NIGERIANS EXPERIENCED BETTER LIFE UNDER MILITARY REGIME – IBB
Former military head of state of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Ibrahim B. Babanginda, made a post on his verified Twitter page reflecting on the differences between military and democratic rule in Nigeria.
He stated that “Some of the best years Nigerians ever experienced all came from the Military system of government; jobs, security, affordable cost of living, good roads & education.”
However, he lamented that “Accessing the Democratic system of government over the years has took us back to a much worse dilapidated state.”
In his words, “Some of the best years Nigerians ever experienced all came from the Military system of government; jobs, security, affordable cost of living, good roads & education. Accessing the Democratic system of government over the years has took us back to a much worse dilapidated state.”
These comments from the former military leader come amidst a current hunger protest that started today and is claiming to last for 10 days.
Demonstrations have been reported in several parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), particularly around the Central Area, including the vicinity of Eagle Square. Reports indicate that the protesters have ignored warnings from security agencies to vacate the protest areas.
The contrasting perspectives shared by Babanginda, who led Nigeria through military rule for several years, and the ongoing public protests, highlight the complex and contentious debate surrounding the relative merits of military versus democratic governance in the country. The hunger protest suggests significant public discontent with the current state of affairs, even as the former military leader publicly pines for the stability and economic conditions that he claims characterized Nigeria’s military-led periods.
