REPS WILL PASS TAX REFORM BILLS WITH MINOR MODIFICATIONS – DEPUTY SPOKESMAN

Philip Agbese, deputy spokesman for the house of representatives, says the green chamber is determined to pass the tax reform bills proposed by President Bola Tinubu with minor amendments.

Speaking to journalists on Monday in Abuja, Agbese said the lawmakers view the four executive bills as catalysts for economic growth.

Tinubu urged the national assembly to consider and pass four tax reform bills.

The proposed legislations, which has sparked significant debate in the country, includes the Nigeria tax bill, the tax administration bill, and the joint revenue board establishment bill.

Tinubu also seeks to repeal the law establishing the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and replace it with the Nigeria Revenue Service.

On October 28, the Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF) opposed the proposed bills, arguing that the legislations would harm the region’s interests.
The governors emphasised the need for equitable and fair implementation of national policies and programmes to prevent marginalisation of any geopolitical zone.

In response on October 31, the presidency assured the northern governors that the proposed tax laws would not increase the number of taxes.
Speaking on the issue, Agbese said some governors have threatened to deny lawmakers return tickets for the 2027 elections if they continue to support the bills.

He said no one can prevent representatives from backing initiatives aimed at reviving the country’s economy.
“The difference between the new crops of politicians in the house of representatives is that we are intellectually sound, progressively-minded, and pro-Nigeria,” he said.

“We are united across party lines to make sure the country works. This is the disposition of Speaker Tajudeen Abass.
“We were not elected by the governors but our constituents, and as far as the bills will work for those that elected us, we will support it unequivocally, wholeheartedly, and powerfully to ensure that they see the light of the day.”

Agbese said he expects the house of representatives to pass the bills with minor adjustments to refine them with a touch of patriotism and intellectualism.

On November 1, the president said the tax reform bills would
not be withdrawn from the national assembly, as recommended by the national economic council (NEC).

On November 17, Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano, asked the national assembly to reject any attempts to “cheat” the north with the proposed tax reform bills.

5,421 KILLED IN ROAD CRASHES NATIONWIDE IN 2024; 31,154 INJURED – FRSC The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it arrested no fewer than 21,580 traffic offenders between January and December 2024 across the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this while addressing the reporters on the 2024 special patrol operations on Monday in Abuja. Mohammed said the corps recorded a reduction in the number of offenders recorded in 2024 as against 29,220 within the same period in 2023. “This signifies a 26 per cent increase in compliance to traffic rules and regulations. “The total number of offences committed stood at 25,942 representing 23.5 per cent reduction in traffic law violation compared to the data of the same period in 2023,” he said. Mohammed said the analysis of the corps’ annual performance indicated a drastic reduction in Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs). This, he said, was as well as in the number of people injured compared to the annual record of 2023. “From Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2024, a total of 9,570 RTCs were recorded nationwide. This figure is against 10,617 RTCs recorded in 2023 which signify a tremendous reduction of 10 per cent. “Furthermore, 31,154 people were injured in 2024 while 31,874 were injured in 2023 representing a two per cent decrease. “However, the corps recorded a seven per cent increase in fatalities as 5,421 people were killed in 2024 while 5,081 people were killed in 2023. “Meanwhile, a total of 70,530 people got involved in RTCs in 2024 compared to 70,092 of 2023 signifying an increase of one per cent,” he said. The FRSC boss emphasised that out of the total fatalities that occurred in 2024, 411 deaths, representing 7.6 per cent of the total deaths, were not primarily caused by the crashes. He said the crashes were caused by a secondary factor which he described as the very monster the corps was fighting; scooping of fuel from fallen tankers. “This, therefore implies that without the casualties recorded from scooping fuel from crashed tankers, the Corps would have recorded 5,010 deaths in 2024. “This will be as against 5,081 in 2023 signifying a 1.4 per cent reduction in the total number of people killed,” he said. The FRSC corps marshal reiterated that the alarming rate of crashes and fatalities occurred as a result of loading of trailers with goods and persons. This, he said, is in addition to fatigue, speed violations, overloading, dangerous driving as well as poor vehicle maintenance within the period under review.

DEMOLISHED ANAMBRA HOTEL NOT USED FOR KIDNAPPING – OWNER

DEMOLISHED ANAMBRA HOTEL NOT USED FOR KIDNAPPING – OWNER Fresh facts have emerged regarding the demolished hotel in the Oba community, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, as the property’s owner has insisted it was not used for kidnapping or other “nefarious activities,” contrary to the claims made by authorities. The property, officially registered as Udoka Golden Point Hotel and Suites, but popularly known as La Cruise Hotel, located along the Onitsha-Owerri Road, was reportedly demolished on Saturday after operatives of the newly established state security outfit uncovered over 30 graves and a shrine within the premises. According to the authorities, the building, allegedly operating under the guise of a hotel, was exposed following a whistleblower’s tip-off and intelligence gathering. Palpable tension has gripped the Oba community since the state’s security outfit uncovered the graves, a shrine, military camouflage, arms, and cartridges within the hotel. During the demolition, security operatives and local authorities revealed the discovery of over 30 well-partitioned graves located on both the top floor and ground floor of the structure, alongside a shrine. A statement shared via the Anambra State New Media X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday alleged the hotel, known as Udoka Golden Point Hotel and Suites, was a hub for kidnappers and other criminal elements. The statement read, “Oba, Idemili South LGA! Demolition of kidnappers’ den disguised as Udoka Golden Point Hotel and Suites, a.k.a. ‘La Cruise Hotel’, along Onitsha-Owerri Road. The hotel has well-partitioned graves of over 30 on the last floor with a shrine!” However, speaking to journalists over the phone on Monday, the hotel’s owner, identified simply as Udoka, denied the allegations, insisting the structure was never used for kidnapping. He claimed that what was described as “graves” were actually partitioned fish ponds. He said, “The hotel has never been involved in kidnapping. Those things they are calling graves were partitioned fish ponds. I bought the property from the original owner, who constructed it as it is, and the top floor was converted into a fish pond before I acquired it. “The fish pond was designed to allow easy oversight of the fish and for them to be used at the hotel’s bar for barbecue. Since I purchased the property, some interested parties have been upset and wanted to revoke the sale. When that failed, they started manufacturing troubles for me.” Udoka added that he had not been contacted about the demolition and only learned of it after the building was destroyed. He stated, “I borrowed money to purchase the hotel and have not even repaid the loan. If the hotel had been closed and an investigation carried out, the truth would have been revealed.” The owner also mentioned he was in Awka since Sunday to report the matter to the police. He described himself as a legitimate businessman dealing in motor parts, land, and property, and claimed traders in the community could vouch for him. When contacted, the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, refuted Udoka’s claims, stating that a fish pond could not be situated inside a hotel “Fish ponds and shrines on the hotel’s top floor? Even for health reasons, is such an arrangement logical? Where are the fish if it’s a pond? Why is he hiding?” Mefor asked. Responding to concerns that the demolition could discourage investors, Mefor said, “My brother, it’s better not to have kidnappers lurking everywhere in our state.”
