BAD MARKET FOR PDP IN ANAMBRA STATE AS ASPIRANTS FAIL TO BUY GUBERNATORIAL FORM

As the Peoples Democratic Party closes the sale of its N40m expression of interest and nomination forms for the upcoming Anambra governorship election, no aspirant has stepped forward to purchase them.

The party initially scheduled the sale of forms between February 24 and March 5, with a March 7 deadline for submission.

The Anambra PDP governorship primary is set for April 5, followed by an appeal committee sitting on April 8.

However, an insider in the PDP, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that aspirants are avoiding the party due to internal crises.

The source noted that the ongoing leadership crisis has made aspirants hesitant to invest in the platform.

“As of now, no aspirant has purchased the PDP Anambra governorship nomination forms. They are hesitant due to the party’s instability. The crisis has weakened the party’s influence across different levels, making aspirants cautious about spending such a huge sum,” the source stated.

He further explained that the turmoil, affecting state chapters, zonal bodies, and national organs, has eroded confidence in the party’s ability to conduct a fair primary.

In response to the situation, another party official disclosed that the PDP National Working Committee has revised the election timetable, extending the sale of forms to March 10 to encourage participation.

“The NWC is reviewing the issues, and a revised timetable will be made public before the end of the week. The deadline for purchasing forms has now been extended to March 10,” the source said.

Additionally, a stakeholders’ interactive session with the NWC is scheduled for March 10 at the PDP national headquarters, Wadata Plaza, Abuja.

The PDP’s internal troubles have worsened due to a dispute over the National Secretary position, with Senator Samuel Anyanwu and former National Youth Leader, Sunday Ude-Okoye, battling for the role. The case is scheduled for hearing and judgment at the Supreme Court on March 10.

The situation escalated further after a controversial South-South zonal congress held on February 22, which lacked the approval of PDP governors, creating more divisions within the Board of Trustees, National Working Committee, and National Executive Committee.

PDP National Deputy Legal Adviser, Okechukwu Osuoha, acknowledged the party’s crisis but remained optimistic about its chances in Anambra.

“I am not surprised by the situation, but I know the National Organising Secretary has set the ball rolling for the governorship election,” Osuoha said.

He admitted that internal disputes, litigation, and factional struggles have discouraged aspirants but insisted that PDP remains a formidable force.

“Yes, there are unresolved issues from the congresses, but PDP has structures across the country, and these matters will be settled soon. Anambra has always been politically challenging, but things will improve,” he added.

However, PDP Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, argued that the wider disillusionment with Nigeria’s electoral process is the main reason aspirants are reluctant to contest.

“People are tired of investing millions in an election process that lacks credibility. Even if you win fairly, political interference from the presidency can overturn results. That’s why many are hesitant,” Osadolor stated.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission has confirmed that the Anambra State governorship election will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025.

Attempts to reach PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, and the National Organising Secretary for comments were unsuccessful as they neither answered calls nor responded to messages.

ATIKU NOT DEFECTING – MEDIA AIDE Former Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar denied reports of defecting from the party. Atiku said reports of his defecting from the PDP were part of efforts to confuse the coalition in process. There have been reports of Atiku finalizing plans to defect from the PDP to the Social Democratic Party, SDP. However, Atiku’s media office on Saturday insisted that the former Vice President is a bonafide member of the PDP. A statement by his media office said: “We have observed that some news platforms are peddling unverified information that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is abandoning the Peoples Democratic Party. “We wish to clarify that the so-called news of Atiku defecting to another party is a total fallacy that holds no merit in logic.” Abubakar stressed that a coalition would accommodate all opposition parties, including the PDP. It added: “Hence, it is fallacious and unfounded to allege that the Waziri is jumping the PDP ship. Such an allegation is antithetical to the objective of the grand coalition, which the former Vice President is currently driving alongside other prominent political leaders in the country. “We, therefore, wish to state unequivocally that Atiku remains a principal bonafide member of the PDP, the main opposition party.” The statement stressed that the defection claims were an attempt to “confuse Nigerians about the magnitude of the grand coalition that is at work to rescue Nigeria from the grip of the APC”.

HOW LAGOS SPEAKER OBASA TRICKED ASSEMBLY MEMBERS TO RETURN, FAILED TO RESIGN AS AGREED

HOW LAGOS SPEAKER OBASA TRICKED ASSEMBLY MEMBERS TO ACCEPT HIS RETURN, FAILED TO RESIGN AS AGREED The Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, was expected to return and later resign as part of the agreement to resolve the leadership crisis in the House, a source said on Saturday. The source said unlike the claim of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Obasa actually agreed to resign after few days as part of conditions for his return to office. “Many of the Assembly members were tricked into accepting that Obasa will subsequently resign after Meranda, unknown to them that it was just a political gimmick,” he said. “As soon as he was reelected out of damage control, he adjourned indefinitely, obviously awaiting judgement in the case instituted to legitimise the illegalities.” The source added that the embattled Speaker’s plan was to railroad the presiding judge handling the case. A Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja had on March 7 adjourned proceedings in the leadership crisis rocking the state’s House of Assembly until Monday, March 10, 2025. “That explains why contrary to the pledge to withdraw case, it continued. They already have the judgment written invalidating the proceedings that removed him. All machinery has been put in place towards railroading the judge. “Upon given the judgment, obviously wrong in law, Obasa will direct no appeal on behalf of the Assembly while Miranda is already out of the way. The import is that he had never been removed while Meranda was never Speaker. “The further implication is that the removed clerk will equally return contrary to the resistance of his colleagues, and no proceeding that is valid would have removed him. Then the “Oga” will have his way and rejoice. Barring any last minute change of mind, the judgment cannot change.” Obasa was re-elected as Speaker last Monday following Meranda’s resignation from the position. He was earlier removed as Speaker after lawmakers accused him of poor leadership, abuse of power, frequent lateness to plenary sessions, and intimidating colleagues. His reinstatement marks a continuation of his influence in the state’s legislative affairs. The development has sparked discussions among political observers in Lagos, with many speculating on the implications for the assembly’s leadership. Meranda had been sworn in as the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, moments after she was forced to resign as Speaker under pressure from All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders. She had announced her resignation during Monday’s plenary session, following intense lobbying by APC power brokers, including President Bola Tinubu, Lagos APC Chairman Cornelius Ojelabi, and Attorney General Lawal Pedro (SAN). “Just as we know that party decision is supreme, at this point, I take a bow as your Speaker, and I step down as the Speaker of this great House,” Meranda declared in a live broadcast while addressing lawmakers before stepping down.
