POLICE IGNORED OUR PETITION ON AJAERO FOR OVER ONE YEAR BUT STARTED ACTING AFTER THE PETITION WAS WITHDRAWN – AIR PEACE

Air Peace has clarified its position regarding the recent arrest of Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), denying its alleged involvement in Ajaero’s arrest by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Ajaero was arrested on Monday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, by the DSS as he was en route to the United Kingdom for an official assignment.

In a statement by airline spokesperson Omotade Makinwa, Air Peace addressed media reports suggesting that Ajaero’s arrest was related to a petition filed by the airline.

The statement noted that such reports had unfairly tarnished the airline’s reputation.

Makinwa explained that the airline had filed a petition over a year ago concerning an incident on May 3, 2023, when the NLC disrupted Air Peace’s operations amid a broader conflict with the Imo State Government.

Although Air Peace was not involved in the dispute, the disruption led to significant financial losses and inconvenienced many travelers.

The statement continued, “Air Peace expresses concern over the recent media portrayal linking the NLC president’s arrest to a petition filed by the airline in September 2023.

“This situation does not accurately represent the current relationship between Air Peace and the NLC.

“It is important to clarify the events leading up to the petition. On May 3,, 2023, the NLC disrupted Air Peace operations as part of a broader conflict with the Imo State Government.

“Although Air Peace had no involvement in the dispute between the NLC and the Imo State Government, our airline was unfortunately used as a tool to exert pressure on the government. This unlawful disruption of our services caused significant financial losses and impacted the travel plans of many Nigerians across multiple states.

“In response to this disruption, Air Peace’s legal team submitted a formal petition against the NLC to the Nigerian Police. Despite our repeated efforts to follow up on the petition, the police failed to take prompt action.”

However, the airline added that “over a year later, the Nigerian Police have chosen to act on the original petition, which has now led to the alleged arrest of the NLC president.”

Makinwa said, “Before this arrest, the airline and the NLC had already reached an amicable resolution, and Air Peace had withdrawn its petition, allowing a positive working relationship to resume between the two organisations.”

NLC TO ENGAGE FG OVER PETROL PRICE HIKE The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) announced on Thursday that it will engage the federal government to discuss how workers can cope with the recent petrol price increases. NLC President Joe Ajaero asserted that the current petrol prices have undermined the benefits of the proposed N70,000 national minimum wage, which has yet to be implemented. At a workshop in Lagos focused on minimum wage strategies, Ajaero accused President Bola Tinubu of deceiving organized labor into accepting the wage hike under the premise of preventing further increases in fuel prices. He stressed the urgent need for the government to address the rising hunger and poverty among Nigerians, warning that the situation is becoming increasingly untenable. Ajaero revealed that during negotiations, President Tinubu allegedly suggested a wage increase to N250,000 in exchange for allowing petrol prices to rise. The NLC leader emphasized that such an increase would not effectively alleviate economic hardship, as escalating costs would negate any wage benefits. He expressed frustration over the government’s distraction tactics, which he believes have diverted attention from critical issues like the petrol price hikes. Ajaero reiterated claims of betrayal by the President, highlighting that labor representatives felt misled during wage discussions. The NLC plans to advocate for policies that prioritize the well-being of workers and address the economic challenges facing Nigerians, insisting that the government must take immediate action to restore confidence in its commitments to labor.

WHY WE DIDN’T ATTEND TO YAHAYA BELLO – EFCC

WHY WE DIDN’T ATTEND TO YAHAYA BELLO – EFCC The reason why the Economic and Financial Commission (EFCC) rejected the method by which Yahaya Bello reported to the commission. “Upon realising that Bello came with the governor and some dignitaries, the Executive Chairman directed that no official should attend to him. “His manner of coming to EFCC was a breach of our protocol. No Nigerian, no matter how highly placed, is expected to come for an invitation in a convoy of vehicles and with a sitting governor. “To the EFCC, he came with grandeur which is contrary to our procedures. “There are stages of documentation which Bello skipped because he was with the governor who has immunity. “The EFCC also did not invite the governor. So, what was the basis for accompanying Bello to our headquarters in Abuja? “We have not been comfortable with the roles of the governor in this case. “After fulfilling all procedures of documentation, Bello was expected to come with his lawyer(s) and not a governor or Politically Exposed Persons (PEPs). “We cannot be intimidated or subject our system to political pollution. “This made the Executive Chairman of EFCC to direct that no official should attend to Bello. He must undergo due process like every invitee. “The commission was unhappy with the pre-emptive propaganda in the media by Bello’s team which had created false impressions. “There was a narration that the ex-governor was already in EFCC’s custody.” A source told The Nation.
