DRAMA AS FAYOSE DECLARES SELF PDP NATIONAL CHAIRMAN, SUSPENDS WIKE, ATIKU, OTHERS

Isaac Fayose, the brother of former Ekiti governor, Ayo Fayose, has declared himself the new National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Isaac went further to announce the suspension of some top members from the two factions of the party, such as Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Nyesom Wike, Ayo Fayose, Seyi Makinde, and other G5 members.

He added that anyone who feels agitated by his decision should challenge it in the court.

“It’s official, now I’m the new national Chairman of the PDP. The current [Acting] National Chairman, Mr Damagum, has been suspended and I’ve asked the security at Wadata House to keep the key with the Secretariat.

“If you’re not happy, please, we don’t want you to come to the secretariat to make trouble. You can go to court. And the NWC, some of you have been suspended, drop all the PDP stuff with you at the security at Wandata. The former G5 has been suspended. Wike has been suspended.

“Fayose has been suspended. Governor Seyi Makinde has been suspended. All the people doing anti-party have been suspended. Atiku too has been suspended because his ambition is giving us headache,” he declared.

Earlier, a faction of the PDP National Working Committee, NWC, had suspended Damagum and the party’s National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu.

The factional NWC also suspended the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba and the National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade.

However, the Abuja Federal High Court restrained the National Executive Committee (NEC) and PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT) from removing Damagum as the party’s Acting National Chairman.

The court ordered that no other person must be recognized as PDP national chairman other than Damagum until the national convention of the party scheduled for December next year.

A source at the meeting disclosed that Tinubu wasn’t pleased with the impeachment move hence his insistence that it be upturned. Some members of the GAC also accused its leadership of not carrying them along before Obasa’s removal, hence they supported the President’s directive for his reinstatement. The source further told SaharaReporters that the lawmakers were told to write two apology letters to the President. The source said, “Members of the GAC after many disagreements among themselves directed the lawmakers to write two apology letters to the President. It is obvious that the lawmakers didn’t want Obasa reinstated but it seems the President really wants him back. Also, GAC members are divided on the matter. “I want to believe that apart from the reasons the President gave, I think he took that decision to avoid the state plunging into a crisis. Also, the President directed that the former Speaker be reinstated to check the excessiveness of the lawmakers. You know they removed the lawmakers without carrying some leaders of the party along. “So, they were told to write two apology letters to the President which they instantly wrote. The first letter was to apologise for making the wrong move of impeaching the Speaker without informing the leaders of the party. In the letter, they promised to commute the removal of Obasa to resignation. “The second letter was written by lawmakers from Lagos West to the President. In the letter, they accepted Hon. Mojisola Meranda as the Speaker of the House and told the President they would be disregarding the zoning formula. They expressed their willingness to allow her complete her term. Out of the 20 lawmakers from Lagos West, 17 signed the letter.” Obasa was on January 13, 2025, removed by a majority of lawmakers over alleged misconduct, abuse of office, and financial misappropriations. He was replaced by former deputy speaker, Mojisola Meranda. Sources earlier told SaharaReporters that the action had led to a crisis within the party’s leadership. The disagreement among the APC leaders earlier became evident when two GAC members, Senator Anthony Adefuye and Chief Muraina Taiwo, openly opposed Obasa’s removal, describing it as illegal and a sign of disregard for party leadership. However, their stance was swiftly dismissed by another GAC member, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, who described their comments as childish and inconsequential, urging party leaders to refrain from making hasty public statements on the issue. The Peoples Gazette on Sunday reported that President Bola Tinubu had instructed members of the Assembly to prepare for the reinstatement of Obasa. “The president has sent instruction that we should start preparing to let him come back,” a senior Lagos politician had told the online newspaper. “The president said Obasa will spend only a short time before resigning on his terms.“We have agreed to let him come back to give him a soft landing that he told us he deserved because of the serious political consequences of allowing this matter to endure,” the politician said, adding that they would have done things differently if they were wielding the power to make such an ultimate decision.     I WON’T DENY MY IGBO IDENTITY – MBATA, OHANAEZE PRESIDENT GENERAL The President-General of the Igbo socio-political organisation, ‘Ohanaeze Ndigbo’, Senator John Mbata, has said nothing will ever deny his Igbo identity, describing recent criticisms against him as a lack of understanding. This is why he emphasised his commitment to supporting the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, as well as respecting the office of the governor. Mbata stated this when the Opobo Elder Statesmen-4-Sim paid him a courtesy visit in Port Harcourt on Monday. He dismissed recent criticisms against him, saying they were noises from those lacking understanding. He stated, “I see my responsibility as building bridges. We must connect our people to a much larger platform for development,” even as he reaffirmed his Igbo identity and the importance of unity among ethnic groups. The Ohanaeze President-General said, “Some people say they are from Benin, that their ancestry is Benin. And I say, That’s fine. Let’s go there. We say that we have a relationship with the Igbo. I’m not going to deny my Igbo identity. “Anyhow you like, talk from now till tomorrow; I’m not going to deny my ancestry. “We are related. Why are you shouting me down? I bet you these things will just naturally die down. I didn’t answer anybody because I see my responsibility as building bridges. People will, by and large, understand what we are doing. “We must operate at the highest stage of this Nigerian project. A word, they say, is enough for the wise.” Earlier, the Chairman of Opobo Elder Statesmen-4-Sim, Edwin Cockeye-Brown, congratulated the new President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo on his electoral victory and expressed gratitude to him for his “unwavering support” for the Rivers State Governor before, during and after his election. Cockeye-Brown stated, “I recall particularly that during the impeachment attempt, you stood by the governor like a shining star. You supported him; you did not shake and you did not shy away.” He highlighted the long-standing relationship between the Mbata family and the Opobo people, tracing it back to his father, the late Elder Samuel Mbata, a revered gentleman and evangelist. Cockeye-Brown further said the gathering, which included some Alapu, respected elders, leaders, Senibos, Amaopusenibos, and youth representatives from the Opobo kingdom, underscored the collective commitment to unity within the state. “Your father was a prayerful man and a philanthropist. I believe it is his prayers that have enabled you to reach these heights,” he added. Cockeye-Brown praised Mbata’s steadfastness during political challenges, affirming that his election as President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo was divinely ordained. In his remarks, the Rivers State Chairman of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Livingstone Wechie, lauded the visit as historic, celebrating Senator Mbata’s leadership role for over one hundred million Ndigbo worldwide. Weche said, “This visit today is historic and prophetic. Ikwerre people will receive this with gladness. “Today, we have the tallest Ikwerre son, both in height and stature, to be given this task to lead more than one 100 million Ndigbo all over the world. “This is the stone that the builders rejected, now the chief cornerstone,” Wechie remarked, pledging continued support for Governor Fubara.
