WHY SIMON EKPA CANNOT BE GRANTED BAIL – FINNISH AUTHORITIES

Finnish authorities have given reasons why the controversial pro-Biafra agitator, Simon Ekpa, cannot be granted bail in Finland.

A Senior Detective Superintendent at Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation, Mikko Laaksonen, said on Saturday that the Finnish legal system does not permit bail for suspects accused of the kind of offences Mr Ekpa is accused of.

Mr Ekpa was arrested alongside four others on 21 November on suspicion of terrorist activities.

The Finnish police said Mr Ekpa “has contributed to violence and crimes against civilians in South-eastern Nigeria.”

The District Court of Päijät-Häme later ordered that the pro-Biafra agitator be imprisoned “with probable cause on suspicion of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent.”

He is expected to face charges in May 2025, according to Finnish authorities.

Mr Ekpa was indicted for financing terrorism alongside the four other suspects. The police have a suspicion that the Biafra agitator committed the crime of collecting money in violation of the Finnish Money Collection Act. The Finnish police said he allegedly committed the crimes between 23 August 2021 and 18 November 2024 in Lahti, a town in Finland.

IPOB is a group leading the agitation for an independent state of Biafra, which it wants carved out from the south-east and some parts of south-south Nigeria. The separatist group has been linked to some deadly attacks in the two regions, although it has repeatedly denied its involvement in the attacks.

Meanwhile, hours after the arrest, the IPOB faction loyal to Mr Kanu disowned Mr Ekpa last Friday, explaining that the pro-Biafra agitator was never their member.

When asked if Mr Ekpa’s charges were bailable or if the prosecution was disposed to releasing him on bail, Mr Laaksonen responded, “Finnish criminal procedure/coercive measures do not recognise bail procedure. Our procedure is based on, depending on the case, remand or travel ban as coercive measures for limiting freedom of movement for persons suspected of offences to which such measures are applicable.”

The situation implies that Mr Ekpa will remain imprisoned until May 2025, when he is scheduled to face trial at the District Court of Päijät-Häme in the North European country.

    WE’RE NOT PART OF BIAFRA DECLARATION IN FINLAND – IPOB The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Sunday distanced itself from the second Biafra declaration in FinlandIPOB described the declaration as a shambolic scam and a charade, stating that only the declaration made by the late Odimegwu Ojukwu can stand.Emma Powerful, the spokesman for IPOB, disclosed this in a statement he signed.He explained that IPOB’s mission is to restore the sovereignty of the declared Biafra Independence, which was forced to surrender through genocide by the Nigerian and British governments.The statement reads: “The Noble family and movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), led by the great and indomitable leader, Mazi Nnamdi Okwuchukwu Kanu, wishes to disassociate ourselves from the purported Biafra second declaration by an infamous no-name group. The so-called declaration is a scam. There is no room for another Biafra declaration besides the one our eternal leader, Dim Odimegwu Ojukwu, declared in 1967.“IPOB wishes to commend responsible media organizations and social media bloggers in Nigeria and the diaspora that didn’t give attention to the mockery of the Biafra struggle by infiltrators in Finland and elsewhere.“However, it is imperative to inform the international community, Biafrans, friends of Biafra, and lovers of Biafra freedom that Biafra was declared by our eternal leader, late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, in 1967.“IPOB is calling for a UN-supervised referendum for Biafrans so that the declared sovereignty can be restored. Biafra cannot be declared for the second time by anyone. It is sad that some unscrupulous elements, who failed in their mission to infiltrate and destroy IPOB, went into the jamboree they claimed was Biafra’s second declaration outside the Biafra territory.“Biafrans, and IPOB in particular, are happy that the fanfare the infiltrators had in Finland this weekend was ignored by all responsible media organizations. Those involved in the event in Finland were among the sponsors of insecurity in the Southeast Region.“Their agenda is to destabilize the Southeast, divide the people, and divert the attention of Biafrans and those sympathetic to the Biafra struggle by making the genuine Biafra struggle unattractive to our people. They failed woefully.“In the past, the leader of IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, was pressured by enemies within and without to declare Biafra for the second time, but he refused. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is a brilliant freedom fighter who understands the seasons and times and the rules governing self-determination. When those enemies within and without failed to push Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB into an untimely and unnecessary Biafra declaration, they joined a Nigerian government agent brought from Finland to destroy the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). They had already celebrated their foolishness, which they called Biafra declaration, in Finland last weekend.“IPOB is an informed movement championing the restoration of Biafra sovereignty and freedom and cannot involve itself in self-deception or scam people with the Biafra project. All those involved in the illusion and self-deception called the Biafra declaration in Finland are criminals, uninformed, and fake agents.“Only fools rush where angels dread to enter. The Biafra struggle is a thing of the spirit because blood has been shed and sacrificed for this ultimate project. Any person, nation, or group of people who dare to obstruct the Biafra restoration will pay a heavy price.“The autopilot criminals making money from some of their ignorant followers to make international mockery of the Biafra struggle will all pay a price.     SOUTHEAST STAKEHOLDERS WANT NNAMDI KANU RELEASED, SIMON EKPA JAILED Reactions have continued to trail the arrest of the self-acclaimed Prime Minister of Biafra, Simon Ekpa, with some South-East indigenes calling for his sentencing in Finland.On Thursday last week, the Finnish authorities arrested Ekpa alongside four others and they were subsequently detained by the Päijät-Häme district court for “spreading terrorist propaganda on social media.”The Finnish National Bureau of Investigation, NBI, disclosed that Ekpa, a dual citizen of Finland and Nigeria, is suspected of public exhortation to commit offences with terrorist intent. The charges also include suspicions of financing terrorism.Leading the investigation, the detective, Chief Inspector Otto Hiltunen, said Ekpa is suspected of using his social media platforms to incite violence against civilians and public authorities in Southeastern Nigeria.“The suspect has furthered his efforts from Finland, resulting in violence and other crimes in Southeast Nigeria,” Hiltunen said in a statement.Ekpa’s arrest comes amid the worsening insecurity situation in the Southeastern part of Nigeria, which has seen armed men terrorising the region under the guise of pushing for the actualization of the sovereign state of Biafra.The armed men have been causing mayhem in the Southeast while claiming to be enforcing the Monday sit-at-home order that was first initiated by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, as a measure to get the Nigerian Government to release Nnamdi Kanu.But IPOB, which suspended the sit-at-home, had severally distanced itself from Ekpa, stressing that he’s not their member.Commenting on the arrest, Abia South Senator, Eyinnaya Abaribe said Kanu’s release remained the solution to tackling insecurity in the Southeast and not Ekpa’s arrest.Abaribe said Kanu’s release would reveal the genuine Biafra agitators from the criminals masquerading as gunmen.He said: “You want Biafra fine, but do you get Biafra by killing the same Biafrans you want? How does murdering people, killing people, going around killing policemen, spreading mayhem, and burning police stations help you?“Everyone one of them claims that it’s because Nnamdi Kanu is incarcerated that why the Southeast is experiencing insecurity but it will end when Nnamdi Kanu comes out, then we now know who is a genuine agitator and a criminal.“When Kanu comes out, then he will know his followers. Nobody will have a reason to say we are burning down this police station or killing this person.”On his part, a retired captain of the United States, US, Army, National Defence and Military Strategist, Bishop Johnson said the proper handling of Ekpa’s arrest by the Finnish government might have an impact on his incitement of violence and bloodletting in the Southeast.Speaking with DAILY POST, Ambrose said those funding Ekpa’s operations in the Southeast will also stop if he’s held accountable in Finland.He said: “Simon Ekpa’s arrest will have an impact on the Southeast depending on how it’s handled by the Finnish government.“If the Finnish government holds Ekpa and his accomplices – those sponsoring his operations, if they hold him accountable in Finland not here in Nigeria, it will have an impact.“The incitement coming from him will no longer be viable and those sponsoring him will stop, the incitement will end; that is if he’s held accountable in Finland.”He, however, observed that Ekpa’s arrest might take a negative turn in the Southeast if extradited to Nigeria and detained like Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.Johnson said: “If he’s extradited to Nigeria, there is the possibility that instead of his arrest having a positive impact, it might even lead to more violence because Nigeria as a country is very notorious for its abysmal human rights records.“If you have a situation where Ekpa is extradited to Nigeria and is kept in the same condition Nnamdi Kanu is kept in, there would be those offended that two Igbo sons are…
