POPE FRANCIS: CARDINALS MEET TO DISCUSS SUCCESSOR

The cardinals are now meeting to discuss who should be the next pope.

Some of the liberal ones, who feel safe because they’re in favour with the ailing Pope Francis, can be seen comparing notes in a bar near the gates of the Vatican.

The conservative cardinals are more nervous: they gather at suppers in each other’s apartments or — if they can trust the fawning waiters not to betray them — in a favourite restaurant.

Perhaps you can see the flash of a bishop’s ring as he taps a piece of gossip into WhatsApp; the Holy See employs world-class electronic spies, so everyone uses a private phone rather than the Vatican-issued ones.

Even the phone-tappers are busy exchanging information, because like everybody in Rome they suspect that the painfully fragile Francis — who is often too short of breath to read out his own sermons — hasn’t got long to go.

They are just guessing, of course. The Pope is secretive about his health, and two years ago he bounced back from major surgery on his colon that was assumed to be advanced cancer. Even so, he’s 87, the oldest pope for more than a century, and a conclave can’t be too far off.

Ludwig Ring-Eifel of the German news agency KNA said in January that seeing the Pope so short of breath at a press conference at which he was too ill to answer prepared questions was “a difficult moment for me … and you can tell that this situation has also affected many colleagues emotionally”.

At the beginning of March, Andrew Napolitano, a retired Superior Court judge from New Jersey, was staying in the papal guest house behind St Peter’s.“The Pope is in poor health, can barely speak or walk; and he radiates sadness,” he reported . “I don’t think he’ll be there much longer.”

ANAMBRA SEALS CHURCH OVER RITUAL PRACTICES The Anambra State Government has sealed a popular church known as “Children of the Light Anointing Ministry” run by Pastor Onyebuchi Okocha, also known as “Onye Eze Jesus”, over alleged involvement in controversial “Oke-ite” traditional practice. The church located in Amafor village, Nkpor in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state was sealed by operatives of the state security outfit, “Agunechemba” during their visit to the premises on Sunday. During the visit to the site, some substances including containers and other items were found at the premises. This was disclosed in a post on the Anambra State government X handle on Sunday. This development, it was gathered marked the third high-profile crackdown on “quick riches” spiritualists in Anambra, following the crackdown and arrests of popular native doctors and individuals engaged in “Oke-ite” practices. The state authorities also sealed some of their shrines for engaging in such activities. It was gathered that “Oke Ite” is a concoction made from human parts, animals, and herbs mixed in a mud pot and used for money rituals and the state authorities have identified it as a fraudulent scheme used by native doctors to deceive unsuspecting victims. Ken Emeakayi, the Special Adviser to the Anambra State governor, Chukwuma Soludo, on Community Security, also announced the closure of the church while leading members of “Operation Udo Ga-Achi” to the site. Emeakayi stated that the action was taken in response to public complaints and a video where the pastor allegedly admitted to practising “Oke Ite” and other dubious rituals. He said, “The state government will conduct forensic tests on liquid substances found at the ministry. While the state government does not oppose any religious practice, it will not tolerate those that promote a ‘get-rich-quick’ mentality. “Additionally, forensic experts will analyse samples from River Bethsaida, where the spiritualist, also known as ‘Aka na Asa Uchu’, is said to conduct baths for individuals. “The investigation aims to determine any potential health hazards associated with the practice. The Anambra State government remains committed to curbing fraudulent religious and ritualistic practices in the state.” The spiritualist was said to have gained popularity for his style of taking followers to a river in Nkpor.

ANAMBRA DECLARES WAR ON RITUAL KILLINGS, FRAUDULENT SPIRITUAL PRACTICES

ANAMBRA DECLARES WAR ON RITUAL KILLINGS, FRAUDULENT SPIRITUAL PRACTICES Anambra State has taken a bold step to combat criminal activities linked to ritual killings and fraudulent spiritual practices with the enactment of the Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025. The new law, signed by Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, aims to purge the state of criminal elements masquerading as native doctors and spiritualists, who have been accused of fueling a culture of get-rich-quick schemes through occult practices. The law specifically targets “evil native doctors, fake native doctors, and false prophets”, all of whom are now considered persona non grata in the state. Authorities emphasize that this is not a ban on traditional religion but a necessary measure to curb the rise of dangerous practices that have led to ritual killings and criminal activities. Reports indicate that certain ritualistic practices, including the use of the Oke-ite pot—a clay vessel allegedly infused with body parts, herbs, and other ritualistic elements—have been linked to human sacrifice and money-making rituals. Other associated practices, such as Uduakomili, Ibobo, and Awale, are also believed to contribute to the erosion of Anambra’s moral fabric by promoting fraudulent wealth acquisition. In addition to these, Odeshi charms, which are said to provide bulletproof protection for criminals, have been widely used by kidnappers and armed robbers, further worsening insecurity in the state. These criminal activities have been blamed for luring Anambra’s youth into illicit means of acquiring wealth, undermining traditional Igbo values of hard work, diligence, and honesty. Historically, Igbo society placed great emphasis on ethical business practices. The Igba-boi system, where young apprentices work under a master before earning the right to start their own businesses, has been internationally recognized, even by institutions like Harvard University, as a model for business incubation. However, recent years have seen a shift towards an unhealthy obsession with quick wealth, often without legitimate means. Parents, once the custodians of discipline and integrity, are now accused of enabling their children’s criminal activities. Some even go as far as funding “Yahoo training schools”, where young people are taught online fraud under the pretense of reclaiming wealth from the West. This societal decay, according to critics, has resulted in a generation that prioritizes extravagant lifestyles over genuine hard work. In response to the growing menace, Governor Soludo’s administration has launched Operation Udo-Ga-Achi, backed by a structured security network, Agunechemba, aimed at tackling crime at its roots. This initiative seeks to restore Anambra’s reputation as a land of industrious and morally upright individuals. State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eliminating criminal elements, stating that “the fight is for the soul of Anambra”. He urged citizens to support the enforcement of the Homeland Security Law, ensuring that traditional practices are not used as a cover for criminal activities. As the battle against Oke-ite and its affiliated rituals intensifies, the government remains firm in its resolve to sanitize the state, ensuring that the next generation of Ndi Anambra upholds the values that once made the Igbo people a global model of hard work and integrity.
