DANGOTE, IPMAN REACH ACCORD ON LIFTING OF PMS, OTHERS DIRECTLY

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN, has finally secured an agreement with Dangote Refinery to lift products directly.

Abubakar Garima, IPMAN National President, announced this on Monday after a meeting of the National Working Committee of the Association in Abuja.

“We’re pleased to announce that Dangote Refinery has agreed to supply IPMAN with PMS, AGO, and DPK directly for distribution to our depots and retail outlets,” Girima said after meeting Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Dangote Group.

Garima also expressed confidence that negotiations with Dangote would yield lower rates in terms of pricing.

He urged IPMAN members to support Dangote Refinery, citing backward integration benefits and positive impacts on Nigeria’s Foreign Exchange market.

On Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, the IPMAN President said the Association is preparing for a seamless transition to CNG refill stations nationwide as it is currently negotiating with the presidential CNG initiative

It was learnt that the Dangote Refinery, at the meeting, pledged to commence the supply of products to over 30,000 IPMAN members and 150,000 retail outlets nationwide.

The move is expected to eliminate middlemen, reduce costs and ensure a steady supply.

IPMAN had expressed frustration at how difficult it was for marketers to lift products from the Dangote Refinery.

However, IPMAN’s claim was refuted by Dangote Refinery.

ENUGU DISCO VOWS TO END ESTIMATED ELECTRICITY BILLING

ENUGU DISCO VOWS TO END ESTIMATED ELECTRICITY BILLING Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL), a subsidiary of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, has vowed to eliminate estimated billing with the roll-out of comprehensive metering for all customers in Enugu State. The Managing Director of the company, Ernest Mupwaya, made this known on Wednesday during a stakeholders engagement in Enugu to outline the company’s vision for reliable power supply and customer-centric services. Mupwaya, who introduced MainPower’s strategic initiatives that are aimed at transforming electricity distribution and enhancing customer service in Enugu State, said the company will commence metering next week with free installations prioritised in high-loss areas. He emphasised that accurate and transparent billing will allow customers to pay only for what they consume, promoting fairness and encouraging energy conservation. “A critical component of MainPower’s service improvement plan is the rollout of a comprehensive billing programme to eliminate estimated billing,” Mupwaya stated. He stated that MainPower aims to meter all customers by 2027. “This initiative is expected to foster greater customer trust while improving MainPower’s revenue assurance. MainPower, a newly formed subsidiary of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), has been established to address the specific power needs of Enugu residents, ensuring reliable, transparent, and efficient energy services. “The company’s creation aligns with Nigeria’s recent regulatory reforms focused on creating a customer-centred power distribution system that supports innovation and customer engagement to drive improvements in reliability and service,” he said. He emphasised the company’s commitment to achieving 24/7 electricity supply across Enugu State over the next three years. “This ambitious goal will be reached through a phased approach, beginning with urban and commercial hubs and expanding to all residential customers. “Supporting this vision requires substantial infrastructure upgrades and partnerships with independent power producers (IPPs) to secure the necessary additional power sources. MainPower’s mission aligns with broader regulatory reforms aimed at sustainable and efficient power distribution,” he added. In a remark, Chinedum Ukabara from the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission, EERC, affirmed EERC’s commitment to fair and transparent regulation to attract investment into the state’s power sector. He urged customers to support those improvements by staying up-to-date with bill payments, as customer cooperation is essential to sustaining the benefits of the reforms.

MULTICHOICE NIGERIA LOSES 243,000 DSTV, GOTV SUBSCRIBERS IN SIX MONTHS

MULTICHOICE NIGERIA LOSES 243,000 DSTV, GOTV SUBSCRIBERS IN SIX MONTHS . The South African pay-TV operator MultiChoice Group disclosed that its Nigerian unit, MultiChoice Nigeria, lost 243,000 subscribers on its Digital Satellite Television (DStv) and General Entertainment on Television (GOtv) services from April to September this year. The company revealed these figures in its Interim Financial Results for the period ending 30 September 2024, which were released on Tuesday. MultiChoice attributed this decline to Nigeria’s high inflation rate, which exceeds 30%, driven by the rising costs of food, electricity, and fuel, causing many customers to disconnect. In its financial report for March 2024, MultiChoice had earlier reported an 18% subscriber loss in Nigeria. The company further reported a 566,000-subscriber loss in the Rest of Africa operations over the past six months, with Zambia and Nigeria contributing the largest shares to this decline. “With the Rest of Africa business having seen a decline of 803k subscribers in 2H FY24, this rate of decline slowed to 566k in 1H FY25,” stated MultiChoice. The loss included 298,000 in Zambia and 243,000 in Nigeria, while other markets experienced a minor decline. Extreme inflation and currency instability have negatively impacted the group’s profits, with MultiChoice Group CEO Calvo Mawela commenting, “We are making good progress in addressing the technical insolvency that resulted from non-cash accounting entries at the end of the last financial year.” Mawela noted that the group’s net equity position is expected to recover by November. With regard to Zambia’s losses, the company attributed them to extensive power outages caused by drought, leaving some regions with up to 23 hours of daily outages. The company also cited competition from streaming services and changes in viewer preferences as pressures on its traditional pay-TV model. To adapt, MultiChoice invested an additional ZAR1.6 billion in its streaming service Showmax, which reported 50% year-over-year growth. Mawela added, “Showmax strategically positions the business to actively participate in the streaming revolution as it gains momentum across Africa.”
