LABOUR PARTY OPTS OUT OF ENUGU LG ELECTION

After a stakeholders meeting held on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, the Labour Party,, Enugu East Local Government, has announced their withdrawal from the state local government election slated for this Saturday.

In a communique signed by some leaders of the party in the local goverment, including the Chairman, Chief Sunday Nome, the House of Representatives Member, Prof. Sunday Nnamchi, among others, Enugu East Local Government Labour Party wrote, “we wish to inform all the members of Labour Party in Enugu East Local Government and the general public that our party shall not be participating in the Saturday Local Government election in Enugu State.

“We have carefully observed events leading to this upcoming local government election and we note with dismay that the electoral umpire; ENSIEC, and the ruling party, are not ready to ensure that the election goes free and fair.
“As we all know, local government, being the third tier of the government, is the closest to the people and as such, our objective should be couched on electing credible individuals into the various positions in the local government but unfortunately, the electoral umpire has already designed the election to favour the ruling party in the state.

“The above claim is built on the following reasons

i) Glaring disregard for the Labour Party, Enugu East Local Government, Congress that gave birth to our candidates. It’s worthy to note that the Labour Party held ward congresses to elect our councillorship candidates across the 12 wards in the local government and also held local government congress to elect our chairmanship candidate; Ibezim Denis Ekete.

“The Enugu East Local Government, Labour Party Chairman, Chief Sunday O. Nome (JP) in a letter dated 6th August 2024, wrote to ENSIEC, forwarding the names of the party’s successful candidates for the elections.
“Sadly, the electoral umpire chose to publish another names which were not approved by the party

ii) The Court’s inability to entertain our case:
“In our bid to seek redress in court, we filed a suit at the state High Court with suit no: E/637M/2024.
“Ordinarily, the state High Court ought to have assigned our case to a vacation court but unfortunately, they assigned our case to a regular court, which is presently on vacation and not allowed to entertain electoral matter at this time.
This implies that our case will not be entertained until after the election. Thereby, preventing us from getting the Justice we seek.

“In the light of the above, we urge all our party faithfuls to shun the election and continue to support the party as the party is committed to building an enduring society and we also wish to impore all our party faithfuls to remain steadfast, even as the ruling party is trying to infiltrate the party with those who are not aligned to the labour party’s visions.

“We assure them our resolve to pick out all the bad eggs that have infiltrated the party through the back door.
‘Also, we note the last expanded Stakeholders meeting of the Labour Party held at Abia State, where we appointed a caretaker committee to steer the affairs of the party vis-a-vis conduct the Ward and state congresses and National Convention of the party, which will birth new leadership capable of leading the party to its greatest height.

“Finally we also implore our candidates to remain peaceful and look forward to the greater future ahead.”

GROUPS VOICE OUT ANGER OVER ALLEGED PLANS TO IMPEACH FUBARA More groups are voicing out their anger over the alleged plans to use the Rivers State House of Assembly to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The latest group, the Ijaw National Congress (INC), yesterday, asked the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to allow Governor Fubara to concentrate on leading Rivers State to prosperity while at the same time advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to call the former governor to order.Speaking on Wednesday with News Night on Arise Television, the President of INC, Professor Benjamin Okaba, said something urgent must be done by the federal government to avert disaster. He spoke in the wake of a stalemate after Governor Fubara was denied access to the Rivers State House of Assembly complex to present the 2025 budget to the lawmakers who are loyal to Wike. Professor Okaba said: “President Tinubu has the choice of choosing between Wike and Ijaw Nation. Let him be encouraging him (Wike) to mess up himself in public. “Let him encourage him to be insulting people. But should the otherwise happen, they should not hold the leadership of Ijaw nation responsible. So far he wants as many structures as possible to fall and die with him, we shall help him. “He is frustrated and becoming so desperate because the political economy of Rivers State is slipping off; he will not win. Wike will not win; government is not about individuals. One person cannot be more powerful than an institution. That is the statement we are making. “We have not seen any error or crime committed by the governor. And as a true son of Ijaw nation, the INC shall apply every legitimate effort to support and defend our own,” he said. There are fears in many quarters that the crisis in Rivers State has the potential to obstruct the peace in the oil rich state, the Niger Delta and by extension, Nigeria as a whole. Also on Wednesday, an elder statesman and member of the Rivers State Elders and Leaders Forum, Anabs Sara-Igbehas, condemned the action of lawmakers of the Rivers Assembly for denying Fubara access to present the state budget to them. Sara-Igbe, who is the pioneer spokesman for the Pan Niger Delta Forum, described the action of the lawmakers as provocative and an insult to Rivers people. Speaking in Port Harcourt, Sara-Igbe, who is the National Chairman of South South Elders Forum, said denying the governor access to the Assembly complex was not an insult to Fubara as a person, but to the people of Rivers State. He said, “The governor was elected by millions of Rivers people. As the chief executive officer of the state, he has unhindered access to all the facilities within the state. Blocking him from entering the complex is a direct insult and embarrassment to the people of Rivers state. “It is now very clear that the governor is ready for peace. But these people are not ready for peace. Sara-Igbe further said that Fubara has always wanted peace; hence on the advice of President Bola Tinubu, he withdrew the case he had against the lawmakers last year even when they refused to withdraw theirs. On the comment by Wike, who during a media chat on Wednesday morning said Fubara can be impeached and “heaven will not fall”, the elder statesman reminded that pouring insults on the Ijaw people will not help the former governor and the current political situation in the state. “He should remember that during the time of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, the production rate of crude dropped drastically from 2.4million barrels per day to a paltry 700,000bpd until the elders of the Ijaw nation and the Niger…

WIKE CALLED BAUCHI GOVERNOR, BALA MOHAMMED, A BETRAYER FOR RENEGING ON PLANS AGAINST ATIKU ABUBAKAR

WIKE CALLED BAUCHI GOVERNOR, BALA MOHAMMED, A BETRAYER FOR RENEGING ON PLANS AGAINST ATIKU ABUBAKAR Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has opened up about the internal crises within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) prior 2023 general election and currently, accusing Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, of betrayal. He also claimed that some governors elected on the platform of the PDP were working against the party. During a live media chat on Tuesday, March 12, 2025, Wike recounted past events that shaped his political stance, recalling his time as Rivers State governor when he resisted efforts to undermine the PDP. “When I was governor, I saw the ruling party coming out, using Ali Modu Sheriff to fight to kill the PDP. I stood my ground, saying the PDP must survive. I did not go to the Villa — never,” Wike declared. Wike declined to delve into the matter when asked if he agreed with former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai’s claim that the ruling party was sponsoring divisions within opposition parties. “I don’t want to go into that; it’s El-Rufai’s view. Do I look like someone that does something out of the public?” Addressing concerns about the PDP’s preparedness ahead of the next general election, Wike expressed scepticism, blaming some governors for the party’s woes. “See why it would not hold; every governor is working against the party. Let them challenge me, and I will tell them one by one.” Wike particularly accused Governor Bala Mohammed of betraying the G5 governors during a critical moment of political manoeuvring for the 2023 elections. “Bala Mohammed was having a problem with Atiku and Co. That day, I was going to commission a lounge at the airport; when he landed, I said there was no need to come to town when I was coming to the airport. He called me. Ibrahim Adoke, the former Attorney-General was there. “He said Atiku would kill him if Atiku wins and that we must support Asiwaju. We now organised G5 to go and pay Bala a visit in Bauchi, not knowing that he was using us to settle with Atiku. When we got there, he was happy. The next day, Tambuwal led a team to go and see Bala, and Bala abandoned us. “That’s why I say before you hold some position, you must be a man of character. That’s why I always talk about character.” Reiterating his stance on integrity, Wike added, “I don’t need to go to any Mallam (Herbalist) to pray for me to have character.” Amid speculation about his loyalty to the PDP, Wike clarified that he had no intention of leaving the party. “If I move to the APC, I’ll tell you when I’m leaving. I don’t run away from fights; I’m not leaving this party o. The governors have money, but they are not spending it on the party.” He also criticised the Enugu State governor for failing to assert leadership in the South-East. Wike said: “Look at the Enugu governor who wanted to be the leader of the South-East; in Anambra today, not a single person bought a ticket for the governorship. You cannot bring someone from Anambra to contest, and you say you are a zonal leader. “I don’t care who likes me. Do you like my work? If yes, that’s fine. Forget about me. The only person that should like me is my wife, and she does. “I don’t care about who likes me and who does not. Fubara was once my supporter, has he not changed?”
