REAL STORY ON DEMOLITION OF IGBO MAN’S PROPERTY IN ABUJA, BY WIKE

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has revealed what transpired between him and the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the SNECOU Group Limited, Chief Nicholas Ukachukwu, who decried the demolition of his investment on 214 hectares of land in the Asokoro district of FCT.

Ukachukwu accused Wike of ordering the demolition without any court order despite pending valid two court orders from separate courts restraining him and the FCT administration from tampering with the property.

Speaking in a recent interview with Channels, the Anambra-born businessman called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and save the multi-million-naira invested in the property.

Ukachukwu claimed that the property was demolished because it was owned by an Igbo man, and not because the company violated any law.

Claiming that the demolition was done in bad fate, Ukachukwu said: “Wike called for a meeting over the land, we went with our documents after seeing what we had with our lawyer and other company, Sunrise which they gave part of that land. Wike said that there is nothing on this that the court should take its effect.”

Reacting to the allegation in a press briefing, Wike said the land allocated to Ukachukwu did not have the approval of any minister as his predecessor.

The FCT minister said the land-grabbing in Abuja is becoming rampant because some officials in the land department of his ministry have compromised.

Wike said, “I have been doing this before. I will continue to do it. And nothing will happen. Criminals are criminals. They may come in different ways.

“I have never seen people like land-grabbing people in this place. I came in, (I met) so many petitions. One company came with different petitions, with different owners of properties. I summoned all of them. They came with their lawyers, senior advocates.

“And I said look what is this? Companies presented their own cases. Company A presented their own case, company B presented their own, company C, company D, Company E, I said okay, I’m going to seek advice from external solicitors. I’m not going to take advice from insiders … because the biggest (fraud) is that the Land Department has been compromised. I sought the views of senior lawyers and told them, we need to do things differently…

“This land, by this so-called ethnic jingoist, talked about, was allocated when there was no minister. The minister left on May 29, 2023. By June the land was allocated by the director of lands.

“We all met and agreed that nobody should do anything on the land until we are able to take a final decision. You know what happened? These guys thought they were too smart and they started selling the land.”

The minister said there was a time when he wanted to commission a Water Park, and he was informed he could not, saying, “The Pacco and its allies had gone to court stopping me from commissioning the water park.”

“You see these guys (some officials in FCTA) are colliding with the plaintiff against the FCTA. I’ve never seen people who are so fraudulent like this! What they do here. They sued you, they sued me as FCT minister. They have court judgments in their pocket. I told him you are wasting time. His brother sent me a text message. I have never met his brother but he sent me a message saying, “You told your Ikwerre brothers you will deal with Igbos in FCT’, Imagine such.“Why do we behave like this in this country? We keep doing the same thing and expect different result. If you transfer a director, he would say, ‘Oh! It’s because I am Hausa! If you transfer another one, he would say, ‘It’s because I am a Muslim’, but why?” he added.

However, the NEF argued that these measures disproportionately impact Northern Nigeria, which faces challenges such as insecurity, poverty, and youth unemployment. The Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF) has expressed strong reservations about the President Bola Tinubu-led government’s proposed Tax Reform Bills, describing them as flawed and potentially harmful to Northern Nigeria’s economic realities. In a press statement signed by A.M Al-Amin Daggash, Chairman of the NEF Board on Saturday, the forum outlined its concerns and recommendations while calling for an immediate suspension of the reforms. The forum stated, “It is terribly shocking, that, in this time and age, with nearly three decades of unbroken experimentation of democratic governance, our dear country will be so sadly saddled with a government that is working assiduously, to deny its citizens, the vigorous ventilation of democratic opinions and freedom of expression.” The proposed reforms, comprising four bills – the Nigeria Tax Bill, Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, and Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill – aim to enhance tax collection efficiency and boost government revenue. However, the NEF argued that these measures disproportionately impact Northern Nigeria, which faces challenges such as insecurity, poverty, and youth unemployment. “The sudden and abrupt introduction of these obvious draconian Tax Reform Bills by the Federal government would certainly exacerbate rather than alleviate the unbearable existing harsh economic realities being faced by the poor and vulnerable people in Northern Nigeria,” the statement read. The forum criticised the Nigerian government for failing to adhere to global best practices in policy-making, such as engaging stakeholders and designing a transparent implementation mechanism. “These glaring failures necessitated the timely setting up of a Committee of Experts on the field, by the Northern Elders’ Forum,” they added. Among their recommendations, the NEF urged the government to suspend the rush to implement the bills, prioritise dialogue with stakeholders, and reconsider plans to increase VAT. They also called for the protection of strategic institutions like TETFund, NITDA, and NASENI, stating, “We strongly recommend that the status quo should be maintained by the government, so as to strengthen and protect these strategic national institutions.” The forum also emphasised the need for fairness in VAT revenue distribution and advocated for the exemption of agricultural goods and livestock from VAT, noting the significant impact on Northern Nigeria’s economy. Furthermore, they proposed replacing contentious terms like “ecclesiastical” with “religious” to promote inclusivity and recommended exempting religious organisations and family inheritance wealth from taxation. The NEF concluded, “The leadership of Northern Elders’ Forum holds the firm view that government’s interests will best be served by actively engaging in comprehensive dialogue with varied and critical stakeholders, in order to foster very admirable legislative outcomes that will respect the rights of all citizens.” The forum reaffirmed its commitment to contributing towards achieving a transparent and equitable tax administration system that prioritises national unity and economic progress.

TERRORISTS KILL MIYETTI ALLAH CHAIRMAN IN KATSINA, ABDUCT WIVES, DAUGHTER Suspected terrorists have killed Alhaji Amadu Surajo, the Acting Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Katsina State, in a brutal attack on Mai Rana village, Kusada Local Government Area. The assailants also took the lives of three others and injured several residents during the overnight raid. According to reports, they abducted Surajo’s first and second wives along with his daughter, a university undergraduate. However, sources confirm that the first wife was later released. Surajo, who previously served as MACBAN’s state secretary, became Acting Chairman following the mysterious disappearance of Munnir Lamido, the National Vice President of MACBAN and the Katsina State Chairman, in June 2023. Lamido vanished while travelling to Kaduna State, and his vehicle and phones were later found near Maraban Jos. His disappearance remains unresolved. Security operatives have been deployed to Kusada, which was previously considered a relatively peaceful area in Katsina, raising questions about whether the attack was more than an act of banditry. The police command has yet to issue a statement on the incident. The slain MACBAN leader and the other victims will be buried according to Islamic rites, while injured survivors are receiving medical treatment.
