EDO GUBER ELECTION: FIVE POLITICAL PARTIES BACK APC CANDIDATE

Ahead of the Edo State September 21 governorship election five political parties and their candidates on Saturday threw their weights behind the All Progressives Congress and its candidate Senator Monday Okpebholo.

The political parties which gave their support to Okpebholo are the National Rescue Movement, the Alliance Peoples Movement, the Zenith Labour Party, the Social Democratic Party and the Action Democratic Party.

They were received at the State Secretariat of the APC by Okpebholo, his running mate, Hon Dennis Idahosa; the Acting State Chairman of the party, Emperor Jarret Tenebe; the party’s Secretary, Lawrence Okah; the Director General of the Edo APC Governorship Campaign Council, Sen. Matthew Uroghide among others.

Speaking on behalf of the other candidates who took turns to endorse the APC candidate, Sam Arase of the NRM said, “Today is another beautiful day as Edo State marks 33 years of our existence. We have taken a serious decision as we approach the September 21 date for the governorship election in the state.

“We the Assemblies of Registered Political Parties in Edo State having watched carefully the campaign of the APC. We recognise the fact that Okpebholo wants to fix the bastardised educational system in the state.

“We, the National Rescue Movement, including our candidate, Dennis Osahon; the Alliance Peoples Movement candidate, Zenith Labour Party candidate, the Social Democratic Party candidate and the Action Democratic Party candidate have decided to work with the APC in the forthcoming election. Having discussions among ourselves, we have decided to vote en masse for the APC.”

He added that “What we want is the growth and development of this state. We want Edo to come back to its feet again. We want Edo people to know that they will elect a man who means well for them because of his antecedents which we are happy about.

“We are calling on all our supporters across the 19 local government areas to come out on September 21 to cast their votes for Okpbholoo and his running mate, Hon Dennis Idahosa.”

While commending the gesture, Okpebholo said he would run an all-inclusive government and ensure that he implements every item in his manifesto, promising to turn the state into a huge construction site.

He said, “I am not the only candidate that is contesting right now, there is something special about me that they have seen. They have seen the capacity in me, they have seen me as somebody who can actually move Edo State forward.

“I have all what it takes to move the state forward because I will develop education and provide good healthcare for our people. I am happy that you have come to support me. It is a big task and without being told, I believe that this state needs a unity government because we must all work together to make Edo State strong and viable.”

Tenebe said the APC would not take the generous support of the parties for granted and that is an indication that they share in the vision of the APC that the state needs to move forward.

The Edo APC Governorship Campaign Council, Sen. Matthew Uroghide, said their generous support for the party would be rewarded.

FIVE FAVOURITES WHO MAY REPLACE AJURI NGALARE AS TINUBU’S SPOKESMAN The resignation of Ajuri Ngelale as the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Publicity has sparked a flurry of speculations within the corridors of power regarding his potential successor.Ngelale stepped down, citing a “vexatious medical situation” in his family. However, reports from multiple sources suggest that hisxit was less voluntary, hinting at a dismissal following a series of pleas for a graceful exit. NoThe backdrop to Ngelale’s departure involves an alleged power struggle with Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, which reportedly affected Ngelale’s effectiveness and standing within the presidential villa. Despite Ngelale’s tumultuous exit, Onanuga has not been tipped as his successor, leaving the pivotal role unexpectedly open. According to FIJ, there are five favourites to replace Ngelale. DANIEL BWALA “Daniel Bwala, former spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar 2023 presidential election campaign, is one of at least four names that have been mentioned ‘in the room’,” a party source told FIJ on Tuesday. As spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential campaign organisation, Bwala was one of Tinubu’s fiercest critics until mid-2023 after the former Lagos governor’s emergence as president. His attempts to ingratiate himself with the president became publicly noticeable in January 2024 when he paid a visit to the president at the villa, and followed it up with another in France, within three weeks. He has since left the PDP and confirmed his commitment to the Tinubu administration. Previously in the APC, Bwala supported Tinubu during the ruling party’s presidential primary but left for the rival PDP in protest against APC’s Muslim/Muslim presidential ticket. SUNDAY DARE FIJ understands that Sunday Dare is one of the names being considered for the job. An accomplished journalist, he boasts extensive contacts at home and abroad respectively, having been part of the founding team of weekly magazines The News and Tempo, and having worked in the United States and embarked on mid-career journalism fellowships at prestigious institutions University of Oxford and Harvard University. “He may not be number one on the list but his chances are high,” said FIJ’s source. “He has been with Tinubu for decades and he also understands the villa; remember he was sports minister in the second half of Buhari’s tenure.” TUNDE RAHMAN As of Tuesday, Tunde Rahman, appointed by Tinubu in July 2023 as senior special assistant to the president on media affairs, leads the race for the vacant position. Rahman is arguably the candidate with the deepest contacts base in the Nigerian media, having worked in a number of newsrooms: the famed Daily Times Newspaper, Punch, and ThisDay, where he rose to become editor before founding The Western Post. “Rahman has been with the president for a very long time; he wants the job and will probably get it,” said FIJ’s source. “But there are also powerful forces who do not want him because of his eccentricity. But he is the favourite. If nothing changes, he will likely get the job.” ABDULAZIZ ABDULAZIZ Currently, the senior special assistant to the president on print media, AbdulAziz AbdulAziz made his name by writing the series of investigative reports that ousted Kemi Adeosun from office as finance minister in 2018 on account of her forged NYSC certificate, which also explains the public opprobrium that welcomed his appointment as SSA to a president with contestable identity and controversial academic records. But take nothing away from AbdulAziz’s journalistic accomplishments, which include notable awards at home and abroad. A former media aide to the then Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) chairman Nuhu Ribadu, who is now national security adviser, Abdulaziz was deputy general editor of Daily Trust before he was poached by Tinubu. “AbdulAziz wants the job,”…

ABURE THINKS HE’S STILL IN 1980, LIES SHAMELESSLY – AISHA YESUFU

ABURE THINKS HE’S STILL IN 1980, LIES SHAMELESSLY – AISHA YESUFU A social critic, Aisha Yesufu has criticised the erstwhile National Chairman of the Labour Party, LP, Mr Julius Abure for allegedly lying about the party funds. Aidsha in an X post said, ” he thinks one can lie shamelessly without being fact-checked”. The statement comes after Abure claimed that Yesufu and Pastor Itua Ighodalo were responsible for managing the party’s presidential candidate campaign funds in the 2023 general election. Abure made the claims amid rumours that he mismanaged the party’s funds, claiming that the party never had access to the accounts opened for donations to support Obi’s candidacy. He had insisted that Yesufu and Ighodalo were the only signatories to the accounts. “The party was never involved in the distribution of those resources. Our interest was to see how we could produce a president for the party. How it was done was not our concern. Hence, we gave them free rein. We allowed them to entrust their resources to whomever they wanted. We followed them loyally by allowing them to administer the campaign funds,” Abure said. However, Yesufu dug up Abure’s post on X in 2022, in which he asked people to take ownership of the party’s campaign by donating a minimum of N1,000 to the Labour Party account. Aisha blasted the embattled party chairman, saying, “Julius Abure thinks we are still in 1980 where one can lie shamelessly without being fact-checked,” Yesufu posted on X.
