ENUGU YOUTHS CAUTION WIKE OVER REMARKS AGAINST MBAH

Enugu youths, under the auspices of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), have issued a stern warning to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Nyesom Wike, over his recent comments against Governor Peter Ndubisi Mbah.

In a statement released on Friday, the Chairman of the NYCN Enugu State Chapter, Comrade Chukwuebuka Bartholomew Okoh, expressed concern that Wike’s remarks suggested an intent to undermine PDP governors who do not align with his stance. He described such comments as unnecessary and dangerous to the unity of the party.

According to Okoh, statements like these only serve to weaken the PDP’s internal structure and distract from critical governance and development issues.

He emphasized that Governor Mbah has been instrumental in fostering the growth and stability of Enugu State, ensuring leadership remains focused on meaningful progress. He noted that attempts to discredit Mbah’s efforts through inflammatory remarks are not only unfair but also detrimental to the PDP’s cohesion, particularly in the South-East region.

The youth leader urged Wike to exercise restraint and adopt a more diplomatic approach when addressing party matters. He stressed that as a former governor and serving minister, Wike has an obligation to promote harmony within the PDP rather than fuel unnecessary conflicts that could derail the party’s objectives.

Reaffirming their support for Governor Mbah, the Enugu youth body called on PDP stakeholders to focus on strengthening the party’s structure instead of engaging in divisive politics. They maintained that unity remains the party’s greatest asset and should be safeguarded at all costs.

DONS EZE, PhD, Political Philosopher and Journalist of over four decades standing, worked in several newspaper houses across the country, and rose to the positions of Editor and General Manager. A UNESCO Fellow in Journalism, Dr. Dons Eze, a prolific writer and author of many books, attended several courses on Journalism and Communication in both Nigeria and overseas, including a Postgraduate Course on Journalism at Warsaw, Poland; Strategic Communication and Practical Communication Approach at RIPA International, London, the United Kingdom, among others.

SANUSI REMAINS EMIR – KANO GOVT Kano State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, BarristeHaruna Isa Dederi has cleared air that the ruling of the Court of Appeal, Abuja division, on the State Emirship tangle did not in anyway invalidate the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th emir of Kano. Dederi declared that, “having passed a landmark verdict on January 10, 2025, that reaffirmed the power of the Kano State government to reappoint Sanusi, it is impossible for the Court of Appeal to set aside or quash it’s own decision on the same matter.” The Attorney General made the position known to journalists while reacting to Friday ruling of the Appellate Court on the application for stay of execution filed by Alh. Aminu Baba Dan Agundi, one of the kingmakers loyal to the 15th Emir of Kano, Alh. Aminu Ado Bayero, pending determination of the appeal at the apex court. According to Dederi, the matter is “functua officio”, adding that only the Supreme Court has the power to set aside the decision of the Appeal Court handed by Justice Mohammad Mustapha on January 10, 2025. “The Appeal Court today, after hearing their application for a stay of execution, ruled that the status quo should rather be maintained as it is now, until after the judgment of the Supreme Court. The have filed an appeal at the Supreme Court. “It doesn’t mean that the judgment delivered on January 10, 2025, has been quashed. That judgment is still standing and still in place and subsisting. The Court of Appeal cannot reverse its own decision. It is not possible. It is only a supreme Court that has the power to set aside the judgment given by a lower court,” Dederi noted. It would be recalled that on January 10, 2025, a three-member panel of Court of Appeal, Abuja division, led by Justice Mohammad Mustapha set aside the judgment of Justice A. Liman of the Federal High Court, Kano, which nullified the steps/actions taken by the Kano State Government pursuant to the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024, including the appointment of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano. Dissatisfied with the verdict, DanAgundi had since proceeded to the Supreme Court to upturn the lower court’s verdict.

I”M NOT A RELIGIOUS BIGOT – TINUBU TO CATHOLIC BISHOPS President Bola Tinubu yesterday insisted that he has no religious bias neither is he a bigot. Tinubu told a delegation of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria who visited him that for Nigeria itself to develop, it must be above religious bigotry. He spoke on a day his government rebutted allegations by the United States of America of targeted killings of Christians in Nigeria. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the report misinformation and misleading. The President, during his meeting with the Catholic Bishops said he was fully aware of the hardship Nigerians were facing but declared that ongoing economic reforms were necessary to build a stronger nation. “Yes, removing the fuel subsidy was hard, tough for me, but it’s a hard choice that Nigeria must face. We are not going to bankrupt our country,” he said. He added:“We were spending the investment of the future of our children yet unborn; We were spending their rights, and poverty has no religious basis. There’s no religious colouration, no identity. It affects all, and we must fight it together.” On security, the President noted that his government was making progress in tackling insecurity, which according to him affects Christians and Muslims alike. “This insecurity, everyone is affected, Christians, Muslims alike. I have no religious bias; I won’t be a bigot. My wife is a pastor of Redeemed Christian Church. But we have to think of our country; this country must develop and must stand beyond religious bigotry. And I’m here open to you, ready to listen. “We’ve been together for some time. We have an open-door policy. I will not shut my door.” Responding to the bishops’ request for the return of mission schools taken over by government, Tinubu explained that such decisions were under the jurisdiction of state governments. He said he had returned mission schools when he was governor of Lagos State. Leader of delegation, Dr. Lucius Ugorji congratulated Tinubu on his election and acknowledged the challenges posed by his economic policies. He called for more efforts to restore public confidence, improve security, and ensure religious harmony. “Your government’s policy mantra is anchored on the principles of Renewed Hope. In this regard, we are pleased to inform you that the Holy Father, Pope Francis, has declared this year as the year of hope, the Jubilee Year of Hope, a theme we adopted for our conference. We came with the final fruits of our deliberations and will share them with you,” Ugorji, who doubles as CBCN President and Archbishop of Owerri,said. They also urged the government to stop funding religious pilgrimages, arguing that public funds should be redirected to pressing national needs. “The government should allow religious groups to take full responsibility for organising pilgrimages. In their current structure, the national and state pilgrims’ boards serve neither their adherents nor the broader interest of the nation. You’re undoubtedly aware of the instances of corruption that have led to the removal of some board executives to ensure greater efficiency and accountability,” Ugorji stated.
