LABOUR LEADERS DISRUPT LP MEETING WITH PETER OBI IN ATTENDANCE

The leadership crisis within the Labour Party escalated yesterday as the Labour Party National Transition Committee (LPNTC) demanded the immediate resignation of Chairman Julius Abure, disrupting a National Working Committee (NWC) meeting with Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate in attendance.

The labour leaders, who forcefully entered the venue of the National Working Committee (NWC) meeting in Abuja convened by former presidential candidate Peter Obi, insisted that Abure’s tenure, along with those other executive members, would expire by the end of this month.

Comrade Abdulwahed Omar, chairman of the Labour Party National Transition Committee (LPNTC), expressed the committee’s determination to forge ahead.

“The issue at hand is the expiration of Abure’s tenure and that of the National Working Committee by the end of this month. We cannot afford a leadership vacuum. We have attempted to resolve this issue peacefully. If we can find a resolution without resorting to conflict, that would be ideal.

“Today’s events suggest that we must either find our way forward or make our way forward. Rest assured, we will not tolerate lawlessness. If anyone attempts to undermine our efforts, we are more than capable of responding,” Omar said.

According to him, the committee had been granted the mandate by stakeholders to organise a new and all-inclusive national convention.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi addressed the labour leaders outside the party secretariat, emphasising his intention to reconcile all aggrieved party members.

Obi urged the party leadership to continue their efforts to bring together all dissenting party members and supporters.

“I will ensure that every discord within the party is addressed promptly. Leaders of the party must come together and determine the future of our organisation,” Obi said.

He stressed the importance of the recent reconciliation between the party and estranged former leaders, led by former Deputy National Chairman (South) Lamidi Apapa, stating that it would greatly benefit the party.

“The reconciliation we witnessed today is critical for the growth of our party. Everyone must reconcile with each other,” Obi said, adding that “reconciliation is a priority for me.

“It is something I do every day, even within my own family. When we have disagreements with our loved ones, we reconcile. Today, during the meeting, I emphasised that I have come to initiate the process of reconciling our party.
“The individuals present here are members of our family whom we must reconcile with. We will sit down together and decide the future of our party. I am ready for a reconciliation meeting whenever you choose.”

After the crisis, the embattled Labour Party national chairman, Julius Abure, commended Obi for trying to make peace among the warring parties in the party.

In a statement released by Labour Party national publicity secretary, Obiora Ifoh, Abure expressed satisfaction with Obi’s leadership role in revitalising the party and steering it towards becoming a formidable entity capable of bringing about the desired new Nigeria.

Abure said, “The Labour Party appreciates your reconciliation efforts, and we will provide our full support. We are not the aggressors here.

“We have always sought peace because we cannot approach future elections with divided loyalty. We have made it clear that we are focused on the 2027 elections, which is why we are the only party to have nominated our candidate.

“We know where we are heading and refuse to be distracted. We will undoubtedly reach our destination of creating a better nation for Nigerians.”

Meanwhile, members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) national transition committee have called on Julius Abure to resign from his position as national chairman of the party.

The NLC, together with some party members, gathered at the Labour Party headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday to demand the his immediate resignation.

The LP crisis has taken another dimension but Abure seems to have got the backing of some powerful people in the party.

Led by acting chairman Abdulwaheed Omar, NLC chanted solidarity songs and called for Abure’s resignation, citing the expiration of his tenure as party chairman.
Abure has consistently said he was duly elected during their convention in Asaba, Delta State earlier this year. However, upon arrival at the party’s headquarters, NLC members found the gates shut and were met with resistance from security officials.
In an attempt to gain entry, the police used tear gas to disperse the protesters.
The protesters persistently urged the security personnel to open the gate as their voices echoed in the air.

CRACKS IN TINUBU’S DYNASTY AS PRESIDENT LOCKS HORN WITH LAGOS LAWMAKERS, GAC The removal of the embattled lawmaker, Mudasiru Obasa, as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has created cracks in President Bola Tinubu’s dynasty. Ismaeel Uthman writes There are indications that President Bola Tinubu’s decades-long political dynasty in Lagos is experiencing its first major crisis following the intrigues surrounding the removal of the embattled lawmaker, Mudasiru Obasa, as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Obasa’s removal and the support given to the lawmakers by many Governance Advisory Council members without consulting Tinubu signal an unexpected political move within the All Progressives Congress, a party where the President remains the state and national leader. Previously, it was widely believed that the President approved Obasa’s removal before the state lawmakers took action. However, sources close to Tinubu and familiar with Lagos APC politics revealed that the President was not consulted before the lawmakers took the decision. According to the sources, the President was embarrassed that such a significant political move was executed without his knowledge and was puzzled why many GAC members would support the decision. Obasa was removed as Speaker on January 13 by 36 lawmakers over allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, and financial mismanagement. The Deputy Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, was immediately sworn in as the new Speaker, while the Chief Whip, Mojeed Fatai, was elected as the new Deputy Speaker. Obasa, who had been Speaker since 2015 and represents Agege Constituency I, insisted upon his return to Lagos from the United States that he remained the speaker. His removal has since divided the GAC caucus and the APC in Lagos. To assert his authority, President Tinubu, according to sources, directed GAC members to persuade Lagos lawmakers to reinstate Obasa and allow him to resign. Sunday PUNCH gathered that the GAC members held a marathon meeting on Monday at the Governor’s Lodge in Marina, Lagos, where they conveyed the President’s directive to the lawmakers. However, despite apologising to Tinubu at the meeting and reaffirming their loyalty to the President, the lawmakers reportedly insisted that Obasa would not be reinstated. Of the 39 lawmakers present at the meeting, 37 voted against Obasa’s reinstatement. It was gathered that the members agreed to write a letter of apology to the President explaining why Obasa could not be reinstated. A viral video on social media showed some APC members dancing and singing praises of the new Lagos Assembly Speaker, urging her to continue her speakership. According to sources, six GAC members chosen across the three senatorial districts of the state travelled to Abuja on Wednesday to deliver the lawmakers’ letter to Tinubu. However, for undisclosed reasons, they were unable to meet with the President. Providing insight into the crisis, a prominent APC chieftain with knowledge of the ongoing intrigues described the development as a major political challenge for Tinubu. According to the source, the Lagos progressive family would never remain the same due to the political machinations. He explained that the crisis was driven by three major political factors: the 2027 governorship election, the rivalry between the Justice Forum and Mandate caucuses within the APC, and the ambitions of Lagos indigenes to dominate the state’s political structure. Sunday PUNCH learned that Obasa belonged to the Mandate group, while many of the lawmakers and GAC members were affiliated with the Justice Forum. The APC chieftain stated that many GAC members, particularly Lagos indigenes, initiated Obasa’s removal to stifle his governorship ambition. He also noted that the power struggle between the Mandate group and the Justice Forum over the control of the party’s structure ahead of the 2027 elections played a significant role in Obasa’s ouster. “The President is not happy that the lawmakers…

2027 REALIGNMENT: ATIKU, OBI, KWANKWASO GET ROLES

2027 REALIGNMENT; ATIKU, OBI, KWANKWASO, EL-RUFAI GET ROLES The 2027 general elections are about two years away and the realignment of forces to dislodge the All Progressives Congress (APC) from power, especially at the federal level appears to be on the upswing. In another development, a former top member of the APC, Alhaji Salihu Lukman, speaks of similar efforts gathering steam. Lukman, a former Deputy National Chairman of the APC (North), in an interview monitored on Arise News, elaborates on his scheme, saying key opposition figures in the country have a role to play as they have to jettison their presidential aspirations ahead of the 2027 and provide leadership for a new political party to confront the APC. He urges former Vice President Atiku Abubakar who flew the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential flag in the 2023 elections, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in the elections, Mr Peter Obi, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, standard bearer, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, to prioritize party building over personal ambitions. Lukman, who has since quit the APC, also extends the advice to former party members and opposition figures, including Mr Rotimi Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State but later served as Transportation Minister under the Buhari administration; El-Rufai; Dr. Kayode Fayemi, a former governor of Ekiti State, and Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, a former governor of Sokoto State. According to Lukman, who was also one-time Director General of the Progressive Governors Forum, if these leaders set aside personal ambitions, it will prevent the imposition of candidates in 2027 and foster a stronger political alternative. Excerpts: You have been a key member of the APC, now you are saying Nigeria needs better leaders. What are your grievances? What do you think is wrong with the APC that you are asking all the critics and opponents of the administration to come together and push the same party out of power? What is wrong with the APC is what is wrong with Nigeria in my view, and I think the view of most Nigerians is that our democracy should give something much better than what we have today. I am not making any new proposals. If you have been following the debate during the merger negotiations that produced the APC, all these arguments have been raised about the kind of leadership a political party should have and what is required for a party to really position itself to direct elected representatives to meet the expectations of citizens. If we argue that APC has failed, the failure of APC is largely due to its inability to meet a number of some of those criteria. Yes, I was a member of the NWC of the APC, I was part and parcel of the APC from formation to possibly the present day but that does not disqualify some of us from highlighting some of the limitations of the APC and I think in terms of the problem of democracy, what was first the problem of Nigeria with PDP that led to the defeat of PDP in 2015? The major issue is that there was no competition within the party. The culture of imposition has taken over the party so much so that it is predictable anybody who has close relationship with Abuja, with the Presidency can pick ticket at any level of the party without bothering to contract relationships with other members of the party, and I think that those were some of the issues that we used to campaign against the PDP and made the APC popular and Nigerians trusted us and believed that we were capable of producing a party that could drive the process of changing Nigeria which was the campaign mantra in 2015. Unfortunately,…
