.

Until bail conditions are met, the defendants will remain in custody, while their trial is scheduled to begin on September 27.

The protesters are accused of treasonous activities during their nationwide protests, including attempting to incite a military takeover of President Tinubu’s government, vandalizing public property, and attacking police officers.

The charges against them fall under sections 96, 410, and 413 of the Penal Code. The Inspector General of Police alleges that the group broke into the Abacha Army Barracks, called for military intervention, and committed acts of violence including the destruction of a police station and other public facilities.

The accused are Michael Tobiloba Adaramoye, Adeyemi Abiodun Abayomi, Suleiman Yakubu, Opaluwa Eleojo Simon, Angel Love Innocent, Buhari Lawal, Mosiu Sadiq, Bashir Bello Nurudeen Khamis, and Abduldalam Zubair.

$225M DEBT: FIRST BANK SPEAKS ON LEGAL TUSSLE WITH OBAIGBENA’S GHL The management of First Bank of Nigeria Limited on Tuesday said media reports alleging that it abused court processes in the ongoing legal battles with General Hydrocarbons Limited are misleading and incorrect. The bank said it performed its obligations under the loan agreements but trouble started when it demanded for good governance and transparency in the transaction, which GHL rejected. “Consequently, it is incorrect to assert that FirstBank abused the process of the court,” the bank said in a statement. PREMIUM TIMES reported how the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, granted an order restraining all commercial banks in Nigeria from releasing or dealing in all monies and assets up to $225.8 million due to Nduka Obaigbena from any account maintained by him. Nduka ObaigbenaNduka ObaigbenaMr Obaigbena is the chairman and editor-in-chief of THISDAY Media Group and Arise News Channel. The court also blocked all commercial banks from releasing or dealing in all monies and assets up to the said amount belonging to Efe Damilola Obaigbena, Olabisi Eka Obaigbena and General Hydrocarbons Limited, an oil and gas firm in which all the three are directors and shareholders. Another order barring the banks from dealing in or releasing such monies and assets due to the company, its agents, privies, subsidiaries and sister companies with the banks up to the same sum was issued, according to court documents obtained by PREMIUM TIMES. General Hydrocarbons, in its response, said it also obtained a court order securing its operations. “We are in court and arbitration to resolve our differences and have obtained a court order securing our operations pending determination,” the company said in a statement signed by its chairman, Nduka Obaigbena. Public Statement by First Bank of Nigeria Limited Our attention has been drawn to recent media reports regarding a commercial transaction between First Bank of Nigeria Limited (FirstBank) and General Hydrocarbons Limited (GHL) that is currently a subject of litigation. As a responsible and law-abiding corporate citizen of Nigeria with utmost respect for the courts,FirstBank will not be able to offer comments on issues which are pending for determination by the courts, as such issues are sub-judice. However, we are constrained to issue the following clarifications to correct the sponsored but false narratives on the matter presented in some of the media publications. There is a subsisting commercial transaction between FirstBank as lender, and GHL as borrower, where FirstBank extended several credit facilities to GHL for the development of some Oil Mining Lease assets. There is a subsisting commercial transaction between FirstBank as lender, and GHL as borrower, where FirstBank extended several credit facilities to GHL for the development of some Oil Mining Lease assets. These facilities are backed by very robust loan agreements executed by the parties in which the obligations of the parties are clearly defined and the security arrangement clearly spelt out. While FirstBank has diligently performed its obligations under the loan agreements, at the root of the present dispute is FirstBank’s demand for good governance and transparency in the transaction, which GHL rejected. Upon FirstBank’s realization of breaches on the part of GHL including diversion of proceeds, FirstBank requested that an independent operator mutually acceptable to both parties be appointed in line with the terms of the agreement, to operate the financed asset in a transparent manner that will bring greater visibility to the project, protect the interest of, and bring value to all stakeholders. Not only did GHL roundly reject this reasonable and fair request, rather GHL insisted that FirstBank avails it with more funding. GHL refused to execute the terms of offer stipulated by the Bank for the availment of additional funding but rather proceeded to commence needless Arbitral…

JANUARY 1966: A MORNING OF MURDER, MAYHEM AND CARNAGE

JANUARY 15 1966: A MORNING OF MURDER, MAYHEM AND CARNAGEBy Femi Fani-Kayode In the early hours of the morning of January 15th 1966 a coup d’etat took place in Nigeria which resulted in the murder of a number of leading political figures and senior army officers. This was the first coup in the history of our country and 98 per cent of the officers that planned and led it were from a particular ethnic nationality in the country. According to Max Siollun, a notable and respected historian whose primary source of information was the formal Police report compiled by the Police’s Special Branch Department immediately after the failure of the coup, during the course of the investigation and after the mutineers had been arrested and detained, names of the leaders of the mutiny were as follows: Major Emmanuel Arinze Ifeajuna. Major Chukwuemeka Kaduna Nzeogwu. Major Chris Anuforo. Major Tim Onwutuegwu. Major Chudi-Sokei. Major Adewale Ademoyega. Major Don Okafor. Major John Obieno. Captain Ben Gbuli, Captain Emmanuel Nwobosi. Captain Chukwuka. and Lt. Oguchi. It is important to point out that I saw the Special Branch report myself and I can confirm Siollun’s findings. These were indeed the names of ALL the leaders of the January 15th 1966 mutiny and all other lists are FAKE. The names of those that they murdered in cold blood or abducted were as follows. Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, the Prime Minister of Nigeria (murdered). Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto and the Premier of the Old Northern Region (murdered). Sir Kashim Ibrahim, the Shettima of Borno and the Governor of the Old Northern Region (abducted). Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, the Aare Ana Kakanfo of Yorubaland and the Premier of the Old Western Region (murdered). Chief Remilekun Adetokunboh Fani-Kayode Q.C., the Balogun of Ife, the Deputy Premier of the Old Western Region and my beloved father (abducted). Chief Festus Samuel Okotie-Eboh, the Oguwa of the Itsekiris and the Minister of Finance of Nigeria (murdered). Brigadier Samuel Adesujo Ademulegun, Commander of the 1st Brigade, Nigerian Army (murdered). Brigadier Zakariya Maimalari, Commander of the 2nd Brigade, Nigerian Army (murdered). Colonel James Pam (murdered). Colonel Ralph Sodeinde (murdered). Colonel Arthur Unegbe (murdered). Colonel Kur Mohammed (murdered). Lt. Colonel Abogo Largema (murdered). Alhaja Hafsatu Bello, the wife of the Sardauna of Sokoto (murdered). Alhaji Zarumi, traditional bodyguard of the Sardauna of Sokoto (murdered). Mrs. Lateefat Ademulegun, the wife of Brigadier Ademulegun who was eight months pregnant at the time (murdered). Ahmed B. Musa (murdered). Ahmed Pategi (murdered). Sgt. Daramola Oyegoke (murdered). Police Constable Yohana Garkawa (murdered). Police Constable Musa Nimzo (murdered). Police Constable Akpan Anduka (murdered). Police Constable Hagai Lai (murdered). and Police Constable Philip Lewande (murdered). In order to reflect the callousness of the mutineers permit me to share under what circumstances some of their victims were murdered and abducted. Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was abducted from his home, beaten, mocked, tortured, forced to drink alcohol, humiliated and murdered after which his body was dumped in a bush along the Lagos-Abeokuta road. Sir Ahmadu Bello was killed in the sanctity of his own home with his wife Hafsatu and his loyal security assistant Zurumi. Zurumi drew his sword to defend his principal whilst Hafsatu threw her body over her dear husband in an attempt to protect him from the bullets. Chief S. L. Akintola was gunned down as he stepped out of his house in the presence of his family and Chief Festus Okotie-Eboh was beaten, brutalised, abducted from his home, maimed and murdered and his body was dumped in a bush. Brigadier Zakariya Maimalari had held a cocktail party in his home the evening before which was attended by some of the young officers that went back to his house early…
