FUBARA LEADS RIVERS ELDERS, LEADERS TO ASO ROCK OVER OGONI CLEAN UP

President Bola Tinubu Tuesday met with Governor Sim Fubara of State Rivers State and the leaders of Ogoniland at the presidential Villa Abuja.

Governor Fubara arrived with Senator Lee Maeba and among the delegation were Senators Magnus Abe, Olaka Nwogu, Chief Victor Giadom, Chief Kenneth Kobani, Monsignor Pius Kii, Leedom Mitee, as well as Senators Bennett Birabi Barry. Mpigi and Joe Poroma.

Also present were the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited, Mele Kyari, the Minister of Environment, Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abba, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh and the National Security Adviser, NSA, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

Although the agenda of the meeting was not made public, it was not unconnected to the Ogoni clean-up and the resumption of oil exploration in Ogoniland.

Recall that a coalition of civil society organisations had demanded an allocation of $1 trillion from the Federal Government for the cleanup of the Niger Delta and compensation for the loss of livelihoods, before the resumption of crude oil production in Ogoniland.

The demands were tabled in a statement signed by the organisations including Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria, Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA), and Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), while expressing concerns over the Nigerian government’s reported plans to resume oil production in the community.

The group described the move as a disregard for environmental justice

The statement highlighted the historical environmental degradation caused by oil activities in Ogoniland, documented in the 2011 UNEP report, which revealed widespread pollution of land, water, and air.

The group expressed disappointment that the government has yet to fully implement the UNEP recommendations or prioritize the cleanup of the region.

OHHA MICROFINANCE BANK FILES N20BN SUIT AGAINST ENUGU GOVT OVER ALLEGED UNLAWFUL DEMOLITION Ohha Microfinance Bank Limited has filed a legal suit against the Enugu State Government, claiming that the demolition and destruction of its headquarters and assets were unlawful and without compensation. The bank is seeking a total of N20,420,194,500 in damages for the alleged violation of its constitutional rights. The lawsuit, filed at the Enugu State High Court on Monday, names the Enugu State Government and the Attorney General of the state as defendants. The bank argues that the demolition, which took place on May 15, 2024, violated its constitutional right to own property. The bank is specifically challenging the 72-hour notice it received to vacate its corporate headquarters on Ogui Road, Enugu, followed by the destruction of its headquarters and valuable assets, including two safes valued at N15 million. In its suit, the bank claims that the actions of the Enugu State Government contravene Sections 43 and 44(1) of the Nigerian Constitution and international human rights laws. The suit also includes a demand for N420,194,500 in special damages and an additional N20 billion in aggravated, punitive, and general damages for the unlawful destruction of the bank’s assets. The bank is further requesting interest at a rate of 18% on the special damages from May 15, 2024, until judgment is delivered, and a 10% interest on the total judgment sum until it is fully paid. In his statement, Olu Omotayo, one of the lawyers representing the bank, highlighted that the government’s actions have undermined the state’s claim to be investor-friendly. The lawyer noted that the state’s refusal to compensate the bank for its property violations is a direct breach of Nigerian constitutional rights.

POLICE INSPECTOR FOUND DEAD IN ABUJA HOTEL ROOM AFTER NIGHT WITH SOCIAL MEDIA DATE A police inspector, identified as Lawal Ibrahim from the Kwali Division, has been found dead in a hotel room in the Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. According to reports, Ibrahim died following a rendezvous with a woman he reportedly met online. The incident occurred at Palasa Guest Inn early last Thursday. According to sources, the inspector had invited the woman, identified as Maryam Abba, from Dutse, Jigawa State, three months after their initial interaction on social media. Eyewitness accounts suggest the pair had engaged in intimate relations upon checking into the hotel on Wednesday evening. The following morning, around 6 a.m., the duo reportedly engaged in another round, after which the inspector began breathing erratically and became unresponsive. Maryam, noticing the unusual condition, attempted to revive him by sprinkling water but received no response. She alerted the hotel manager, Danlami Palasa, who then reported the situation to the Gwagwalada police division. Police officers arrived at the scene and found the lifeless body of the inspector in the hotel room. His remains were subsequently taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, where doctors confirmed his death. Authorities recovered several items from the room, including watermelon, a drug suspected to be an aphrodisiac, a phone charger, and the deceased’s police identity card. Maryam has been taken into custody, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is underway. A police source from the Gwagwalada division confirmed the incident to Daily Trust, adding that efforts are being made to determine the cause of death.
