SOUTH EAST KILLINGS: WE WANT ASARI DOKUBO ARRESTED, PROSECUTED– HURIWA

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has called for the arrest of former Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo.

HURIWA believes that Asari has done enough to deserve prosecution by the authorities or, at the very least, an open investigation to determine the legality of his actions.

The rights group noted that during Asari’s visit to President Bola Tinubu after he won the 2023 presidential election, he gave a sensational interview admitting to running a private army.

During the interview, Dokubo claimed that he undertook assignments for the Federal Government to combat terrorists in the North and carried out operations in the South-East.

Hence, in a statement signed by its national coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA questioned how a private individual could be allowed to operate a private army, which is unconstitutional in Nigeria.

The rights association urged the government to investigate the allegations “that some of the killings in the South-East during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari were carried out by Dokubo’s so-called private army”.

HURIWA said it was “particularly concerned about the video footage showing Dokubo brandishing sophisticated military-grade weapons, which no private individual in Nigeria is legally permitted to possess”.

“Despite these serious allegations, there has been no action taken by the Army, the Department of State Services (DSS), or any other security outfit,” it added.

HURIWA said it was alarmed that the Army and the Police “continue to parade individuals purportedly arrested as IPOB members, yet there has been no transparent disclosure regarding how many of these individuals have been successfully prosecuted”.

The rights group demanded answers “on how many of those arrested have been tried, convicted, or are still in detention. Moreover, HURIWA questioned whether there is any substantial proof linking the mainstream IPOB loyal to Nnamdi Kanu, who has been detained for an extended period, to the killings”.

HURIWA reiterated its belief that Nnamdi Kanu’s detention is illegal, arguing that the government has failed to provide any evidence linking him to the violence in the South-East.

The group drew a parallel between Kanu’s case and that of a Miyetti Allah leader who was arrested and later released by the government, despite facing charges in court.

“The Federal Government’s sudden withdrawal of charges and release of the Miyetti Allah leader raises questions about the selective application of justice,” it added.

The association called for an independent and transparent investigation into the killings in the South-East to ascertain the true identities of the perpetrators.

HURIWA also demanded the immediate release of leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.

LP CRISIS: INEC RECOGNISES ABURE FACTION AFTER COURT JUDGEMENT The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has finally obeyed the court order compelling it to recognize the Julius Abure leadership of the Labour Party. In a letter addressed to Abure and Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the Secretary of the Commission, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, invited the Labour Party to the fourth consultative meeting with the political parties. A Federal High Court in Abuja had earlier declared that the 2024 Labour Party national convention held in Nnewi in March was valid, constitutional and in line with all laid down laws in Nigeria. In a judgement made by Justice Emeka Nwite, the court went further to compel INEC to grant due recognition and all privileges to the Labour Party’s National Working Committee as led by Barrister Julius Abure. Speaking to journalists after the meeting with INEC on Thursday, the National Secretary of the LP, Umar Farouk Ibrahim said that though the party was unjustly excluded from previous engagements, he was satisfied that INEC has obeyed the court order and that the party has now resumed seat amongst the other 18 political parties. He also said that with this development, the party is set for the rest of the political activities including the Anambra governorship election as announced by the INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu. He said, “With the issue of leadership now completely resolved, I urge every member of the party to rally round the Abure leadership. What transpired is only a family affair and we will as a family work towards restoring confidence to the party and every aggrieved or misled member of the party. “The Labour Party will come back stronger but we need everyone to join in the process of rebuilding the paper. It is a no victor nor vanquish situation. We are all winners. The party is however supreme and every member must work towards achieving set targets of the party.”

PDP IN CRISIS BECAUSE SUPREME COURT ALLOWED WARD CHAIRMAN TO SUSPEND NATIONAL CHAIRMAN – JONATHAN

PDP IN CRISIS BECAUSE SUPREME COURT ALLOWED WARD CHAIRMAN TO SUSPEND NATIONAL CHAIRMAN – JONATHAN Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, has cautioned the judiciary against making pronouncements that can be detrimental to the nation’s democracy.Jonathan, who spoke on Thursday in Abuja at the 67th birthday celebration of Prof. Mike Ozekhome (SAN), said he is disturbed by the judgements emanating from various courts on political matters in the country recently. The former Nigerian leader specifically lamented the decision of the Supreme Court that a ward chairman of a political party could suspend the National Chairman of the party. According to him, the apex court ruling is responsible for the current crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and had also caused problems for the All Progressives Congress (APC) previously. Jonathan argued that such court pronouncements could be likened to turning a cone upside down, which increases its propensity to fall. “When a cone is turned upside down, it cannot stand because any little thing that touches it will fall,” Jonathan submitted, noting that such judgements were capable of destabilising the democratic dispensation in the country. According to him, empowering Ward Chairmen of political parties to suspend their National Chairmen is against the natural course of justice as it is empowering a subordinate to remove his/her superior from office. “You cannot tell me that the head of a department can expel the vice chancellor. “Since that judgement was given, it has created all forms of instability. The PDP is in crisis today because of that judgement. The APC also faced the same problem at a time. “Look at how other nations work; I have never seen where the sub-unit disciplines the principal. “I am therefore pleading with the Supreme Court to review that judgement because it had turned the cone upside down,” ex-President Jonathan added. He made the observations shortly after he was brought to the podium by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was originally named the Chairman of the occasion, but however, while proceeding to the podium to make his remarks, took Jonathan along with him, and announced him as the co-chairman of the event.
