I READ LAW TO PROVIDE FREE LEGAL SERVICES TO THE VOICELESS – CATHOLIC PRIEST

The Spiritual Director of Okunerere Adoration Ministry, Nsukka, Enugu State, Rev Fr. Prof. Paul Obayi, Monday said he read law to provide legal services pro bono to the voiceless in society.

Fr. Obayi, a professor of New Media and Development Communication, said he had always dreamt of becoming a lawyer and thanked God for seeing him through the rigours of law school.

Quoting him, “God is a lawyer. Jesus is a lawyer. The Holy Spirit is a lawyer. Who has asked Jesus any question and won him? When he was asked about writing, he started writing.

“People began to wonder if he went to school. When he was asked the power he operates with, he asked them by whose powers their sons operate.

“Jesus said when I leave you, I will send you an advocate. I’m now an advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

“My mentor is St. Paul. He was highly learned. Peter wrote one book through Mark. Paul wrote 13 epistles. Jude wrote only one. Paul is a disciple of Gamaliel, the teacher of law. So Paul is a lawyer.

“My name is Paul. There is no part of the world I have not toured. In Nsukka, there is no community that I haven’t gone to.”

On whether he is a controversial priest, Barr Obayi said, “Being controversial depends. I am a gentleman. I don’t make trouble. But what will I do when I am confronted?
Whatever confronts me becomes my age mate. When it comes, you stay to resolve it either through boxing or dialogue.

“We try to register our rights. If it is a privilege, let us know. If it is intimidation, allow us to yawn for the world to hear. We are systematic and respectful. We try at times to assert that this is our right; it is not a privilege. Many don’t know we know the law to address some things.

“However, there are areas we try to operate in the spirit In some cases, if it is the right of the Spirit that is trampled upon. He will then act using us. People might think we are the ones that are acting. If I operate in the spirit, like during delivery, you won’t understand.

“The Devil is not a gentleman. God is a gentleman. The Holy Spirit is brought to match the devil’s madness.”

Fr. Obayi is the chief exorcist of the Nsukka Diocese of the Catholic Church.

AVOID CONFRONTATION WITH TRUMP – EX-NIIA DG ADVISES TINUBU A Professor of Political Science and former Director-General, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Bolaji Akinyemi, has advised President Bola Tinubu to avoid confrontation with the newly inaugurated 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump. Akinyemi gave this advice on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Monday. “If I were President Tinubu, I would try to steer clear of antagonising him because there is nothing a bully likes more than taking on people who are not strong enough to resist him. “You know there is that African proverb that if you are not strong enough to take on a bully and you challenge him, you will only suffer more for it. “That’s the advice I would give President Tinubu: try to avoid having a confrontation with him, even if that means he does things that annoy or step on the interests of Nigeria. There are ways in which you could address his actions without confrontation,” he said. The university don, who is a former Director General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs. NIIA, described Trump’s inaugural speech as uninspiring, shocking, and depressing. According to him, rather than rallying the world for peace, Trump used his speech to threaten the rest of the world with a bouquet of hostile policies, including taking back the Panama Canal, renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, and engaging in tariff wars, among others. Akinyemi said the US president would soon learn that there are repercussions to policies and jingoism, stressing that the world is in for a rough ride during the four years of the Trump presidency. The former Nigerian Minister of External Affairs said Nigeria is no longer a focus for the 78-year-old most powerful president, and that Africa’s most populous nation should not expect anything extraordinary from the Trump presidency. Donald Trump was sworn in as president on Monday, succeeding Joe Biden, four years after an electoral defeat that truncated his second-term ambition

ANAMBRA SECURITY OUTFIT RAIDS KIDNAPPERS’ DEN, DEMOLISHES TWO BUILDINGS USED FOR HOLDING HOSTAGES Anambra State’s newly launched security force, Agunechemba, also known as Operation Udo Ga-Achị, has busted a kidnap gang. The force raided the kidnappers’ hideouts in Isiagu, Awka South Local Government Area amid the fight against crime in the state. Several video clips seen on Monday by SaharaReporters, which had gone viral on social media, show Agunechemba operatives with a bulldozer demolishing two houses allegedly used by kidnappers to keep their victims until ransoms are paid. According to a voice overheard in one of the videos, the two houses separated by a perimeter fence, were used by kidnappers to keep their hostages. The houses were demolished on Sunday in Isiagu community, in the Awka South Local Government Area of the state. A leader of the group, who spoke in Igbo in one of the video clips, claimed that the landlords or owners of the buildings were aware that their properties were being used for illegal activities, including holding kidnapped victims. He said: “Happy Sunday to everybody. Where we are now is Isiagu in Awka South LGA. If you look around me, you will see operatives of Operation Udo Ga-Achị, security outfit of Anambra state, Agunechemba. We are here on the authority of the governor of Anambra state, Charles Chukwuma Soludo. “We are here to show that what our governor said is what is being done. Our governor has determined that Anambra must be well again. Our governor has said that he doesn’t want armed robbery, kidnapping, hard drugs, among others including those who are fake native doctors. “One of the reasons why we are here today… if you look, where we are is Isiagu and these two compounds and houses you are seeing is where the kidnappers are hiding and keeping their hostages. The operatives of the Operation Udo Ga-Achị have arrested some of them and through their confessional statements, discovered that these houses are where they keep their victims. “And like the law of Anambra state has stated that where the kidnappers are using to keep their victims, the place has become the property of the state. Therefore, the two compounds where the kidnappers have been using for hostage keeping have now become the property of Anambra state government. “And following the testimonies of the victims that were kept in these houses, the landlord of the houses knew about the incident. Again, the said landlords have never reported to the traditional ruler of the community, the president general of the community or even reported to the local government and the state, claiming that they were not involved in what was going, which shows that they were part of the kidnapping business. “We have also recovered items that show that both houses were used to keep hostages. In one of the compounds, a mask was recovered among other things recovered before now. So, we are here today to take possession of the property as directed by the governor and the chief security officer of the state. The properties now belong to Anambra because the owners knew that their property were being used for kidnapping.” “Everybody should know their neighbour and know what they do for a living. And like our government promised yesterday that if you give credible information that will lead to te arrest of kidnapper(s), you stand a chance to get a financial reward of N5 million,” the voice added. The demolition of the hideouts is in line with Governor Soludo’s declaration and the newly signed Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025, which states that any house used as a hideout for criminal activities will be forfeited and demolished by the state government.
