22 PERSONS KILLED DURING #ENDBADGOVERNANCE PROTESTS

During the National Council of State meeting held on Tuesday at the Ado Rock Presidential Villa, it was revealed that a total of twenty-two persons lost their lives in different parts of the country during the nationwide #Endbadgovernance protest.

The ten-day protest which started on August 1, was aimed at drumming on the air of government about hunger currently ravaging the people, which was due to the abrupt removal of fuel subsidy and floating of the Naira

At the meeting, the first since the current administration came to power, seven ministers and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, briefed the council on various national issues.

According to the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, who spoke to journalists after the meeting, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu provided a comprehensive briefing on the recent protests that took place across the country.

Alake described the protests as a “movement to effect a change of regime by force,” which was resisted by authorities.

He said, “I call it a movement to effect a change of regime by force which was also resisted.

“The council thanked Nigerians at large for resisting an unconstitutional move to change government. If anybody is not satisfied with the government, the current administration, there is always an election coming, so you wait for the election and cast your vote.”

“Any change of government has to be through the ballot and not through the barrel of the gun, or through insurrection or through any other unconstitutional means, only through the ballot box can any government be changed and reassured on the security readiness of all security agencies in the country to secure our territorial integrity and to protect Nigerians democracy,” Alake added.

The protests, which turned violent in some states, resulted in 22 deaths.

Ribadu’s briefing covered the pre-, during, and post-event of the protests, providing the council with a thorough understanding of the situation.

In addition to the protests, Finance Minister Wale Edun briefed the council on the economy, updating members on the progress made in implementing macroeconomic policies under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership.

“And these policies are anchored in his eight priority areas and the results to date have been very encouraging,” Edun said.

The National Council of State passed a unanimous vote of confidence in President Bola Tinubu, commending his achievements since assuming office a year ago.

The council also condemned the demands by some protesters for President Tinubu’s resignation during the recent #EndBadGovernance protests.

Former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari attended the meeting in person, while former Heads of State,
Generals Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar, joined virtually.

State governors, deputy governors, ministers, former Chief Justices of the Federation, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and the National Security Adviser were also in attendance.

Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq of Kwara State who also addressed State House Correspondents following the meeting said that during a subsequent executive meeting between the Governors and President Tinubu, the governors unanimously passed a vote of confidence in the President.

In a post shared on his Facebook page this morning, October 18, Igbokwe wondered how this has happened when Nigeria is the ‘’most endowed country in Africa with the most educated people with excellent weather and fertile land among other advantaged factors.” He opined that almost everyone in Nigeria is just working for themselves with no one working for the good of the country.

HOW FG PACIFIED LABOUR WITH PROMISES TO COMPLETE FIVE REFINERIES, PAY ARREARS

HOW FG PACIFIED LABOUR WITH PROMISES TO COMPLETE FIVE REFINERIES, PAY ARREARS One of the promises the Federal Government made to pacify Organised Labour at yesterday’s parley was that five refineries would soon be fully functional. Also, government vowed to pay arrears of wages. These, among others, formed the core of the meeting where “they agreed that it is better to ‘jaw-jaw than war-war’.” “Meaning,” a source told Vanguard, “there will be continuous dialogue between government and labour.” Recall that Vanguard broke the story, yesterday, that leaders of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and their Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, counterpart were meeting with the Federal Government. However, obviously acting on agreed terms, neither the government representatives nor the labour leaders spoke with newsmen on what was discussed and agreed on at the meeting. FG’s promises A source, however, revealed to Vanguard the many promises Federal Government made to the Labour leaders. According to a reliable source: “As part of efforts at crashing transport fares across the country, the Federal Government will hold a meeting with state governors to fully embrace the CNG buses. “This will also affect the cost of foodstuffs as it will reduce the costs of transporting food items from different locations to consumers drastically.“These are parts of efforts to cushion the effects of the subsidy removal on the citizens. “The government also promised to summon a meeting of the economic council to impress it upon state governors to ensure the new minimum wage takes off across the country this month. “It also promised to incorporate labour into the economic council, so labour will participate and monitor economic policies of government, instead of government throwing policies at labour and Nigerians that may result in agitation or protest.” “The government also promised to hasten and complete the refineries. “They said almost five refineries are about to be completed,’’ another source told Vanguard last night. The sources confirmed that “government promised to pay all outstanding arrears and wage awards to workers, and inaugurate all the boards labour has representatives.” Labour pacified One of the sources said: “All these are promises, but the good thing is that it was agreed that the meeting will be a continuous process.” Asked if labour was satisfied with the meeting, the source said: “It is not about satisfaction, but a way forward from the past where government was not discussing with organised labour. ‘’If this trend or practice continues, there is every possibility that disagreements between government and labour will reduce.” Roll call The government’s representatives at the meeting were Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser, NSA; Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Labour Minister; and Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy. Others include Alhaji Mohammed Idris, Information Minister; Heineken Lokpobiri, Petroleum Resources Minister, State; Ekperikpe Ekpo, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), and representatives of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited, NNPCL. For Organised Labour were the President of NLC, Mr Joe Ajaero; Deputy President, Kabiru Ado Sani; the General Secretary, Mr Emma Ugboaja; Deputy President of the TUC, Dr. Tommy Etim Okon; the Secretary General, Nuhu Toro; and the President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, who is also a deputy president of NLC.
