WORLD BANK TELLS TINUBU GOVT TO CONTINUE WITH ECONOMIC POLICY DESPITE RISING HARDSHIP

The Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank, Mr Indermit Gill, has urged the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government to press forward with its ongoing economic reforms, despite the significant hardships they are causing for many Nigerians.

Speaking at the opening session of the 30th Nigerian Economic Summit (#NES30) in Abuja on Monday, Gill highlighted the importance of sustaining the reforms to pave the way for long-term economic growth.

He commended the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for its efforts in unifying exchange rates, a step seen as crucial for stabilizing the economy.

However, Gill acknowledged the tough conditions many Nigerians, especially the poor and vulnerable, are facing due to these changes.

He emphasised the need for the government to provide cost-effective safety nets to protect the most affected.

“The reforms are necessary to unlock the potential of Nigeria’s economy and that of Sub-Saharan Africa. Though they are painful now, they are the key to future prosperity,” Gill stated.

According to Gill, “I’m not sure whether you agree with me or not, but if this is done, it will transform the economy of Sub-Saharan Africa.

“These things are incredibly challenging, but the rewards are enormous. This has been the lesson from the past 40 years, as seen in countries like Norway, Poland, and Korea.

“I might say something unpopular, but Nigeria’s reforms from 2003 to 2007 were exactly what was needed; however, they weren’t sustained. The current fiscal and monetary reforms are hurting everyone, especially ordinary Nigerians, who are facing high food and transport costs.”

It said, “The government must do everything in its power to protect the most vulnerable citizens from hardships because their lives, along with the lives of 110 million children, depend on it.

“You must stay committed to these reforms because the future of Nigeria, and these 110 million children, is at stake. In the coming years, Nigeria’s policymakers have three crucial options. First, they should prioritize non-oil exports.

“Nigeria’s current exchange rate is the most effective it has been in 20 years. It’s a significant opportunity. The country must build its foreign reserves as a buffer against oil price fluctuations. I believe Governor Cardoso is already taking these steps and should be encouraged.

“Second, every vulnerable household requires government support to weather these tough times. Cost-effective safety nets should be implemented to protect the most vulnerable, funded by the savings from fuel subsidies and exchange rate adjustments.

“Nigeria has an immense need for jobs. In the next decade, over 12 million Nigerians will join the workforce. Jobs must be created, particularly by attracting investments in the non-oil sector,” he added.

As the situation unfolds, many are eagerly awaiting an official statement from the authorities to clarify Lagbaja’s status.Checks on the Nigerian Army social media pages show that the last public appearance of Lagbaja was on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, when he inaugurated several civil-military cooperation projects in Okuku, Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State.Top military officers have been representing him at key events, including the Army War College Nigeria Course 8/2024 graduation dinner and award night in Abuja on October 2, 2024, where Lagbaja was supposed to be the chief host.Additionally, Lagbaja missed the combined passing-out parade of the 71 Regular Course, Army, Navy, and Air Force on September 28.This significant event saw the graduation of Direct Short Service Course 28 (Army) and Direct Short Service Course 32 (Air Force) cadets from the prestigious Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).Lagbaja’s absence from these events has raised eyebrows, especially given his position as the head of the Nigerian Army.Sources told SaharaReporters that Lagbaja has also not been seen at the Nigerian Army Headquarters located at the Armed Forces Complex, Muhammadu Buhari Way, Abuja in the last three weeks.“We haven’t seen his official vehicle at his designated car park for three weeks now, unlike before,” a soldier attached to the Army headquarters told SaharaReporters.However, a top officer close to Lagbaja told SaharaReporters that he was flown abroad by his family members on a secret trip to attend to his medical needs.The officer said, “The Chief of Army Staff is nowhere to be found for many days now. He hasn’t been seen at the Army headquarters or any military function in the last three weeks. I can confirm to you that he is seriously sick and was taken to the hospital. However, his family members arranged for him to be moved out of the country for medical treatment.”“The COAS is a leader and most of the Major Generals are doing anyhow because they have no one to report to currently. Anybody can fall sick but someone needs to be in charge. I wish him a very quick recovery, I have known him since our days in Makurdi, Benue State. We were both young officers then and he was a captain,” another officer said.Also speaking to SaharaReporters, a Major said, “I don’t know whether he is sick or not, I can’t confirm that to you, but I got to know two weeks ago that he wasn’t in the country and I know he’s not back as I talk to you.“As military men, we were taught to be observant, so I noticed he was not at the October 1 Independence Day parade ground in Abuja. I asked my superiors including a general and I was told that he was out of the country.     WHY WE INVADED RADIO STATION TO ARREST SUSPECT – EFCC The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has explained that a radio presenter with Urban Radio, Favour Ekoh, was arrested over her involvement in a ponzi scheme where she lured unsuspecting victims into parting away with over N700 million with the promise of offering them 10% of their investment on a monthly basis, saying the ponzi scheme had since closed with no track of other members of the criminal syndicate. In a press statement on Tuesday, the EFCC denied allegations of wrongdoing in effecting the arrest of the “prime suspect” who was planning to be at large before luck ran out of her, insisting that the operatives provided sufficient identification and warrant of arrest but were obstructed from carrying out their lawful duties by some lawless individuals who ostensibly shut them inside the building. Describing Favour Ekoh as a principal suspect in the fraudulent activity, the statement noted that the company, Life Trading, was used by the suspect and her cohorts now at large to swindle over 50 victims to close to one billion naira. If further denied interrupting Urban Radio’s live programme, nor taking away any of its devices, describing such one-sided narrative as a false attempt to mislead innocent members of the public. Read the statement in full: EFCC PRESS STATEMENT EFCC’s Arrest at Urban Radio Enugu: Facts of the Matter On Monday, October 14, 2024 a team of operatives of the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, comprising four officers were at Urban Radio 94.5FM, Enugu to invite one Favour Ekoh, host of Prime Time, a programme running at the Station. Ekoh is being investigated by the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the EFCC in an alleged N700 million Ponzi scheme fraud involving about fifty (50) victims. According to the victims, Ekoh allegedly lured them into investing in a scheme “Life Trading” in a company, Leverage Index Limited, where they were offered returns on investment of 10 percent of their capitals after a period of time. The victims alleged that after investing their money into the company located at No. 1 Colliery Street, Okpara Avenue, Enugu State, the company closed its office with no return on investment or principal returned to the victims. Ekoh allegedly invited the victims into the business and she remained the only link the victims could hold. At the Radio Station, operatives of the Commission, holding a warrant of arrest for Ekoh, identified themselves as officers of the EFCC. They informed the Managing Director of the Station, Bamikole Owoyomi, about their mission. However, in a rather strange twist, a staff of the Station called the Chairman of the Radio Station who ordered that the gate of the building be locked in and out, thereby holding the officers hostage. Faced with such hostility, they called for a rescue team which eventually arrested Omoyomi, Ekoh and the two security guards that locked them within the premises of the Station. Ekoh had to be trailed to the Station for an arrest because the nature of the fraudulent dealings necessitated a sting operation that would foreclose her escape or going underground. She was neither arrested while on air nor any disruption of the lawful activities of the Radio Station took place. No equipment of the Station was tampered with and she has since been released after being allowed to make a Statement at the Enugu office. Owoyomi and the two security guards were arrested for obstruction of justice as they initially prevented the operatives from carrying out their official duty.
