.NLC PRESIDENT, JOE AJAERO, NOT ABOVE LAW, CAN BE INVESTIGATED – PRESIDENCY

The President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government has denied allegations of human rights abuses levelled against it by the United Kingdom Trade Union Congress (TUC) following the arrest of Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
The Nigerian government in a statement by presidential aide, Bayo Onanuga, said no individual, including the NLC president, is above the law in Nigeria.
Ajaero was arrested and detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, while en route to London for a TUC conference.
Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, clarified that Ajaero’s arrest stemmed from his refusal to honour an invitation from a law enforcement agency.
He said, “The Trade Union Congress in the United Kingdom opened its conference today in London, with its leader making false claims about human rights abuses and violations in Nigeria. The Nigerian government was wrongly and falsely accused of rights abuse because the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, was stopped from travelling abroad after he snubbed the invitation of a law enforcement agency conducting an ongoing investigation. Ajaero, who probably considers himself above the law, was slated to speak at the same conference where the UK TUC leader attacked Nigeria.
“His actions, however, have serious consequences, as no one is above the law in Nigeria. Clearly, under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (As Amended), no person is above the summons of law enforcement agencies and lawful investigation. Like the United Kingdom and other civilised nations, Nigeria is a country of law governed by the Constitution.
“We are not aware that there is anyone in the United Kingdom or anywhere in Europe and the United States, trade union leaders inclusive, who will flagrantly ignore the invitation or summons of MI5 or Scotland Yard or treat the FBI with the level of disdain Mr Ajaero has subjected law enforcement agencies in Nigeria.
“In the United States, for example, former President Donald Trump has been the subject of numerous investigations and prosecutions in courts in several states since he left office. Mr. Hunter Biden, son of the President of the United States, has been the subject of a lawful investigation by the FBI.
“We, therefore, reject any notion and allusion to human rights violations in Nigeria. The accusations made by the Trade Union Congress in the United Kingdom are, thus, unfounded and based on a misunderstanding of the situation. Besides, the Nigerian Government is being led by a pro-democracy activist president who will do everything to protect civil liberties and the rights of all citizens. There is no adversarial relationship between the Labour Movement in Nigeria and the government.
“While labour unions and the government may not always agree on policy direction, the government has consistently shown readiness to engage on any issue with labour despite the latter’s political partisanship. Contrary to the erroneous impression being created, the invitation extended by the Department of State Services to Mr. Ajaero has nothing to do with his role as the President of NLC.
“As a responsible citizen of Nigeria, Mr Ajaero should honour any invitation from our security agencies and resolve any issues that may arise during the investigation instead of stirring adverse public opinion against the security agencies. It is worth reminding Nigerians and the global community that the federal government recognises that the labour movement exists to protect and defend the interests of its members.
“What is also worth noting is that Labour, in most cases, only advances ideological positions that fly in the face of economic realities. Many ideological stances of the labour unions in Nigeria in the past have only stunted the economic growth and development of the country and even compromised the material well-being of the workers and the poor people they protect.”
SaharaReporters had exclusively reported that Ajaero’s international passport and mobile phones, which had been seized by the DSS, were returned to him.

TODAY IS NIGERIAN ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY

:TODAY IS NIGERIAN ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY 2025 In Nigeria, Armed Forces Day, also known as Remembrance Day, is celebrated on January 15th. It was formerly marked on the 11th of November every year to coincide with the Remembrance Day (Poppy Day) for the World War II veterans in the British Commonwealth of Nations, but it was changed to January 15th in Nigeria in commemoration of the surrender of Biafran troops to the Federal troops on 15th of January 1970 thus signalling the end of the Nigerian Civil War. The day is marked with a Remembrance Day parade at the Cenotaph in Abuja and in the 36 state capitals. The ceremony includes a 21 gun salute, playing of the Last Post, a minute’s silence, laying of wreaths and release of pigeons to symbolise peace. In the past month Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblems have been on sale across the country. Proceeds of the sale of the remembrance emblem go to the Nigerian Legion. The Nigerian Legion is the Nigerian association of ex-servicemen, i.e. former members of the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force. Officers and men of the armed forces are trained to fight and kill. When they retire, they discover that there are no jobs for them (some of them have been in the armed forces since they were teenagers and military work is all they know). Others were forced to retire from the Armed Forces due to injuries sustained in battle. The Legion helps them to integrate into society and to take care of themselves. By law the Legion is permitted to operate certain businesses in order to raise money for its members. Members of the legion also serve as security guards at government establishments (you often see them in their brown uniforms). The Legion also raises money through the sale of Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblems. In recent years (especially since the return to civilian rule) members of the Legion have gone through great hardship while trying to collect their pensions and gratuity. Sometimes their pensions are not paid for many months. At other times, legionnaires, who could be as old as 60, 70, or 80 years old are made to travel long distances and queue in the hot sun, all in the name of pension verification exercise. Many legionnaires have died during this process.

SENATE APPROVES SOUTH EAST DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION NOMINEES

SENATE APPROVES SOUTH EAST DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION NOMINEES The Senate has urged nominees of the Governing Board of South East Development Commission (SEDC) not to betray the hope entrusted in them by President Bola Tinubu and Nigerians. The lawmakers gave the charge during the Ad-Hoc Committee screening on regional development Commissions chaired by Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu. The 18-member nominee of SEDC was led by Dr. Emeka Wogu (chairman) and Mark C Okoye (MD/CEO). Others are Ugochukwu H. Agballah, Okey Ezenwa, Chief Hyacinth Ikpor, Chidi Echeazu, Ifeanyi Agwu, Nasiru Usman, Hamma Adama, Ali Kumo, Edward David Onoja, Orure Kufre Inima, Daniel Akwari, Mrs. Joke Adebayo-Chukwuma, Stanley Ohajuruka (ED Finance), Chief Sylvester Okonkwo (ED Corporate Services), Toby Okechukwu (ED Projects ), Anthony Agbo (ED Commercial and Industrial Development) and Dr. Clifford Ogbede (ED Natural Resources, Agriculture and Rural Development). Shortly after the brief introduction by the nominees of the SEDC, Chairman of the committee, Kalu, re-echoed the warnings of his colleagues and told the nominees to prioritise the interest of the people. “You are the face of this organisation and we don’t want anything that will bring the name of our president to disrepute. We will not tolerate anything that is against the interest of the people. The Senate committee will oversee you seriously. “Don’t pay for a job that is not done. If you do, we won’t hesitate to report back to the President to sack you. Use the money for the development of the people. So far no member has objected to your clearance. “Look at the trust these members have given to you, we want you to improve the relationship between you and the National Assembly. We are attending to you because of the budget process. If you don’t do it your Commissions will miss the budget process because the Senate will soon go on recess.”
