THEY ABANDONED NOVEL IDEAS I INTRODUCED AFTER I LEFT POWER – JONATHAN

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said some of his ideas were jettisoned after his exit from office.

Jonathan, who was President from 2010 to 2015, said this during the Founder’s Day Colloquium to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State, on Friday.

The colloquium, with the theme, “Re-Imagining Tertiary Education for Africa’s Present and Future Reality”, was held at the university’s main auditorium.

While recalling that women were admitted into the Nigeria Defence Academy, Jonathan said he faced serious challenges but had his way as the president of the country.

“I recall the challenges faced by women in the military. But as President, I directed that the Nigeria Defence Academy commence admission of women into the institution.

“However some of the ideas, which could have helped in the technological development of the country were jettisoned,” he said.

The ex-President also called for the recalibration of the nation’s educational system to focus more on technology and innovation.

While describing the focus on acquiring only certificates as damaging to the economy, he stressed that the attitude should be discouraged by emphasizing knowledge and skills acquisition to produce graduates that would pilot the economy.

He said: “I want to congratulate the founder of this university and say that because of the success of the university, successive governments gave licences to other private universities to operate.

“There is always resistance when one starts something new, but with your commitment and dedication, your efforts in the last 25 years are commendable.

“All founders of private universities in Nigeria need to celebrate you for opening the door for them.”

He thanked God for using the former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsami Abubakar, to bring democracy to the country.

Also speaking, Abubakar, who was instrumental in the establishment of the university, said Igbinedion University had immensely contributed to the growth and development of Nigeria in almost every sector.

He congratulated the Chancellor and Founder of the university, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, for the foresight to pursue a private university license 25 years ago.

Deputy Pro-Chancellor of the university, Lucky Igbinedion, who spoke on behalf of the Pro-Chancellor, and Founder of the university said 25 years after, the effort of establishing the institution had paid off with the springing up of more private universities in the country.

The Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the university, Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, disclosed that students of the institution were exposed to entrepreneurial and skills acquisition modules.“At 25, it is significant to note that the brilliant exploits of our Blue-sky graduates in their various fields of endeavour across the globe evidenced the quality of our products,” he added.

BREAKING: FG STOPS OCTOBER FAAC REVENUE TO RIVERS STATE

BREAKING: FG STOPS OCTOBER FAAC REVENUE TO RIVERS STATE The Nigerian government has confirmed that it has stopped the October monthly Federation Account Allocation Committee, FAAC revenue payment to Rivers State amid the ongoing face-off between Governor Simi Fubara and the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesome Wike. The Spokesperson of the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, Bawa Mokwa, disclosed this exclusively to DAILY POST on Friday. This comes as the Nigerian Government on Wednesday announced the approval for the disbursement of N1.1411 trillion as the October 2024 Federation Accounts Allocation Revenue to Federal, State, and local government councils. However, a report emerged that FAAC revenue in October was not disbursed to Rivers State following a court stopping the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian government from carrying out such action. Reacting to the development, Mokwa said the OAGF as a government agency will respect the court order. Meanwhile, he stated that the October monthly FAAC revenue has not been disbursed to respective states as of filing the report. “What I got is that the October 2024 FAAC has not been distributed yet. However, the Federal Government will obey the court order on the matter of Rivers State allocation. “We are going to follow due diligence as long as there is no contrary order. In case there is a contrary, the status will remain,” he told DAILY POST. He added, “The process of disbursement of the October 2024 monthly allocation is going.”. Recall that on October 30, this year, Justice Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court barred CBN and the Nigerian government from disbursing monthly allocations to the Rivers State government. This comes after an originating summons filed by the factional Rivers State Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule. The Amaewhule case was based on the grounds that the Rivers State Executive, under the leadership of Simi Fubara, was yet to comply with the order of a Federal High Court directing it to re-present the 2024 appropriation bill to the Amaewhule-led faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly. In the past month, the Amaewhule faction, backed by Wike, former Governor of Rivers State, had been in a political battle with Fubara. Recall that upon the emergence of Fubara as governor, he fell apart with his predecessor, Wike, which had led to a month-long crisis in the oil-rich state.

NORTH CENTRAL KICKS AS PDP POSTPONES NEC MEETING

NORTH CENTRAL KICKS AS PDP POSTPONES NEC MEETING For the umpteenth time, the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed its National Executive Committee meeting initially slated for November 28. The party in a statement on Thursday said the postponement became necessary to enable members attend the burial of the Akwa Ibom State Governor and late First Lady of the state. The statement signed by the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, said the 99th National Executive Committee meeting was postponed due to the funeral of Patience Umo Eno, the late First Lady of Akwa Ibom State. The statement said, “Distinguished members of the National Executive Committee may recall that the NEC meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 24, 2024, was rescheduled to hold on Thursday, November 28, 2024, after an extensive meeting of leaders, critical stakeholders and relevant organs of the party held on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.“However, at its meeting of Wednesday, November 20, 2024, the attention of the National Working Committee was drawn to the programme of events of the funeral ceremony of the late First Lady of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Mrs. Patience Umo Eno, wife of the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, which events coincide with the scheduled dates of activities for the 99th NEC meeting.“After due consideration, the NWC, recognising the need for party leaders to commiserate with Governor Umo Eno and also participate in the funeral, hereby wishes to notify distinguished members of NEC of our party that the 99th NEC meeting, earlier scheduled for Thursday, November 28, 2024, will now be held on a date that will be communicated to members in due course. “All NEC members should please note the change of date and be guided accordingly. The NWC sincerely regrets the inconveniences this change of date will cause distinguished members of NEC.” the statement said.Meanwhile, addressing North Central youths in Abuja earlier, Ologbondiyan disclosed that respecting the party’s constitution was the only way to address the challenges facing the PDP and also fixing Nigeria. “Anything outside of this demand will end up an exercise in futility,” he warned. The former party spokesman said, “Leaders must look at the bigger picture and address the truth wherever it is required. We must tell those who have undertaken to either kill the PDP or render it comatose that the party is not a one-man organisation. The founders named it the Peoples Democratic Party. It is, therefore, owned by the people of Nigeria and not any individual, no matter how well placed.“The National Executive Committee of the party took a decision at its 98th meeting to consider the demand of the North Central at the 99th meeting scheduled in August this year but the proposed NEC has suffered untold postponements to the detriment of the party and Nigerians. “These postponements of NEC by the National Working Committee is an aberration that shows a huge disrespect for the constitutional order of the party.” Ologbondiyan noted that the North Central region would continue to press for what rightly belongs to it. “It is trite wisdom that as long as Damagum is being encouraged to continue to sit on the position of North Central, the concept of fixing the PDP will be mere lip servicing. “
