IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW MINIMUM WAGE BEGINS AUGUST ENDING – ORGANIZED LABOUR

Organised Labour has announced that the implementation of the new N70,000 minimum wage is expected to begin by the end of August.

The Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Political Commission, Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, shared this update, explaining that the slight delay is due to the necessary processes, including the consequential adjustments that involve recalculating wages across all levels, from level one to level 16.

He assured that the delay is not a deliberate attempt by the Federal and State Governments to avoid implementing the new minimum wage.

Ndubuaku stated, “We have no reason to suspect any deliberate delay. Signing the wage bill is just a small part of the process. Consequential adjustment, which includes calculating the minimum wage from level one, step one, and moving up through the levels, is a detailed process that may take some time.

However, it is essential that we are involved in this process. A committee has been set up to make the necessary adjustments, and we expect it to be completed before the end of the month.”

This update follows President Bola Tinubu’s signing of the N70,000 minimum wage bill into law. While some state governments have begun implementing the law, others have formed committees to facilitate its rollout.
