ENUGU COMMUNITY CRIES OVER ALLEGED INCESSANT POLICE HARASSMENT OF INDIGENES, CALLS FOR STATE GOVT INTERBENTION

Agunese-Mmaku Community in Awgu local government area of Enugu State has cried out over alleged incessant harassment of some people of the area by officials of the Enugu State Command of Nigerian Police Force.

At the end of an emergency general meeting of the Town Union held on Sunday, September 1, the community expressed concern over alleged ncessant harassment, arrest and incarceration of some of their sons on trumped-up allegations.

In a statement jointly signed by the President General of the Town Union, and Secretary General, Arc, Simon Okike and Okolo Nobert Anba-Nebo respectively, the community alleged that three of their sons, Messrs Theophilus Chukwu, David Okey and Vincent Okafor had been languishing in various detention centres in Enugu State.

According to them, “presently, other sons of our community are hounded by the police, they further alleged, stressing that the “circumstances leading to their arrests and detention were predicated on an extant matter, which the community had discussed and rested and directed all parties to sheath their swords and give peace a chance for the development of the community”.

They claimed that the Town Union had made several attempts to resolve any remaining issues and restore peace in the community prominent among which were the peace meetings of 7th of January 2023 and 7th January 2024, in addition to numerous consultations with all stakeholders.

The statement further read: “While we make bold to say that there are no personal issues between the affected persons, we also wish to state categorically that the issues in question had to do with disagreements over modalities for electing Town Union executives in 2021.

“The crime committed by those presently being hounded into detention is that they, as many others, insisted that the Town Union should be independent, even while it works in concert with the traditional stool, for the overall development of our community.

“We are therefore shocked that even when the entire community had discussed and resolved this matter, certain vested interests that feel the Town Union must be an extension of their realm are busy investing resources and time to ensure that all those that canvassed for an independent Town Union are put out of circulation with neither cause their actions nor reason their guide.

“We therefore make the following declarations concerning the unhealthy developments presently happening in our community:

“1. Condemn in the strongest terms the arrest and detention of or people by the Enugu State Police Command particularly Messrs Theophilus Chukwu. David Okeke and Barr Vincent Okafor on trumped-up charges without investigation or prosecution.

“2. The police insinuation that the arrested men were involved in war-like activities in our community and using guns and cutlasses to pursue our traditional ruler, Igwe Cyprian Nevobasi is untrue, unfounded, baseless and an attempt to give a dog a bad name just to hang it.

“3. That the persons mentioned as allegedly perpetrating these acts capable of breaching public peace in our community are responsible and highly-placed members of our community and never visited the village within the period in question.

“4. That the said allegation never happened on that said date or on any other date in Agunese. We are persuaded that this is the handiwork of mischief makers who are bent on heating up our community and planting the seeds of discord among our people.
Actions Sought

Based on the foregoing, the Agunese-Mmaku Development Union General Assembly makes the following appeals:

  1. The Nigerian Police should stop further arrests and detention of our people as this is creating enormous tension in our community and capable of further breaching our peace.
  2. The Nigerian Police should, without delay, release those already in their custody
  3. The Nigerian Police should urgently unmask the faceless petitioners and compel them to prove the veracity of their claims or face the full weight of the law
  4. That the Enugu State Government, through the appropriate Ministry should intervene in this matter and ensure lasting peace in our community.

Reactions from the state police command could not be obtained as at press time as calls placed on the state PPRO did not go.

    LAGOS ORDERS EVACUATION OF POLICE BARRACKS OVER IMMINENT COLLAPSE Lagos State Government has raised the alarm over an imminent building collapse at Mopol 20 Barracks, Onigbongbo in the Ikeja area of the state. This is as the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency is set to begin an emergency evacuation at the old block 3 section of the barracks. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said its response team had assessed some parts of the structure and found them to be in a precarious condition. Oke-Osanyintolu stated the building and adjacent structures would also be evacuated immediately to prevent any loss of life or property. “The Agency dispatched a response team to the location and the findings indicate that the building and those adjacent must be evacuated with immediate effect. We are conducting a response plan which comprises an assessment, safe and orderly evacuation and controlled demolition “Under the watchful eye of the Babajide Olusola Sanwoolu administration, we will be carrying out this preemptive demolition action due to the precarious conditions of the building and possible secondary incidents that could occur if left unmanaged,” the statement partly read. He, however, urged members of the public within the vicinity to remain calm and refrain from spreading misinformation on social media. He also assured that the situation was being closely monitored and managed. The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement in July, disclosed that the police were carrying out a comprehensive renovation of some police barracks in the state. He noted that the renovation would be carried out in partnership with the state government.

    MINIMUM WAGE: PRIVATE EMPLOYERS PAYING LESS THAN N70,000 RISK JAIL – PERM SEC The Federal Government has called on agencies recruiting for the private sector to adhere to the N70,000 minimum wage, warning that any deviation would not be tolerated. According to the FG, the new minimum wage is necessary to address the current economic reality, emphasising that no Nigerian worker, whether in government or private employment, should be paid less than the minimum wage. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Kachollom Daju, stated this on Wednesday while speaking at the 13th Annual General Meeting of the Employers Association for Private Employment Agencies of Nigeria, held in Ikeja, Lagos. Daju, who was represented by the Director of Employment and Wages of the ministry, John Nyamali, said, “The minimum wage is now a law, and as a result, it is a punishable crime for any employer to pay less than N70,000 to any of its workers. “The private employment agencies should make it compulsory in any contract they take from their principal that their workers should not earn less than the minimum wage. The least paid worker in Nigeria should earn N70,000, and I think that should be after all deductions. “The minimum wage is a law, and you can be jailed if you fail to implement it. The Federal Government is committed to ensuring that the least paid worker goes home with N70,000.” In his remarks, the President of the Employers Association for Private Employment Agencies of Nigeria, Dr. Olufemi Ogunlowo, asked the government and Nigeria Labour Congress to clarify whether the N70,000 minimum wage is net or gross, stating that all ambiguities in the Act should be highlighted and explained. According to Okoye, the EAPEAN is already committed to the minimum wage, as well as providing decent jobs for Nigerians and guarding against the exploitation of human resources. “As a labour union in the private sector, we are committed to the implementation of the minimum wage. We are a law-abiding and guided association. Our principals and clients have also keyed into the minimum wage. “However, the government must clarify whether the N70,000 minimum wage is net or gross. The government and NLC should address all ambiguities in the minimum wage,” he stated. Speaking at the programme, the Chairperson of the NLC, Lagos State chapter, Funmilayo Sessi, said the prevailing hardship had made a mess of whatever income any worker was earning in Nigeria, calling on private employers to ensure the payment of the N70,000 minimum wage. She said: “The N70,000 isn’t enough in the current economic realities. By the time the consequential adjustment is concluded, all private employment agencies should immediately start paying their workers the N70,000 minimum wage. “The NLC in Lagos State will see to the strict enforcement of the minimum wage. EAPEAN should avoid confrontation with the NLC on the minimum wage.”
