POLICE ACCUSED OF FAILING TO PRODUCE OFFICER WHO KILLED JOURNALIST, ALEX OGBU, PAY N50M COMPENSATION AFTER FIVE YEARS

The Nigerian police have been accused of failing to respect court orders which mandated compensations after a policeman shot dead a journalist Alex Ogbu in 2020.

The group under the aegis of ‘Justice for Alex’ also accused the police of failing to produce the trigger-happy policeman whose action took Alex’s life.

In a statement signed by Gerald O Katchy, Sadare Oladimeji, both coordinators of the Justice for Alex group, it was noted that since the killing of Alex Ogbu five years ago, there have been continual call for justice to no avail.

It was noted in the statement that the late Alex Ogbu left behind an “unemployed wife with a two-year-old daughter, now six years old.”

The group said, “As we will remember, five years ago, exactly on 21 of January 2020, Comrade Alex Ogbu was brutally shot and killed by men of Nigeria Police on January 21, 2020, during a protest by the Shiites in Berger roundabout, Abuja.

“Since the gruesome murder of Alex Ogbu, his family, friends and Comrades have been crying for justice and have taken several steps in this regard, including medical, political and legal steps.

“Permit us to inform you that five years down the line, we are still in this struggle for justice because as law abiding citizens, we believe one of the inalienable rights we hold as citizenry is right to judicial redress.”

The group noted in the statement that the demand for justice may not stop the sadness associated with Alex Ogbu’s untimely death, it was committed to ensuring that ‘brutal, unprofessional and killer police officers who populate the rank and file of the Nigeria Police Force are exposed and duly sanctioned and weeded out.’

The Nigerian police were also accused of failing to comply with a court order, which mandated the payment of N50 million as compensation for his killing.

It said, “As a way of update, let us bring to your collective knowledge that, after more than three years of legal battle, on Wednesday, June 21st, 2023, Justice Mohammed Abubakar of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), sitting at Court 58 in Kurudu, Abuja, ordered the Nigeria Police Force to pay the sum of N50,000,000 (fifty million Naira) to the family of the late Comrade Alex Ogbu as compensation for his killing.

“Till date since after the Judgement cum Court Order, the police have not complied with this Order. It also did not appeal against it, and so it simply treated the pronouncement of a competent court of the land with pure scorn and impunity.

“Several efforts have been made to make the police see reason and obey court judgement, but all has no far not yielded desired results as the police authorities have adamantly ignored the court order and deliberately frustrated all attempts to pay the family the judgement sum awarded it.”

It was also noted that despite writing letters to the police, saying the court judgement should be honoured, there has been no headway.

The statement noted that while a similar case happened in the United States of America with the killing of George Floyd, Nigeria’s case has been different due to lack of justice.

It said, “Comparatively, four after killing of Comrade Alex Ogbu while on duty as a journalist, similar police brutality was recorded in faraway Minneapolis, United States of America with the killing of Gorge Floyd, and we saw how swiftly the council and US Government quickly brought justice to the family left behind and the correctional measures they took to minimise such occurrence.

“Here we are five years after this irreplaceable and gruesome killing we are still seeking for justice and importantly also to recall that he is a member of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) among others and yet being met with such treatment without seemingly even a fight from the organisation he belonged to, really puts some question marks on it and other hard-working members alive.”

They appealed to Nigerians to help caution the

They threatened to picket the Nigerian police headquarters, stating that “Comrades in the diaspora will be mobilised to do the same at selected cities and important areas in no distant time if the Court Judgement is not obeyed.”

In 2020, SaharaReporters reported that an autopsy result showed that the victim was killed by police bullet contrary to claims that he was an accident victim.

Ogbu was killed while covering a peaceful protest by members of Islamic Movement in Nigeria calling for the release of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.

The IMN had called on the FCT Commissioner of Police, Bala Ciroma, to surrender the police officer who shot Ogbu for prosecution.

His wife, Francisca Ogbu, also told SaharaReporters in 2020 that the police were economical with truth.

She added, “I want the police to come out and say the truth and let the world know that they killed my husband.

“They have so far been economical with the truth by trying to alter the narrative and claiming that my husband was an accident victim.

“The notice given to us to bring a pathologist for the autopsy investigation to be carried out at the National Hospital was short.”

“All I want is justice for my late husband,” she said.

EFCC STAFF STEALS $30,000, OTHER VALUABLES FROM EXHIBIT ROOM IN KADUNA The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is enmeshed in another internal scandal as an officer in charge of Kaduna Zonal Office’s exhibit room allegedly absconded with over $30,000 and other valuable exhibits. Earlier in January, the country’s flagship anti-corruption agency said it had detained 10 officers in Lagos over theft of operational items they could not account for. Although the commission did not disclose the specific items stolen by the officials, DAILY NIGERIAN findings revealed that they stole gold bars worth over N1billion as well as over $180,000 and about GBP 140,000. In the latest scandal, DAILY NIGERIAN exclusively gathered that a member of staff of the commission, simply identified as Polycarp, vanished into a thin air when he failed to account for “over $30,000”. Insiders who preferred anonymity told this newspaper that the zonal director, Benedict Ubi, a couple of weeks ago ordered for an audit of the directorate’s exhibit room, following the internal heist that occurred in Lagos. According to the sources, when Mr Polycarp received the directive that the exhibit room would be audited, he took an excuse to ease himself and fled. “Immediately after the order for the audit was given, he took an excuse to ease himself. Efforts were made to contact him but all his telephone lines were switched off. “This is only what the preliminary audit on foreign currency shows. There are chances that more could be uncovered after a thorough audit of the exhibit room,” said a source familiar with the development. This newspaper learnt that the commission had launched a manhunt to trace the fleeing officer’s whereabouts. In 2019, an official of the commission was indicted for receiving $20,000 as bribe from a business man at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos state. Despite his confession to the crime, he was reinstated by the then acting chairman of the commission, Ibrahim Magu. The matter was not made public. In 2021, the anti-graft agency dismissed an officer after DAILY NIGERIAN published a leaked audio in which he was heard helping suspects on how their accounts could be unfrozen and charges dropped against them. The then spokesman for EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, described the officer as “a corrupt fifth columnist with scant regard for the values of the commission,” adding that his action was contemptuous of the Standard Operating Procedure of the EFCC. “Without prejudice to the outcome of the investigation, snippets of the audio recording clearly showed an abysmally compromised ‘officer’ dropping names to ingratiate his benefactor, a relative of a crime suspect. “By the alleged action, the said officer is no more than a corrupt fifth columnist with scant regard for the values of the commission.” On January 6, the commission announced the dismissal of 27 officers from its workforce for various offences bordering on fraudulent activities and misconduct. Although the anti-graft agency made it appear recent, credible sources however said it was the total number of members of staff sacked for fraud since the establishment of EFCC in 2003. Attempts by our correspondent to get the reaction of the EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, were unsuccessful as he neither picked calls nor responded to an SMS sent to his known mobile number.

OUR PLAN TO RESTART OIL PRODUCTION IN OGONI, BY TINUBU, FUBARA

OUR PLAN TO RESTART OIL PRODUCTION IN OGONI, BY TINUBU, FUBARA Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Siminalayi Fubara and critical stakeholders in Rivers State to restart oil production in Ogoniland. The President and the governor yesterday identified the entrenchment of peace in the oil-rich community as a catalyst for its clean-up and development. President Tinubu urged Ogoni leaders, who were yesterday led to a meeting by Fubara at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, to set aside their age-long differences and grievances, and join hands with the government to achieve the set goal in Ogoniland. Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike joined the meeting midway. Talks on restarting oil production and environmental clean-up of Ogoniland, among other issues, topped the agenda at the meeting held at the President’s instance. According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President assured Ogoni leaders that his administration would prioritise peace, justice, and sustainable development in the area. “We cannot in any way rewrite history, but we can correct some anomalies of the past going forward. “We cannot heal the wounds if we continue to be angry,” the statement quoted the President as saying. President Tinubu, who called for inclusive consultation and mutual understanding, mandated National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu to coordinate negotiations. He commended the delegation for embracing the Federal Government-led dialogue and emphasised the need for collaboration, trust, and inclusiveness to resolve lingering issues in the region. “We must work together with mutual trust. Go back home, do more consultations, and embrace others. “We must make this trip worthwhile by bringing peace, development, and a clean environment back to Ogoniland,” the President said. He directed the relevant ministers, the Nigerians National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and the Rivers State government to cooperate with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) to achieve the mandate. The President said: “It is a great honour for me to have this meeting, which is an opportunity to dialogue with the people of Ogoniland. “It has been many years since your children and myself partnered to resist military dictatorship in this country. No one dreamt I would be in this chair as President, but we thank God. “Many of your sons present here were my friends and co-travellers in the streets of Nigeria, Europe, and America. “I know what to do in memory of our beloved ones so that their sacrifices will not be in vain.” Thanking the President for his support for the Ogoni people by welcoming an all-inclusive representation to the State House, Fubara said the meeting was a follow-up to an assignment given to him by the President through the NSA. Emphasising the importance of resuming oil operations in Ogoniland, the governor pledged the delegation’s commitment to adhering to the President’s instructions and providing the necessary support to achieve the government’s objectives. He said: “What we are doing here today is to concretise the love and respect we have for the President for being behind this meeting and for him to tell us to go back and continue the consultations with a timeline so that the resumption of oil production in Ogoniland will commence.” Ribadu also commended the Ogoni people for their trust in President Tinubu and for embracing dialogue as a path to meaningful progress and enduring solutions. “Guided by Mr. President’s vision that every voice is heard and every interest is considered, my office, the DSS, the government of Rivers State and the Minister of FCT embarked on a diligent and consultative process to assemble this delegation,” the NSA said. He noted that the over 50-member delegation that met with the President reflected the rich diversity of Ogoni society, representing various constituencies, interests, and viewpoints. “The presence of this…
