SENATE PROMISES SPEEDY PASSAGE OF NEW MINIMUM WAGE BILL
The Senate on Tuesday promised to fast track its consideration and passage of a new Minimum Wage Bill for the country.
According to The Nation, this is even as the Red Chamber commended the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress for suspending its indefinite strike for one week.
These were said by Senate President Godswill Akpabio in an Abuja plenary.
Akpabio’s remarks came after a motion urging the TUC and NLC to put a stop to the strike.
The Senate Committee on Labor and Employment’s chair, Senator Diket Plang (PDP-Plateau Central), sponsored the resolution.
The NLC and TUC, however, announced during the motion’s discussion that they would be pausing their strike action for a week in order to continue talks with the federal government.
The Senate rescinded the motion in response to the information.
“Taking it [the motion] will mean that we are jumping the gun and trying to settle the issues for them,” stated Akpabio.
