JUDICIARY, BIGGEST THREAT TO NIGERIA’S DEMOCRACY – PETER OBI

Presidential Candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has described the judiciary as the biggest danger to democracy in Nigeria.

Obi stated that there had been a decline in the judiciary, stressing that the problem of the country was not the electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The former Anambra State Governor made this known during the fifth memorial of late Justice Anthony Aniagolu at the Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu.

Obi said there is an urgent need for revitalisation of the Nigerian judiciary, saying that all other institutions depend on it for the country to thrive.

He said: “While the judiciary, today, still boasts of a few outstanding judges, there is an undeniable decline in our judicial system. This decline poses a significant threat to the future of Nigeria. Justice is increasingly commodified, and delivered in favour of the highest bidder.

“Whenever democracy is discussed, fingers point to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the problem.

“But INEC is not the problem. Instead, the judiciary is. The judiciary is the biggest threat to Nigeria. If our judiciary is effective, our businesses will thrive.”

Speaking about the rule of law, the ex-governor said, “When the rule of law is compromised, the most vulnerable members of society are disproportionately affected. And the fabric of our society begins to fray. The integrity of our institutions, the protection of human rights, and the stability of our nation are all jeopardised.

“The rule of law is the highest intangible and most valuable asset of any society. And we must work tirelessly to protect and preserve it. We must prioritise the pursuit of justice above all else.

“I emphasised the urgent need to revitalise our judicial system by safeguarding its independence and promoting the values of character, competence, capability, compassion, and integrity among our jurists, as well as within our political leadership.

“By doing so, we can ensure justice and fairness prevail as we endeavour to build a better Nigeria for all.

“Nigeria has become a country where anything goes. There is no rule of law and almost no judiciary. Everybody could be pushed down because there is no rule of law.“Because the judiciary has become commercialised and depends on how much one pays, it has become difficult to get true justice in the judiciary. At any point in time where the judiciary is not working, the society suffers.”

PDP GOVERNORS AFFIRM UDE-OKOYE AS NATIONAL SECRETARY State governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party have affirmed a former National Youth Leader, Sunday Ude-Okoye, as the party’s National Secretary in accordance with the Appeal Court’s judgment in Enugu State. Under the leadership of Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, the PDP governors distanced themselves from the embattled Samuel Anyanwu and confirmed Ude-Okoye as the party’s national secretary during a meeting held in Asaba, the capital of Delta State, on Friday. In a communique made available to journalists and signed by Mohammed, the PDP governors also asked the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, and the National Working Committee to convene the National Executive Committee meeting by March 13, 2025, at the latest. Recall, the PDP has faced substantial internal challenges both before and after the 2023 general elections, creating ongoing instability within the party. Damagum, who became the acting national chairman, has come under criticism from party members who blame him for the party’s continued struggles. He took over from Iyorchia Ayu who was removed by the court. The leadership crisis has escalated, particularly due to disagreements regarding the national secretary’s position. In 2023, the PDP’s South-East zone nominated Ude-Okoye to replace Anyanwu, who had been chosen as the party’s candidate for the Imo State governorship election. The South-East PDP argued that Anyanwu should step down from his role as the national secretary given his new political responsibilities, which led to further controversy and division within the party. On December 20, 2024, the Appeal Court in Enugu ruled in favour of Ude-Okoye, confirming him as the new national secretary. The decision was officially communicated to the party leadership on December 24. However, a recent development on January 27, 2025, saw the Court of Appeal in Abuja issue a restraining order, instructing Anyanwu to remain in the position until the Supreme Court makes its final decision. The situation escalated into a crisis on Thursday during the BoT meeting when some party supporters loyal to Anyanwu physically removed Ude-Okoye from the meeting. Normalcy was only restored after the intervention of security personnel. In response, the governors endorsed the Court of Appeal’s judgment and urged the NWC to put in place the necessary steps for its effective implementation. The communique read in parts, “The Forum noted with delight the ongoing efforts at resolving the crisis in the National Working Committee, NWC, on the position of the National Secretary, and has reaffirmed its support for the Court of Appeal judgment; consequently, the Forum advised the NWC to set up the machinery for the effective implementation of the court judgment. “The Forum having examined all the notices required by law to be given to validly convoke NEC advised NWC to reschedule NEC to the thirteenth (13Th) of March 2025.” Regarding the state of the nation, PDP governors maintained that the Federal Government’s macroeconomic policies have caused significant hardship and suffering within the country. “The Forum employed the occasion to review the performance of member states in particular, and the state of the nation in general, as well as developments in the party, as at the end of 2024; and noting the monumental socio-economic, security, infrastructure and other challenges that confronted the nation during the period, the Meeting commended Governors of member states for pursuing policies and programmes that not only ameliorated the plight of the people but were aimed at creating the foundation for sustainable development in their various states. “The meeting noted that the macro-economic policies of the Federal Government have inflicted hardship and [pain on the polity; therefore the Forum calls the Federal Government to either revisit or rejig its macro-economic policies to ameliorate and or stop the hardship/pains that they have inflicted on Nigerians…

AS OPPOSITION APC WE PAID WOMEN FOR DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST PRESIDENT JONATHAN’S GOVT – AMAECHI

AS OPPOSITION APC, WE PAID WOMEN FOR DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST PRESIDENT JONATHAN’S GOVT – AMAECHI Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has expressed concerns that President Bola Tinubu is not prepared to relinquish power in 2027. Amaechi made this known in Abuja at a national conference on strengthening democracy in Nigeria, organised by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy, and Development. He criticised the attitude of Nigerian voters, accusing them of being easily swayed by politicians’ rhetoric and financial inducements. He admitted that when the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was newly formed, the chieftains of the party paid women to demonstrate against the then ruling party – Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and then President Goodluck Jonathan government. According to Amaechi, many citizens do not ask critical questions about governance but rather focus on short-term benefits like transport fares provided by politicians. “We have sweet mouths; we repeat the same things every day. Tomorrow, they will call you in Lagos, and you will go. Somebody told me in Lagos, ‘Mr. Amaechi, these people that gathered here, we called them, gave them transport money, and they came. If tomorrow Tinubu does the same, they will also come,’” he said. Amaechi also recounted his experience during the early days of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), revealing how party supporters were mobilised for demonstrations through financial incentives. “When APC was registered, I feared they might rig us out. So, we agreed to organise a demonstration at Eagle Square. We paid people to bring women and others. When I arrived early to assess the situation, I was shocked to see that the women we brought were wearing ‘Jonathan for President’ shirts.” The former minister said, “All we have here is typical Nigerians, typical Nigerians, and you are clapping. That’s why politicians get away with everything—get away with murder—because you have short memory.” He further warned that if citizens expect a change from the political elite, including the current administration, they would be disappointed. Amaechi said, “Nobody has power that will give it to you, not even me. He also claimed that Nigerian politicians, including Tinubu, are more interested in maintaining power through manipulation and violence than in fair governance. He warned that those calling for change and expecting Tinubu to step down voluntarily are wasting their time, stressing, “None of you here seated can defend the votes, you have complained, complained, and Nigerians have clapped for you.”
