ENUGU GOVT GIVES DECEMBER DEADLINE FOR COMMENCEMENT OF COAL MINING OPERATIONS

In a bid to restore its prominence as the leading coal mining state in the former Eastern Region of Nigeria, the Enugu State government weekend met with mineral title holders in the state, issuing them December deadline for commencement of operations.

In a communique issued at the end of a meeting between the state’s Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO) and mineral title holders in the state, the parties resolved to initiate further stakeholders engagement to identify additional challenges in the sector and recommend solutions which would help foster more inclusive and effective mining in the state.

The communique emphasized the need to sensitize host communities on the objectives of MIREMCO and how they could assist in ensuring smooth business operations through cooperation between them and the miners, thereby reducing disruptions.

To uphold transparency and accountability and also ensure that all mineral title holders in the state comply with the regulatory requirements, it was agreed that the committee would make a demand through the Mining Cadastre Office (MCO) for the directories of all mineral titles in Enugu State.

In its efforts to eradicate mineral titles inactiveness and stimulate economic growth in the sector, the committee reiterated its commitment to ensuring that all the titles became operational before the end of 2024.

“The tilte holders are urged to commence operations promptly, with MIREMCO pledging to providing support and addressing any challenges that may arise to facilitate this process,” part of the statement reads.

In his closing remark, Chairman of MIREMCO and Special Adviser to the Enugu State Governor on Solid Minerals, Engr. Samuel Okoro thanked the governor of the state, Dr Peter Mbah and the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake for giving them the opportunity to make their impact in the sector, promising to ensure full compliance with all relevant regulations and standards.

“We are grateful to the governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah and the leadership of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, headed by the Honourable Minister, Dr Dele Alake. We commend his visionary leadership and dedication to the ministry, and we pledge our commitment to ensuring that his leadership leaves an excellent legacy for the sector,” Okoro said.

He also urged the mineral title holders to do their best and make a difference, stressing that the committee stands ready to collaborate closely with them to achieve maximum results.

SENATE PRESIDENT, AKPABIO, PRAISES THE IGBO FOR INDUSTRY, SELF-RELIANCE Senate President Godswill Akpabio has lauded the Igbo people for their industrious spirit and their remarkable ability to develop and invest in the communities they inhabit, no matter their location. Akpabio made these remarks during a night of tribute held in honour of the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah. He highlighted the resilience and entrepreneurial success of the Igbos, especially after the Nigerian Civil War, emphasizing that many Igbo billionaires are entirely self-made. The Senate President mentioned notable Igbo personalities, including Allen Onyema, CEO of Air Peace, and Emeka Offor, an oil magnate, as examples of self-made success stories. He commended the Igbo community for their outstanding contributions to nation-building and their tendency to establish deep roots wherever they settle. “Almost all the Igbo people I know, after the civil war, became billionaires through their hard work,” Akpabio stated. “Whether in the aviation industry, like Onyeama, or business, like Chief Okonkwo and Ifeanyi Ubah, I can confidently say the Igbos are self-made.” Akpabio highlighted the Igbo penchant for building homes and infrastructure wherever they live. “The Igbos are very proud and mercantile people. They are the only elite group in Nigeria that, when they move to a place like Kano, they build houses by themselves rather than rent. In Lagos, they own more than three local governments, constructing homes and thriving there.

HUNGER IN THE LAND: THIEVES INVADE CHURCH, STEAL HARVEST COWS

HUNGER IN THE LAND: THIEVES INVADE CHURCH, STEAL HARVEST COWS LESS than seven days to the ninth “Adult Harvest Thanksgiving Service” of the Celestial Church of Christ, Testimony Parish, Elerumoke, Egbeda, Iyana Ajia in Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State, suspected thieves desecrated the temple of God and made away with two large cows meant for the celebration of the thanksgiving. The animals were worth about N2 million. The thieves had struck last Saturday after the shepherd-in-charge of the parish and other notable leaders of the church had gone to bed. Members of the various committees set up by the church were taken by surprise when they learnt of the theft. A leader of the church identified as Oluso Ayo confirmed the incident to Saturday Tribune on Thursday. He said: “The incident really happened. Suspected thieves invaded our church premises and made away with two cows meant for the harvest celebration. The cows, which were tethered, were untied by the suspected thieves. “We saw the footprints of the thieves and the cows but we cannot say the exact place the animals were taken to. “We learnt that such an incident had happened in the neighbourhood before, but not in our church.” One of the church members who preferred anonymity said: “If this thing could happen in a church environment, where else is safe in this country? “I have never heard before that thieves invaded a church and stole cows, not minding the sizes. The incident is a further confirmation that things have gone awry in this country.” The church had earlier posted on its X account: “Hallelujah. Two missing Cows: Dear Celestials and the general public, these two huge cows were stolen where they were tied in the church premises at CCC, Testimony Parish, Elerumoke area, Egbeda, Iyana Ajia, Ibadan, Oyo State. “They were meant to be slaughtered for the ninth Adult Harvest Thanksgiving of the church coming up this Sunday, 17th November, 2024. “We hereby solicit your prayer for the quick recovery of these harvest thanksgiving cows. Anybody with useful information should contact the Parish Shepherd, Prophet Rotimi Agunbiade Temitope.” The Shepherd-in-Charge, Temitope, who was said to be out of town during our correspondent’s visit to the church, confirmed the incident to Saturday Tribune in a telephone chat. “The incident happened a few days to the church adult harvest scheduled for Sunday, 17th November, 2024. “The cows were purchased with the contributions made by the members. Sadly, their aim of having a bountiful harvest was defeated with the activities of the men of the underworld. “The cows were so huge that nobody would have expected them to be stolen. The two cows cost us one million, nine hundred and eighty thousand naira. “The thieves took advantage of the yet-to-be-completed perimeter fence of the church. “However, as you can see, work has commenced on the completion of the perimeter fence in order to forestall a recurrence of such incident. “We were told that the incident was not new in the neighborhood but this is the first time that we would experience it in our church. “Even though the incident dealt a devastating blow on the church, the 2024 Adult Harvest was held.”
